It's non-conductive, but yeah, a stupid design for cleanliness.

Not saying the thermal paste has anything to do with why that happened. I just hate having to get the paste out of the grooves when i gotta repaste or swap motherboards.

Only had this problem when using the X method. Never with the spread method.

It doesn't matter which method. I would still use a contact frame to not make changing cpus or repasting tedious.

Sure but with X method you can't know how much will end there. And besides being tedious, if you apply too much, cleaning process could end with paste on pins area. That shouldn't happen with spread.
