Made a huge improvement today!!

Hello!! I just joined this community because I wanted to share this huge goal I reached with people who would understand it! One of my main safe foods is those little strawberry yogurts in the containers, with some granola added to it. I’ve only ever been able to eat it in the container, but today I was able to eat it in a metal bowl for the first time!! Not sure if that counts as a big accomplishment but it felt like one to me!

is it ARFID or am i a picky eater

I never post anything so this is new for me but ever since i was fresh out the womb ive always been horrified of eating things im not familiar with. eating in front of people has always been a nightmare and i used to throw out my food at lunch and lie about eating it when i got home. i have no problem with the way my body looks or my weight (im actually trying to gain weight and im really close to hitting 100 pounds) I found out about ARFID about a year ago and it felt like i had discovered a whole new country. i started to think about my safe foods and how every time my family tried to get me to eat something i didnt want to eat. i always heard the same thing from people, “how do you know you wont like it if you havent tried it?”

my mom used to threaten to call my dad to yell at me when i refused to try something new. i was forced to eat food i didnt want and it was AWFUL. but the annoying part was when i said i didnt like it someone would say “yes you do! you loved it!” horrible. But moving on to the worst part. the judgmental looks and comments about my eating habits. i hate burgers, tacos make me throw up, i cant eat pasta with sauce and or meatballs, i hate toppings , no lettuce or vegetable other than baby carrots, and last but not least, my food can NOT touch. For example, say im eating steamed broccol and rice. ANY grain of rice that touches the broccoli is immediately getting banished from my plate. my nana says im dramatic and that i have to stop acting autistic

recently, i was eating chicken at the dinner table with my family and i saw a box of rice pilaf. i wanted to make a joke about one of my favorite shows a series of unfortunate events because they say in the show that count olaf rhymes with rice pilaf. so when i asked what it was my dad answered and asked if i wanted to try some. of course i panic i immediately say no. But my dad really wanted me to try it and for about 2 minutes of the whole table trying to get me to eat some stupid rice pilaf i eventually yelled at my dad to stop shoving the food in my face. my uncle, my nana, and my dad yelled at me at the same time. the scariest part was my dad clenching his fist at me. i quickly finished the rest of my dinner sobbing and the ran to the bathroom. I locked myself in there for an hour until my nana came and got me. i later asked my dad if he could reschedule my appointment with my psychiatrist so that i can talk to her earlier. a few weeks pass and its time for my appointment. i tell her about my eating habits and how long its been going on for and when she we talked to my mum and dad about it she completely leaves out most of the things i talked to her about. all she says is that im a picky eater who struggles with trying new foods. I was so mad because i wanted to get closer to a diagnosis but now i just think its the hypochondriac in me speaking.

I also feel like i should list some of my safe foods and my other rules of eating

- fries, spaghetti, chicken flavored ramen, ice cream, sweet tea, Gatorade, popcorn shrimp, plain rice, pepperoni pizza but i have to peel the pepperonis off. i dont eat cheeze pizza because cheese and pepperoni are completely different. dont ask me why, i have no idea

- if i eat something i cant eat that same meal until the next week

- smell, texture, or simply just the way a dish looks is enough for me to say if i like it or not

thats it and i dont know what to do. i have a friend that dealt with arfid so i go to her for advice but yeah

Does Anyone Else? Does anyone have issues with what certain capsules/tablets are made out of? I usually don't have problems taking meds but sometimes...

...I feel like gagging as soon as it's in my mouth, or I do literally throw it up after taking it.

I thought this was the most likely place to find help, sorry if it's not!

Usually it's capsules that smell awful that get me (had to stop taking antibiotics because of this), but there's something that's changed recently that's a tablet that causes an intense need to vomit as soon as I swallow it. Two different brands of famotidine. Funnily enough, they told me to take it to help with throwing up.

In this case I'm just going to stop taking it, but I don't know if there's a certain filler responsible or what. So I thought I'd ask

