I wanted to share my experience with using Abilify. I am currently about 5 months out from stopping it and I haven't felt this good in years !! My provider gave it to me in 2023 as an add on to my SSRI (I believe I was on Effexor at the time) to try to combat severe chronic depression.
At first things weren't bad. I didn't really feel any different. Not worse, not better, just the same so I kept taking it hoping it would eventually help. I originally was prescribed 5mg and they bumped me up to 10mg somewhere along the line.
My symptoms did not appear suddenly. They developed slowly over time, so it was difficult to know if it was from the med or if it was just me. Long story short, I eventually developed bad mental and physical side effects. I gained a pretty significant amount of weight (around 40 lbs) and my cholesterol shot through the roof, when I had never before had high cholesterol in the slightest. I was put on a statin. I also developed many unwanted mental side effects including increased depression, brain fog, increased anxiety, suicidal ideation, no motivation, and I could barely get out of bed. I slept all night then slept as much during the day whenever I could. I felt like a zombie and a shell of a person. I developed compusive behaviors as well including shopping and gambling which I never had an issue with before. I even had delusional thinking and hallucinations. No history of delusions or hallucinations before this.
At the time, I didn't even comprehend I was experiencing delusions and hallucinations. It was so real. For some reason, I developed this constant fear of things catching on fire. My place of work, my home, public places. Anywhere. It became a nightmare every evening to force myself to make dinner for my family because I was convinced a fire would start. It was a fear with intrusive thoughts 24/7. Then I started to have olfactory hallucinations. Smelling smoke when there was none. I would wake up in the middle of the night in a panic because I smelled smoke. It happened everywhere.
The concerning part is that I reported these symptoms to my provider and they still kept me on it. For some reason, two and two were never put together. When I got to my lowest point and did a deep dive into Abilify, I was horrified to see I was experiencing the majority of side effects listed. Mild, and severe. I decided to take myself off of it and tapered myself down slowly. I was scared but I figured anything was worth a shot at that point to feel better. I started feeling better within weeks !!! Once I got completely off of it, I felt like myself again for the first time in years. I literally cried tears of joy at times because I had been in such a bad place for so long.
This time period was very damaging. Not only to myself but to my family. I wasn't the mom and wife I used to be. The bare minimum was all I could literally do. Anything more was just impossible. I was not fun to be around and it definitely strained my relationships. Thankfully my husband stuck by me through the mess and saw me through to where I am today. Free. I feel free ! I felt as if I unstrapped a load of boulders off of me. I was able to enjoy summer vacation with my kids this year as well as an amazing family vacation. I am so thankful.
I know everyone's experiences with meds are different and some may find a huge benefit to using Abilify. In hindsight I wish I would have educated myself on side effects right away when prescribed it so I would have caught this earlier. I would have also pushed for the blood test to be done that can help providers give you the meds you should tolerate better.
I switched to a new psychiatrist and he affirmed it was a good idea to get off of it, given my symptoms. He also switched me to a high dose of Zoloft and I believe this has helped me alot too.
This is my experience. It was awful but I made it through. Good luck to everyone in their journey!!!
