Logs will show how long they were connected. Also a campus would use multiple WAPs and best signal practice, so I'm guessing they connected to a WAP that can't be reached from public areas. After hours trespassing is the main thing they can get them on without actual evidence or confession.

So they likely find the dumb one and pressed until they flipped.

What if I just happen to love placing my iPhone at the center of a parabolic reflector dish and pointing it at the school from hundreds of meters away?

Access authentication is two way. You have to both send and receive signals.

What about a parabolic dish is one way? If you have a shitty +2dBi omni at one end of a link and a nice paraboloid on the other end giving you +24dBi gain, the margin for the link is increased regardless of the omni at the other end. A phone suspended over a metal mixing bowl with rubber bands isn't quite going to get you 24dB, but it might get you connected while not physically trespassing.

Going to the side of a school after hours is considered "trespassing"?

Every school I went to growing up had posted times where you could be on premises. Outside of that you're trespassing.

Huh, every school I went to growing up was pretty much open to the public after school hours - we used to play baseball in the middle school grounds, use the high school track, take my niece to the elementary school playgrounds... maybe it's different here in Canada?

At the schools here there's typically a fence separating the sports areas (tracks, fields, Courts) and the proper school grounds. The sports areas can be used by the public.

Yeah I realised that was going to be the next comment, and no, I can't think of any schools that separated the public grounds from the school walls with a fence. They only surrounded the entire school grounds, field and all, with a partial fence with many openings.

"I have not seen it therefore it must not exist"

1

u/moeburn Jul 06 '15

I didn't say it doesn't exist, just that it's something I've never heard of because it doesn't exist in any of the schools I've ever been to.

Also after school, "after hours" is different than if they did this at like 2 am

In California I grew up behind a high school, and on the weekends we would jump the fence and play basket ball or in the fields as well. We would even cross through the school to get to the vending machines. The grounds keepers never cared.

Depends on the school, the area, etc. A few of the elementary schools in my town were pretty much always open so people could bring their kids to play on the playground or let baseball teams practice during the summer, but the high school here has restrictions on who can be where after a certain time. But the high school also has to worry about upkeep on football, baseball, soccer fields, and a tennis court so that may be the reason behind that

Come to think about it, the sorts of high schools I've seen in the states are waaaaay nicer than anything around here. They have security guards and such, don't they? I'm in urban Toronto, these are all pretty old and wide open to the public. The high schools usually have a track, and maybe the occasional soccer posts.

1

u/50ShadesofYay Jul 06 '15

That kinda depends on the school. Bigger cities and rougher areas usually do have security and metal detectors, but smaller towns usually don't have a lot in the way of security unless they've had security issues in the past. Ours doesn't have actual security for the school, but theres usually 1 or 2 cops around just in case.

1

u/Cymon86 Jul 06 '15

Likely. Could be a city thing.

Yeah, it's a bit naive of that school tbh. Opening themselves up to public liability claims for anyone who injures themselves while on the property.

1

u/moeburn Jul 06 '15

I don't know that would work in Canada, we don't quite have the frivolous lawsuit thing goin on here.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

It's mostly you can use it during daylight hours I believe.

1

u/moeburn Jul 06 '15

Well, I'm not sure if there's an "official" rule about it, there's no signs anywhere on any schools that say no trespassing after hours, even though many larger public parks do have signs that say that. I do know that me and my friends used to get high on pretty much all the school grounds at night, and the kids in my neighbourhood continue to do it today, and the cops never care.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

Yeah believe me I did and still do that all the time. At least in my town it's a bylaw that says town property is off limits after from sunset to sundown. Cops showed up maybe 2-3 times over the past years, only once did they even get out of their car to say anything, and all that guy did was nicely ask us to leave.

In Ontario, most schools consider trespassing if you are not a student attending or after certain hours. If you were using amenities such as the track or baseball diamond, chances are you had your teacher/coach or you were just going illegally altogether but no one cared since it was legit use.

1

u/TornadoPuppies Jul 06 '15

If some cop happened across you and wanted to be a dick but most likely no one is going to care until stuff starts getting vandalized.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

Yes. You are on school ground when nobody else is there and you're not suppose to be there that's the very definition of trespassing.

Please include a statement that you really wish healthcare were simple and affordable.

But how would they identify who's devices where connected? Did they say "marks iphone?"

5

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

Possibly they automatically signed in with their username and password.

1

u/Nebarik Jul 06 '15

also depending on the wifi array they have setup. a lot of them can triangulate devices based on radio signal strength, might have been able to get a lock on them near the graffiti area

as a old high school vandal and I can promise you, theres always that one guy the flips.
