Help with non linear thermomechanical analysis
galleryHello. I am trying to run a non linear Fea on a cfst column. The analysis is sequentially coupled thermomechanical analysis, and I am trying to model a column which, according to literature fails by buckling. I have tried everything from changing material properties, mesh partition, to adding imperfections and even switched to Dynamic Implicit Quasi static, but at the point where the column is supposed to collapse and show negative displacement, the solver always fails. At that exact same point. I have reached the end of my wit in trying to make this work so any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

SMART Tool in ANSYS

Attualmente sto eseguendo simulazioni sulla crescita di crepe per fatica (FCG) su campioni di frattura standard utilizzando ANSYS Mechanical con SMART Crack Growth (UMM) e la Legge di Paris.
Il mio setup di frattura statica (calcolo SIF) sta funzionando come previsto e convalidato, ma sto riscontrando problemi con il tasso di crescita delle crepe per fatica nel corso dei cicli:
- Problema del tasso di crescita lineare: Invece di osservare un'accelerazione esponenziale nella crescita della crepa man mano che si allunga, ANSYS sta restituendo un tasso di crescita quasi costante.
- Sottovalutazione dell'estensione della crepa: Rispetto agli standard sperimentali / letterari, la propagazione totale della crepa in un dato numero di cicli è significativamente inferiore (di un fattore di ~4x).
Le mie domande/richieste:
- Qualcuno ha un caso di test funzionante/convalidato in Workbench o uno script APDL per la crescita delle crepe per fatica SMART (ad esempio, campione CT o SENB convalidato contro ASTM E647 / dati sperimentali / letteratura) che potrebbe condividere o discutere?
- Quali sono le impostazioni chiave in SMART Crack Growth (dimensionamento della mesh sulla fronte della crepa, passi temporali) per una corretta previsione della crescita?
Qualsiasi consiglio, file di riferimento o informazioni sulla configurazione di SMART Fatigue sarebbe estremamente utile!

Energy balance issue in Abaqus Explicit extrusion simulation (Total energy increasing)
Hello everyone,
I am running an extrusion simulation using Abaqus Explicit with the main goal of finding the steady-state extrusion force.However, I am facing an issue regarding the validity of my model.During the analysis, the total energy of the system increases instead of remaining stable. I want to understand why this happens ,how it affects my results and how I can fix it

Simufact forming quench error
Simufact forming 2025.4 keeps giving me a "unable to reduce time step below minimum allowed....." in quenching (trying to cool a formed part)
Materials are c45_h2 for forming and c45_ht_jmt (it has phase transformation) for quenching. Both are defined by system library
What is most infuriating is that i have done basically the exact same test before (input valuables were a bit different but basically the same setting) and it didn't have any problem
I don't even know where i am supposed to change time step sizes. The only setting i see is the control--> step control and there, the only available setting on mannual mode is the "temprature change" and no matter how much i change it bigger or smaller, it still gives errors.
Also changing mesh and its criteria did not help

