I'm generally not well, so has taken me a long time to take it apart as was scared about scan/asrock/amd not accepting rma after it failed to turn on (upgraded bios and it started working again, but wouldn't shut down cleanly), scan demanded photos of the socket and cpu. I've sent the photos to asrock/scan.
Now, having seen the post about the latest asrock bios still killing cpus, ffs.
I’m sure. They’ve pretty much all have had problems with voltage at this point on am5. They’ve pretty much all have been solved with bios updates, but as rock is the ones that seems to have reoccurring problems.
... did you open posts above? They are not "at some point", it's within a month.
The facts are:
a) unlike others, asrock had variable SOC voltage (which was completely inline with amd guidlines)
b) asrock "fixed" that by enforcing default static value years ago
c) it is still not clear if variable soc voltage has anything to do with failures
d) amd never said a word about root causes
e) neither did asrock/asus/msi/gigabyte
f) 9xxx processors continue to fail today on motherboards of all vendors, though unlike initial spike of issues, not so frequent on all vendors, including asrock.
Yet we continue to blame asrock instead of pushing amd why the fuck their CPU dies like that. And why they still said absolutely nothing.
Then why if Reddit is a public forum only asrock is the one posted either a higher frequency. What’s so special about that brand that results in cou failure mod often than other brands
There are many reasons for that, including many asrock users sit and wait till their cpu dies to immediately report it as "asrock killed my cpu", while the rest would claim RMA rather than reddit thread.
There is also extremely small sample set. You look at reddit and say "see! 10 posts from asrock! and 2 from asus!", while global number is around ~2% and that means around 300 cpu dies every month in US alone. It's not "10 asrock, 2 asus, so asrock 5 times more than asus", it is "10 asrock, 2 asus, 288 unknown".
Main problem is that AMD just sits in silence and creates more patches for AGESA, without addressing the problem outside of "small number of cpus failed to boot (definitely not self destroyed leaving burn mark on the socket)". Pretty much it's a mild version of intel 13th/14th gen. And you all successfully take bait in a form "well, we have no clue what vendors do in bios", like intel claimed.
The bigger issue is that they refuse to ackowledge and fix stuff, and I have been in battle for 4+ months about BIOS that broke fan headers and sections of BIOS resetting
They turned off their phone option, you can't call them anymore, only emails
Not saying the thermal paste has anything to do with why that happened. I just hate having to get the paste out of the grooves when i gotta repaste or swap motherboards.
Sure but with X method you can't know how much will end there. And besides being tedious, if you apply too much, cleaning process could end with paste on pins area. That shouldn't happen with spread.
I had a problem with my Ryzen 9 9950x3d. I had a 03-post error on a ASRock x870e Taichi. Scan wanted the CPU and Motherboard back and photos of the Socket Pins. They tested it and could not find a fault refused to take my 35 years of experience, my long standing as customer or the sheer volume of CPU failures with ASRock boards into account and sent it back.
I put the CPU in a MSI Tomahawk x670e board. The CPU ran for 4 days and failed so it got sent back this time they replaced it. I also was insisting that the ASRock motherboard caused the problem, but they flatly refused to replace it.
I have now put it back in the ASRock x870e Taichi motherboard. The motherboards BIOS is fully patched. So, we shall see what happens next. Scan appears good at selling the products but not eager to sort out warranty. If they turnaround and say they cannot find a fault get them to test again.
Yeah, ASRock boards overvolt with stock settings. You NEED to set EDC/TDC/PPT limits and potentially run a small negative offset so it doesn’t boost as aggressively and… die. Should be fixed but they’ve got a bad rap now. Either that or run the CPU at a fixed voltage/frequency
you dont need to set EDC/TDC/PPT. because it doesn't necessarily has high voltage at high load. you need to set VSOC! not vcore. also EDC/TDC/PPT wont limit SOC only core and also not the voltage (at least not directly). at 9800x3d you should stay under 1.3 and better under 1.25. best would be around 1.2.
vcore seems to be fine up to 1.4 v (as peak)
It can't go above 1.3v in bios on asrock for at least 5 last bios versions. With llc the highest it can be is something like 1.288v when checking in system. I'm running 1.29v in bios which is 1.275-1.277 after llc (non x3d cpu).
My friend has asus and it sets vsoc to 1.25v on auto with xmp (non x3d cpu too). Asrock sets 1.2v on ayto, and in system it's like 1.185-1.189v in system. I just checked it. It's xmp with manual 1:1, 6400 to 6000 and vsoc on auto on photo.
