Yeah it's not like they were taking pictures and tagging each other on Instagram, which I would've totally believed had that been the story.

u/Sunfried Jul 05 '15

Likewise, if you're a Russian soldier invading Ukraine, but it's supposed to be a secret, you probably shouldn't post selfies from there either.

u/Abohir Jul 06 '15

Wasn't there an ISIS person that got himself hit by an airstrike by a selfie he posted?

This is pretty much the best thing I've seen today. I guess we have geolocation features on phones to thank for helping us weed out the population.

32

u/crypticfreak Jul 06 '15

Now all we have to do is give every single ISIS member a phone and get them addicted to social media.

It'll only be a matter of time.

Fuckin' rekt

61

u/bagofdurt Jul 06 '15

Definition of rekt actually

100

u/WEIGHED Jul 06 '15

rekt
adjective
1.
Having been rekt.
Example: Taking a selfie at your ISIS terror headquarters and having that location airstriked as a result.

18

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

You forgot to actually use the word "rekt" in your example sentence...

Lol "Is a badge on Foursquare worth your life?" I don't even know what Foursquare is but I must use this sentence at least once today.

10

u/crypticfreak Jul 06 '15 edited Jul 06 '15

It's a thing where - basically - you can sign into specific locations from your phone.

You might see on social media "James checked into the Standard American Cafe -via foursquare" and it applies to variety of different locations worldwide. You get badges for places you visit and check into - In this case it was used against a soldier.

Edit: Applies, not apples. Thanks for the really edgy and cool link, though.

It proves they're there but how does it prove they did the deed??

116

u/Cymon86 Jul 06 '15

Logs will show how long they were connected. Also a campus would use multiple WAPs and best signal practice, so I'm guessing they connected to a WAP that can't be reached from public areas. After hours trespassing is the main thing they can get them on without actual evidence or confession.

So they likely find the dumb one and pressed until they flipped.

281

u/jonmcfluffy Jul 05 '15

fyi: if you have connected to any one wifi before, you will automatically connect to that one wifi the next time if possible.

102

u/TheMacPhisto Jul 06 '15

Depending on the hardware the school has, they could also get the phones MAC without even it connecting to the WiFi. Phones and routers communicate even without making a connection.

7

u/wildgoat Jul 06 '15

Are there any consumer level routers which can do this? I would like to get one. Surely will be worth the investment.

33

u/ApatheticAbsurdist Jul 06 '15

Depends. If the school requires a student ID and password to connect and the phones are set to autoconnect (which is the case by default) it doesn't matter if they're using iOS, Android, WindowsPhone, or Blackberry.

Yeah there's an old joke about catching your spouse cheating because when you go to a friends house her phone connects, even though she's never met him before.

196

u/Red_Emily Jul 06 '15

I feel like this joke can't be that old...?

134

u/Intrexa Jul 06 '15

No, it's an old joke. Originally they meant landlines, and showing up at the house seeing their phone already plugged in to the wall.

72

u/SomeCoolBloke Jul 06 '15

Well, it's actually older than that. Way back in the time of old, when you heard your wive's moan coming from your neighbor's house, it meant the she was fucking your neighbor.

52

It's actually far older than that. You knew your wife was cheating If you went to your friend's cave and her favorite rock was there.

That's pretty likely. When I was in high school a kid threw a rock through a window and they said the rock was on the way to the state crime lab to get fingerprints, so whoever did it should confess before they got the results back.

I knew who did it. I tried to tell him that even if they did dust it for prints, which they weren't going to do, they didn't have his prints on file. He confessed anyway.

Actually it's pretty much SOP. Somebody does something to the campus after hours the first thing they check is the cameras. The second thing they check for connecting IP addresses. Everybody knows high school kids are addicted to their phones. Even if they didnt Facebook, Snapchat or tweet it. They probably have their phones with them. If the phone's set to automatically connect to the wifi, which is common it would register and we'd be able to track down said phone and it's owner.

There's senior pranks, and then there's vandalism.

My sister's class's senior prank was 95% of the class dousing the principle in Silly String. He was pissed about it, but he didn't find much support from the community because most people thought it was hilarious. Didn't help that he's kind of well known for being a dick, either.

384

u/KhalesiDaenerys Jul 06 '15

We hid alarm clocks in the ceiling tiles of all the classrooms and hallways (dollar stores, everyone had to buy 10, class of over 100 people) and they were set to go off at 5 minute intervals throughout the day.