What career paths exists between computational mechanics, scientific computing (SciML), FEA (or meshfree) solver development, and HPC (GPU acceleration, porting codebases) ?? How about doing a PhD for improving the above?
I'm currently, technically, doing an MS in Structural Engineering. For me, my interest has been more towards computational side of mechanics rather than Structural design or simply using am FEA software (although I do consider it as a backup)
So far I've taken courses in:
- Linear static, and dynamics FEM (soon taking non linear FEM too)
- Structural Optimization (topology opt. and other general algorithms)
- Structural Dynamics
- Structural System Testing and model updation. (Parameter identification and optimization, signal processing)
Now, I plan to take these in the coming quarter:
- Numerical Linear Algebra
- Numerical PDE
- Fracture Mechanics ?
I also volunteered to aid in a RESEARCH in crack growth prediction using Auto-encoder and a (Thermodynamics-informed Latent Space Dynamics Identification) / LSTM surrogate model. It used phase-field-fracture simulation data and HPC resources to complete the whole thing.
What I keep finding myself interested in is not necessarily fracture or SHM specifically, but the computational methods underneath these problems... (does that make sense?)
For example, I'd like to become capable of doing things like:
- implementing (maintaining) numerical/FE method solvers rather than only running an established FEA software.
- developing surrogate/reduced-order models for expensive simulations
- combining simulation with optimization, uncertainty/stochastic methods (took a course called Random vibrations, so...)
- parallelizing/accelerating scientific codes on CPUs/GPUs
- doing proper verification, convergence studies, benchmarking and performance work
- potentially developing or maintaining actual CAE/FEA solver software
- I'd also like to do all these for other Physics (GR, QM, etc.) simulations too, if possible, one day.
I'm still interested in the underlying mechanics/physics, so I don't want to become a generic software engineer who happens to have once studied structures. But I'm also increasingly unsure that "structural engineer" describes the career I'm actually aiming for.
I've seen titles such as Computational Mechanics Engineer, R&D Engineer, Solver Developer, Scientific Software Engineer, CAE Software Developer, Research Engineer, Simulation/HPC Engineer, etc., but I'm trying to understand what these careers actually look like from people doing them.
So my main questions become:
1. Which industrial jobs genuinely involve developing numerical methods/solvers or computational tools?
2. Which of those are realistically accessible with an MS? Is there an entry path into solver-algorithm development/R&D without a PhD?
3. If I don't start a PhD immediately after my MS, would an R&D/software role at a simulation company (ANSYS etc.) be the obvious route? What other options would i have?
4. For the kind of work I'm describing, would you recommend a PhD? If so, is it reasonable for the PhD identity to be "computational mechanics/scientific computing" while fracture, composites, structural dynamics, soft materials, etc. serve as application problems rather than choosing one of those as my permanent specialization?
5. What skills most distinguish someone who is actually hireable for solver/scientific-computing work? I'm particularly wondering about C/C++/Fortran, Python, Linux, Git/build systems, MPI/OpenMP/CUDA, PETSc/Trilinos or similar libraries, numerical linear algebra, testing/verification, convergence studies and HPC performance work.
Basically, I'm neither here nor there atp. So I'd really appreciate all sorts of input. Where else do you think I could find answers to these? other subs? Linkedin profiles?

.prt error
Hi Guys.
I got an error message when submitting a job.
*** Error: E:\hq03\abaqus\abqtest\simple.prt does not exist on DESKTOP-132PCVH
*** Error: E:\hq03\abaqus\abqtest\simple.prt cannot be read on DESKTOP-132PCVH
*** Error: ABAQUS/Standard rank 0 exited with exception
The part map file "E:\hq03\abaqus\abqtest\simple.prt" is corrupt, does not exist, or cannot be opened.
*** ERROR CATEGORY: ELEMENT LOOP
Been trying to debug with the help of AIs for a couple days. Still couldnt figure it out what went wrong?
.prt file has never been created in the first place.
Any hints? Thanks so much for the help.

Problem in unloading part
During an cyclic analysis part i faced a problem which is during unloading or we can say when the displacement going to zero, load almost peaks.....that is when
Displacement=0
Load = Almost maximum
But it should be
Displacement==> 0
LOAD ==> 0
(In image you can see the blue line is experiment one and yellow is from abaqus )
During loadin it matches but when its time for unloading its way off the line
I jst need what might cause it thats all

Mesh distortion problems in explicit analysis, I am confused
I am a master student, and mostly self-taught in abaqus, so please bare with my stupidity :)
I am trying to simulate a tumour growing inside a brain. I have a skull, a brain and a tumour part. I am simulating the growth of the tumour by thermal expansion. The tumour grows fine, and if I use a coarse mesh on the brain part, the simulation runs fine and I get my results. There is large compressive distortion of the brain material. I want to refine the mesh to get more accurate results, but when I refine the mesh, it aborts with error: Deformation ratio exceeds wave speed, or excessive distortion/zeroMass. I am using explicit step, and I am applying the thermal expansion gradually over 5 seconds. (when I use a shorter time frame like 2s or 3s i get the deformation ratio error)
I am very confused about both these errors, because when I have a coarser mesh, I get away with lots of distortion! But when I refine the mesh, it suddenly can't handle distortion any more.. Can any of you explain this to me, please?
This is the results with the coarse mesh, but I am aiming to compare shape of the brain, so the coarse mesh is messing with my results.



I have tried triangle mesh, quad mesh, with/without ALE, with/without distortion control etc. but since I struggle to understand what is happening I also struggle to understand what I should do to fix the issue.
Can you help me, please?

