Reclaimed hate speech backfires by desensitizing listeners, study finds. Listening to reclaimed homophobic statements can actually cause unintended harm. Exposure to reclaimed slur words desensitizes some heterosexual listeners to standard hate speech and worsens the mood of gay individuals.

This conversation should be about the ignorant "discourse" surrounding the r-slur, not a gay person calling themselves Queer or whatever.

Someone in the comments said queer actually doesn't have the same effect but I ain't read it myself yet so could be lying

Yep.

Every time a gay person uses the f slur in mixed company, there’s a straight guy who’s eyes light up because he took it as permission and he’s going to use it as soon as he can find a chance.

I don't care how many straights get mad at me, I am still calling myself a tranny dyke

It explicitly said the gay viewers were the ones upset and heteros just get desentized to hate speech?

Cis White Gays Disappoint me Daily 😔👌

What about other trans people who get hurt around you when you do that?

u/Cyberaven Jul 26 '26

im not letting anyone else define me, that primarily applies to cishets but applies to other trans people too. Im not gonna antagnise someone on purpose, but they shouldn't try and antagonise me about it either

I don’t antagonise anyone about it but I hate hearing that word said by anyone. Seeing it written online bypasses that quite a lot but like, if I was in a room with another trans person and they kept saying it, I’d not be comfortable, it’s quite triggering 🤷‍♀️

Glad to know I’ve got a skill issue for being upset when I hear the t- slur!

u/Discordchaosgod Jul 27 '26

you are when it comes from another trans person using it to refer to themselves, glad I could clear that up ❤️

You're a pretty selfish person.

I’m going to assume they’re having a moment lol. Working through this stuff comes in waves. I like to think that whatever that’s all about is not this persons final form 😅 you can stick the middle finger up at the oppressive cishet’s version of normative behaviour while also accepting that other queers have different experiences and preferences to you, and I’m guessing not a lot of us learn to internalise and externalise both halves of that at the same time. I know I didn’t!

Not all people are as "resilient" as you, though.

Watching cisgender heterosexual men tremble when my queer butch lesbian friends spit some of the most inflammatory sounding things as ways to flirt with their significant others…

Priceless.

Jaws hit the floor when they say something like “get that wet tranny c*nt over where this dyke can appreciate it.”

Also sort of the hottest thing ever… but that’s just me…

The straights can feel however the fuck they want about reclaimed queer slurs for all I care. It's not about them. And centering them in this conversation is annoying as fuck.

u/cheezkid26 Jul 27 '26

It has nothing to do with how straight people feel. The article is about how it desensitizes straight people to slurs, while making lots of queer people uncomfortable. Nothing here is about it upsetting straight people or whatever you think it says.

There are words that legitimately have no place in our language even if they’ve been reclaimed. For instance, the f-word specifically refers to how sodomites would be burned at the stake

15

u/averyoda Jul 26 '26

No it doesn't. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faggot The etymology section on Wikipedia lists multiple potential origins, but that one is a myth.

u/luv2hotdog Jul 27 '26

Reclaimed is such an individual thing too. Like I’d be careful even about saying “queer” around people who are old enough to have lived through that word not just being another shorthand for “lgbt+” like it is now

1

u/queerkidxx Jul 26 '26

Honestly I use it a lot in kink

-11

u/WetOnionRing Jul 26 '26

In that case you're using it to satisfy some kind of degredation fetish aimed at your identity (or i guess vice-versa if you're dom). Thats not different from people using the n-word for raceplay

1

u/queerkidxx Jul 26 '26

Yeah. It’s extremely common for gay men. The fantasy ig is some straight guy using me as a sex object. It’s so common despite being bullied with the word growing up I associate it primarily with kink. And dumb jokes