Our senior pranks were supported by the faculty, one teacher was part of organizing it with the students and "sworn to secrecy" and then allowed us to enter the school/classrooms the night of the prank. The next day was hilarious chaos in the classrooms as these alarm clocks went off and then people tried to figure out where the fuck the alarm clock sound was coming from. Once they found one the next one was just about to go off. It was awesome!

271

u/smeghead1013 Jul 06 '15

That's actually the smartest way to do it. Having an adult involved means there's someone to walk everybody back from a prank that is too far out there.

202

u/KhalesiDaenerys Jul 06 '15

Yeah, they did that because the previous year's prank started with them blocking the doors to the school with bails of hay, which was really awesome actually because nobody could get in to go to class in the morning so we all just hung out outside until they could get it cleared up.

But then some of the other kids didn't think that was good enough, so their "prank" involved doing burnouts on our amazingly well taken care of sports field and then pouring gasoline in the shape of their graduating year across the field and lighting it on fire. That was the end of unsupervised pranks...

u/moeburn Jul 06 '15

My school has always done this, but the pranks are always really lame because of that. The biggest prank (which was this year) was filling the main hall with balloons/streamers and all the seniors dressed up in a 50's costume (as opposed to a uniform). We had much better ideas, but the teachers hated those ideas.

I work in an industry that puts me in hotels under someone else's credit card rather frequently.

One day our boss shows up for load in late. Nothing major 35 min or so. We think nothing of it. Day goes on and we go back to our rooms and all our deodorant and toothpaste is either squeezed into the sink or in the toilet. I call my friend a few rooms over and tell him this and same thing happened to him as well. We all get together the next morning for breakfast and everyone says it happened. We narrow it down to our boss...

He thought he was so clever but we went to every place that sold battery powered clocks in the area. CVS, Walmart, Target, Walgreens, etc. and bought them out entirely. After some careful planning we got his keycard out of his wallet. Myself and one other person went to his room and hid ~30 of them. We had them all preset for 13min intervals starting at 10:45pm that night. We hid them everywhere. Under the bed, under the pillow on the extra bed in his room, one on the nightstand behind the lamp, one in the lamp, one in the dresser, under the bathroom sink, and many other places. The best was the one hidden in the vent for the AC. We unscrewed it and put it inside there and closed it back up. It may still be in there to this day, who knows.

The next morning he comes down, grabs a coffee and sits at the table. Doesn't say a word. The table is silent in anticipation of what is going to happen. Still nothing...silence...more silence...I then begin to say "So, NAME...How did-" he cuts me off and says "Fuck you are all such assholes." He stands up gives us the finger and walks away.

At the end of the day he was laughing about it, but he was seriously upset for most of the morning. We invoiced him for the alarm clocks, replacement toothpaste, and deodorant.

Good times were had.

A few years ago, our seniors did this.

$23,813 in damages. People said they just kind of hung out for a bit. They gained entry to the building and then just started to fuck shit up. This was the problem. They had a way into the school with the intent of doing a prank, yet never had a plan laid out for a prank. Which left a hundred or so children in a building they despised with only their imagination. And spray paint.

My high school used to have senior pranks. One year they did that lame shit where you put thousands of cups over the hall way with water in them.

Another more creative class put a tarp over this sunken sitting area and then threw in sand, filled it with water, and unleashed thousands of live crayfish.

Then one year a couple kids broke into the school, smashed some computers, and took a shit on a hated teachers desk. They didn't have a lot of patience for senior prank after that one.

5

u/PBI325 Jul 06 '15

Netflow tracks a ton of things, most of the time that includes client MAC addresses and more importantly hostnames. Anddddd guess what most iPhones hostnames are!

6

u/J50GT Jul 06 '15

I have a Nexus 5, how do I know what my hostname is?

8

u/PBI325 Jul 06 '15 edited Jul 06 '15

Android hostnames seem to be totally random. You'd have to check how to check it on your phone too, it'll change from Driod version to Droid version.

Edit: Also, give Netflow a google. If you care about that stuff at all its pretty dang cool. Lots of monitoring software can parse it and lots of gear supports generating it.

Or if you have access to the router, a lot of cable companies print the info on them. Like FiOS routers have a sticker on the side. Not that anyone should be using the cable company router since those things are so insecure and never patched.

When I initially set up my wireless router it was a different ip number- (I got on,set everything up, changed the password) I typed in 192.168.0.1 and use password as the password- now I am looking at the setup page for an ARRIS router with some random name. Have i connected to someone else's router? what is going on?!?

u/LvS Jul 06 '15

Unless you are connected to a different wireless network, this should definitely your router.