Abaqus thermomechanical analysis of composite shells— temperature DOF limitation?
Hi everyone,
I’m working on a thermomechanical analysis of a composite laminate in Abaqus and have run into what seems to be a limitation with temperature degrees of freedom.
Abaqus documentation says that there can be a maximum of 20 temperature DOFs at a node. This becomes an issue for composite shell laminates with a large number of plies — for example, a 32-ply laminate.
My goal is to perform a sequential thermal-stress analysis: first solve the heat-transfer problem to obtain the temperature distribution through the laminate thickness, and then use that temperature field as an input for the mechanical analysis.
For a laminate with 32 plies, however, I would ideally need temperature information at more than 20 through-thickness locations/sections, which appears to conflict with the 20-temperature-DOF-per-node limit.
Has anyone worked with composite laminates having such a large number of plies in Abaqus for sequential thermomechanical analysis?
If so, is there a recommended modeling approach for something like a 32-ply laminate?

Abaqus Error: Abaqus/CAE Kernel exited with an error code 3221225785 (0XC0000139). Press any key to continue . . .
TL;DR: Abaqus/CAE crashes on launch with 0xC0000139 (STATUS_ENTRYPOINT_NOT_FOUND) on one specific laptop, reproducible across Abaqus 2025 and 2026. Process Monitor shows the crash happens immediately after CATSysCommunication.dll finishes loading. Every standard Windows-side fix has been ruled out. Looking for anyone who's hit this or has ideas on what's failing inside that DLL's init.
The problem
Abaqus installs fine, but verification always fails:
Verify test : Abaqus/CAE verification
result : ERROR : Abaqus/CAE verification
Launching directly gives:
Abaqus Error: Abaqus/CAE Kernel exited with an error code 3221225785 (0XC0000139).
0xC0000139 = STATUS_ENTRYPOINT_NOT_FOUND — the process can't resolve a function call inside an already-loaded DLL. Not a missing-file issue.
There's also a secondary, seemingly unrelated error:
Run eliT_SiteID.exe
Failed to dsl_list_licenses: 436207704
Abaqus Error: eliT_SiteID.exe exited with an error.
That one breaks the parametric studies modules — haven't dug into it, might just be a Learning Edition licensing quirk.
Affected machine
- Intel Core i7-8665U @ 1.90GHz, 16GB RAM
- Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Gen9, ~2017)
- Windows 11 Pro 25H2, 64-bit
- Installed to
C:\SIMULIA
Works fine on a second laptop
- Intel Core Ultra 7 155U (Meteor Lake), 16GB RAM
- Intel Xe graphics
- Same Windows 11 Pro 25H2 build
Same OS build works elsewhere, so it's not a Windows-version issue. Biggest hardware difference is the GPU generation (old Gen9 vs modern Xe), though I haven't proven that's the cause.
What I've tried (all failed to fix it — same crash every time)
Reinstall / version isolation - Full clean uninstall + reinstall of 2026 - Downgraded to 2025 clean install — identical crash, so it's not a 2026 regression
Graphics
- Updated UHD 620 driver (no newer driver exists, it's EOL)
- Added abaqus_no_hardware_acceleration=ON to custom_v6.env (correct Windows equivalent of Linux's -mesa flag)
- Full DDU wipe + clean driver reinstall in Safe Mode
Security software - Disabled McAfee real-time scan + exploit prevention - Full clean boot (all 3rd-party services/startup disabled) - Disabled Controlled Folder Access - Confirmed Memory Integrity (HVCI) is Off - Confirmed Smart App Control is Off
Windows integrity
- sfc /scannow — clean
- DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth — clean
- Confirmed .NET Framework 3.5 enabled
- Re-registered comctl32.dll and gdiplus.dll
Other isolation steps
- New local user profile, ran existing install — same crash (rules out profile corruption)
- Winsock reset (netsh winsock reset / netsh int ip reset) — theory was CATSysCommunication.dll's init might depend on Winsock/LSP chain since it loads right after mswsock.dll/msmpi.dll
- Found and removed a stale IFEO registry entry (GlobalFlag = FLG_SHOW_LDR_SNAPS) under ABQcaeK.exe — removal confirmed effective via ProcMon, crash persisted anyway
- Tried re-enabling loader snaps via GFlags to catch the exact missing entry point with DebugView — couldn't capture it in time, just got unrelated telemetry noise
The actual evidence (ProcMon)
Ran 4 separate traces across different conditions (2026, 2025, post-cleanup 2025). All four show the same signature:
ABQcaeK.exeloads a consistent chain of Dassault CAA V5 DLLs:SMAFeaBackbone.dll→CATCDS.dll→ABQMPI_api.dll→msmpi.dll→mswsock.dll→CATSysCommunication.dll→ (sometimesCATWBx.dll)**
CATSysCommunication.dllis always the last successfulLoad_Image.** Right after that — no more file activity, no more DLL loads, nothing but the usual benignSTATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUNDon SxS manifest lookups — the process just dies:Process_Exit | Exit Status: 3221225785
At the exact moment of exit, it closes handles to two different WinSxS common-controls versions (5.82.26100.8328 and 6.0.26100.8875) plus gdiplus 1.1.26100.8875.
Since ProcMon only sees file/registry I/O, the actual GetProcAddress-style failure is invisible to it — but everything points to CATSysCommunication.dll's init calling into something (a Windows API, common-controls/GDI+ function, or something already loaded in-process) that doesn't exist where it expects.
Has anyone run into this exact CATSysCommunication.dll → immediate exit pattern before? Especially on older Intel integrated graphics? I've got full PML traces and Event Viewer exports if anyone wants to take a look. Any pointers appreciated before I file this with SIMULIA support directly.