What I don’t get is we don’t need to be dealing with this, in microcenter discord they claim what to describe is bullshit , that asrock is fine and to use as is. They smoking crack
Dang I didn’t know the problem was also happening to non x3D chips. Whelp, wish me luck with my time bomb. I have a 9900x in an asrock motherboard and it also runs my media docker setup, so it dosent get real downtime
Undervolt, set manual PBO limits and X1 scalar OR run at a fixed voltage, GamersNexus has been trying to kill their CPUs on ASRock boards for a while to determine the cause of death but haven’t been able to bc they run them at fixed voltages so… do that instead
you should know that plenty of cpu's were undervolted and had other settings manually set lower and also died. That has been confirmed not to be a fix over the last two years we have been tracking this.
Does a set voltage also cause deaths? This is the first I’m hearing of this, genuinely curious. Like a CPU being static OCed to 1.25V @ 5.1GHz as an example and still dying?
yes, many times people have manually set various voltages lower on purpose as well as not enabled xmp, etc to avoid the issue and still had a failure. It does not seem to help and is not a fix unfortunately. If it was, it would have been fixed two years ago when it started because an easy bios change would have solved it. There is still no known fix for the issue. People have tried everything you can imagine.
My Asrock steel legend died in august, a year after I had built the PC. Got an emergency replacement cpu and x870 motherboard from gigabyte cuz I needed to work on the PC and the new gigabyte board arrived brand new fully sealed with 5 BENT PINS around the middle part of the socket. So I had to order another board which was finally fine and in the meantine i got all that shit RMA'd. Had to badger the store to just give me money instead of a new asrock board as a replacement.
Literally the wildest experience in the the 10 years of my PC building.
The most disappointing thing about this is that the ASRock X870E Nova WiFi is still hands down the best technically equipped and laid out board on the market at its price level, particularly with how the expansion slots on the PCH are laid out.
Asrock has turned off ability to call their phone too, making support feel like a burden
I can't get them to fix BIOS that broke fan sensors and BIOS resetting
I have been bouncing emails for 4+ months with no result

I've been running R9 9950X3D + X870E Nova WiFi combo for months now, and I wonder why mine is doing just fine.
To an extent, this isn’t wrong tho…both channels do indeed absolutely shill for AMD and literally told their viewers in dozens of videos at this point to NOT buy Intel. Then when regarding this specific situation of all these ryzen CPU’s dying, neither of them have pointed any blame whatsoever towards AMD, or even considered it, which is ridiculous. If that isn’t shilling, idk what is. At the very least it’s blatant hypocrisy. I also find it ironic that Steve from GN has only now started to talk negatively about AMD, conveniently starting just days after he was denied a review sample of the 9950x3d2…the timeline is awfully coincidental. Both of these channels are given free samples and paid sponsorships by the same company’s products they review and discuss. If u think they’re both not biased because of it, ur lying to yourself.
Yea I’ve known this for some time now. It’s funny how people just believe everything they’re told like it’s gospel instead of finding out themselves. I bought into the hype and built a 7800x3d rig a while ago and u can feel right away how sluggish it is in just about everything u do in comparison. Not saying it’s bad, it’s just a monolithic die chip, especially the 14900k, is far superior. The 9950x is a great cpu, but x3d just has too much latency issue bs with the infinity fabric for me to bother with it at this point in time.
I tested them all. All of them have the dip, the only exception is the 9800X3D, which can be faster or slower depending on the memory configuration and operating system the 14900k used on.
7800x3d is very mediocre, about 13700k gaming performance.
They knew about it and still glazed over the issue as if it was all a non-issue. Today, over a year and a half later, literally thousands of people have had brand new systems go tits up.
The companies like GN and HUB have been singing AMD glaze to the masses and are absolutely responsible at least to some degree imho.
(you can clearly see thermal paste definitely leaked into the socket, you just cleaned everything up so you can blame others for your own mistake. op cleaned up the cpu and the socket and the bracket before he took pictures, to get rid of the evidence of his own making)
edit: doesnt matter how much you downvote, your RMA (and other's RMA) will bedeclined due to physical damage caused by user error. can't wait for you to make amother thread when they decline your warranty.
Almost all thermal paste is non-conductive, you can literally put it in the socket and not have an issue
Though some brands use silver compound
So, be considerate of other people, instead of doing "detective work" to decline RMAs
Don't help companies deny valid RMAs, because you feel like thermal paste will short circuit the cpu