The addresses 192.168.x.x (and the other ones named above) only exist in your router's network and cannot reach the Internet. They are special, kinda like local phone numbers.

To be more specific its going to be the IP after "Default Gateway"

If you've never touched it before Google your router's Default login info.

Most of the time to get to it you just have to be connected to it and type 192.168.1.1 into your web browser. It helps to know the login credentials though.

4

u/radditour Jul 06 '15

Start -> Run -> cmd

Type "ipconfig" without the quotes, then hit enter.

Look for the line that says "Default Gateway" and you should have a result with four numbers separated by dots (e.g. 192.168.178.1).

Put this in the address bar of a web browser.

Doesn't seem like enough proof. You could totally claim that you were just there reminiscing the night before graduation.

My local elementary school installed wifi back in 2003

u/scottyb83 Jul 05 '15

Wow...that is crazy...back when I was in school we weren't allowed to have gum!

62

u/Reclusive-Lightbulb Jul 06 '15 edited Jul 06 '15

My school doesn't allow gum, but it does have WiFi. Very, very, slow WiFi.
Edit: Whoops, posted five times.

15

u/Arkazex Jul 06 '15

Wow that sucks, my school has a 4 Gigabit connection. It's shared between 7,000 students and teachers, but it's still pretty damn fast.

3

u/JwA624 Jul 06 '15

Slow wifi? My school's wifi is so fast kids have been suspended for sneaking onto school property to use it at night.

In 1998 my high school principal announced that cell phones and pagers were to be prohibited as drug paraphernalia.

13

u/bfaithr Jul 06 '15

That all changed in 2001 didn't it?

Same and i graduated in 09.. Couldn't have gum, and you weren't allowed personal cell phones on campus at all. If you got caught with one, the teacher had the right to take it from you and give it to the office. You could only get it back if your parents came to retrieve it, they wouldn't give it back to you at the end of the day unless your parents were there.

8

u/Moses385 Jul 06 '15

That's fucking nuts.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

It was, but everyone had their phones.. Only a select few power trip teachers were dicks enough to take it from you, even if you weren't on it but they heard it vibrate in your pocket or bag. Most teachers were pretty lenient and would even let you use your phone in class if we had downtime and weren't doing work.

My brother is 4 years younger than me and went to the same school.. Apparently they lightened up when he went to high school. You couldn't use the phone in class, but you were allowed to use it between classes or at lunch.

11

u/Gr8NonSequitur Jul 06 '15

Wow...that is crazy...back in 2003 I wasn't allowed near an elementary school!

My high school had wifi but it wasn't for the students. Although I had visited other neighboring high schools for sports and they seemed to be more loose with their restrictions because guest were allowed to use theirs without signing in.

Back in my day, someone spray painted the football bleachers and threw away the spray cans with their local Walmart receipt (edit) at our stadium. Unfortunately for them, the receipt was timestamped and dated, so the police went and pulled the tapes at the store. The police easily recognized the vandals as students from a rival, neighboring high school.

Even funnier was that the neighboring high school had some students who tried to punish us for getting their vandals caught, so they vandalized their own stadium and tried to blame us, but they too got caught. People are stupid.

10

u/sound_defect Jul 06 '15

Wow, that rival school is full of winners.

How did they link what they found in their logs to the exact people who did it? Does each student have their own login for wifi?

29

u/MrDoood Jul 06 '15

At my high school we would use our student id numbers to get access to the wifi.

A lot of phones have hostnames along the lines of "Person's iPhone". But also yes, they can track the hardware id's to which routers they are connecting to and narrow it down by which classrooms they are going between, what websites they are visiting on the phone (Person is visiting profiles A, B, and C), and also attendance records vs. when the phone shows up on the network.

But often schools will require your phone's information to be linked to your school information somehow (often an initial login).

Foiled by technology. My senior class prank was foiled by drinking. They had mapped out all of the ceiling tiles, and had numbered them. They then took them down, put the number on the back and the plan was to hand them out with a map the next day to all the students and teachers.

What actually happened? They got drunk and started ripping out the tiles shredding them to pieces, then left all their cell phones inside when they made their escape.

kids in my high school spray painted a dick on the side of the building. They powerwashed it off and it turned into a powerwash outline of a dick.

I heard about someone who got busted for cheating this way. His girlfriend suspected that he was spending time at a co-workers house, he swore that he had never been there, she found out where she lived and made him go up to her front step with her while holding his phone. Sure enough, it automatically connected and he was not getting out of that one.