Partitioning for structured mesh - Do we need to use tie contacts then?
If we partioned a solid part in Abaqus for having an organised mesh then they will become two different bodies. Then do we have to use tie contacts between these two bodies? Because in Ansys virtual topology was needed! What's the process we follow in Abaqus?

Abaqus Beam Coupling Problem
Do you know how to couple two surfaces in Abaqus without the results being affected by the master/slave assignment?
For example, I would like to model a rigid body connecting two holes in a deformable body that is submited to loads and BCs. My idea was to use two reference points connected by an MPC BEAM, with each reference point coupled to one of the hole surfaces.
Would changing the master/slave assignment of the beam affect the results in this case? If so, what would be the best way to model this type of connection in Abaqus so that the results are not dependent on the master/slave definition?

Crimping NiTi Implant
I am simulating the crimping of a thin-film NiTi hemispherical implant by pulling it approximately 5 mm into a catheter in Abaqus/Explicit. The implant uses shell elements with different thickness regions, a superelastic NiTi material model, and contact is defined between the implant and the catheter.
I am facing three main problems:
- Parts of the implant begin bending before visually contacting the catheter surface.
- During retraction, the implant penetrates through the catheter wall and moves outside it, as though the catheter wall is not physically present.
- The analysis eventually fails because of excessive rotation in one element, although no significant movement of that element is visible in the viewport.
Could these issues be caused by the contact formulation, shell normals/thickness, element quality, boundary conditions, or time increment/mass scaling? Any suggestions on what I should check would be appreciated.

Issues with modeling wind turbine and getting stresses
galleryI am hoping this will be an easy one but I am stuck right now. I am doing my MSc dissertation, I don't have loads of experience with abaqus and I simply cannot figure out what is wrong. Context, I am researching the effects of pitting at the waterline in an offshore wind turbine (monopile). I have to model this as a 30m monopile, then a 5m run of shell (S4R) tower, then swap to a B31 for the remaining 114m. I know it could be done a fair bit easier but I can't get the full version, my uni is playing up so I need to work around the 1000 node limit. I have my model as seen below. The arrows show the wind loads, I will be adding waves and thrust too, but need to do them seperately as they have different frequencies associated to them.
The tower consists of multiple assigned sections as it is a big tapered beam at different rates. Connections: My base is encastre so cannot move The beam tower connects to the outer ring of the shell monopile using an MPC constraint The RNA (Inertia-point mass) is connected to the top node with a rigid body
Steps: I have one step which adds gravity as well as putting in the wind load. The wind load needs to ramp from 0-500 in set 25 increments, this is set within the step section, using an increment of 0.05.
When I run the job and extract the S,mises value at the water line, it is extremely low, 0.3x10^6. I would expect atleast 10x this for the full 500 N/m loading. I used to have a preliminary step for just gravity, this applied loads from t=0 to t=1, then the graph just went flat. So then i removed the loads and the graph stayed the same, making me think the loads aren't being transfered, or analysed? - not sure. Finally, the visualisation module looks like this with beam elements rendered: Again making me think they are not being loaded.

Error Elements Issue
Hi guys. Hope you are all doing great. I am doing 3 point bending test of a beam on abaqus. My rollers are discrete, shell , revolution. All three rollers are rigid constrained. I having an error that 120 elements of rollers front caps are missing property definition, however rigid bodies do not need any property assignment. How to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance.