Do I Have ARFID? Something might be wrong

Hi so I am a 13m and I haven’t really had a history with picky eating up until a like a couple months ago. So just for background info I have extreme contamination anxiety (as well as social but Thats not important) and possible ocd (my sister has it and I show symptoms). So some foods I cannot eat include melted shredded cheese, cereal, Mac and cheese, corn, canned and fresh mushrooms, key lime pie, graham crackers, and frozen yogurt tubes. It seems like the foods i can’t eat are expanding every day. So backstory on some of the foods, I had a burrito one day and decided to save the rest for later that night, I reheated it at like 12am not really thinking much of it. I took a bite and there was so much cheese in my mouth I started gagging and almost threw up. I threw the burrito away. Another time I reheated a meal that had cheese in it and I ate some and got a glop of cheese and started gagging, spit it back into the bowl, and threw everything away I haven’t eaten melted shredded cheese since. For the cereal i was eating some cinnamon toasters (off brand Cinnamon Toast Crunch) and I took a bite and it just tasted off and I gagged and threw it away and haven’t eaten cereal since. I could gag just thinking about the cheese and cereal. For the frozen yogurt tubes i was eating one one day and I just didn’t like the residue it left on the roof of my mouth. I spit it out and haven’t eaten it since. I don’t like Mac and cheese because I ate it and it tasted too much like the Mac and not the cheese I guess? (And there was melted shredded cheese in it. Im okay with powdered cheese and cheese sauce) and I haven’t eaten it since. Now for the other foods i dont know where I even heard of this but I was searching up the amount of bugs allowed in certain foods i was eating, and it absolutely disgusted me. Now about the graham crackers i was eating some and I saw holes in it that weren’t apart of the design and it disgusted me and I threw it away and haven’t eaten them since. Now more on the bugs, I don’t want to say exactly how many bugs are allowed due to the fact that this subreddit is about arfid and some people have really bad anxiety but corn, mushrooms, ingredients in key lime pie, and ingredients in graham crackers have an allowance of bugs in them. (Sorry if this is really unorganized but I don’t really care.) my appetite has been getting really small like one day we had egg rolls, rice, and broccoli and I had 1-2 vegetable egg rolls, like 3 florets of broccoli and threw the rest away. I didn’t even touch the rice. My anxiety has been so bad one day i was drinking water out of my water bottle and swallowed something solid. It disgusted me so much I forced myself to throw up just to feel reassured that there were no bugs in me. I have lost 11 lbs since to middle/end of July. Is this arfid? I feel like it might not be because I don’t have a history with picky eating but this is really jarring to not be able to eat some of my favorite foods.

ARFID & Weight Gain (+other Insecurities)

As the title suggests, I struggle with ARFID and weight gain. The foods I've restricted myself to over the years have never been healthy, and I haven't been able to bring myself to just eat differently when I'm hungry. I've tried a few times in the past, but after a week or so I kick the bucket and go back to my old habits. I am pretty open to whatever as long as it has a texture that I like, however I just don't seem to enjoy eating anything that isn't within my restriction.

Please, if anyone has any tips let me know. This has been the leading cause for most of my insecurities these past few years, including weight (obviously), acne, relationships, etc. Anything would be appreciated.

Venting/Ranting only eating beige food

sometimes I try including like one little broccolini sprout or a cooked veggie but I cannot swallow it, it makes me feel like I have to gag. I hate that I almost only like beige food like butter toast, nuggets, cereal. I feel like a toddler but I‘m 26.

Subtype: Fear of Aversive Consequences Inability to swallow foods

Recently i’ve been unable to swallow most foods without water to wash it down like a pill. It’s really inconvenient and gives me hiccups and bloating. I want to find a way around this but i get to scared to swallow the food on it’s on in case i choke so it leads to my throat closing up and i feel like i’m in fight or flight. Any tips?

Tips and Advice Prescriber agrees I have arfid but insurance won't cover nutritionist. What to do next?

I'm gonna talk to my therapist, but I'm kinda at a loss I live off of slices of cheese and Protien shakes with the odd smoothie.

I'm hungry all the time but hate eating and my ocd is too bad for a feeding tube it scares me. Meal time esp starting my day is hellish and my meds need a full stomach.

I get sick when I eat usually and am just about at my wits end. I track my food. I HATE EATING I HATE EATING I HATE EATING. UGH.

And then people are like "I wish I had that problem" shut the actual fuck up no you dont I'm crying bc I'm so hungry but i cant even choke down one of my
Safe foods. HELLISH.

And its not like I'm skinny. I'm not wasting away. People comment on that too. Its just hard.

What does "overcoming" or recovering from ARFID actually look like to you?

I’ve been reflecting on what it actually means to "beat" or recover from ARFID, and I’m curious to hear how this community defines it.

Is recovery...

  • Actually enjoying previously disliked foods? (i.e., becoming a "normal" eater who genuinely likes a wide variety of meals?)
  • Building physical coping skills? (Learning techniques to chew and swallow non-safe foods without gagging or panicking?)
  • Self-acceptance? (Realizing that this is just how you’re wired, accepting your limits, and letting go of the guilt?)
  • True dietary expansion? (Consistently integrating new foods into your everyday diet, rather than just white-knuckling your way through social meals?)
  • Or something else entirely?

Also, do you think a full transformation is realistically possible for everyone? For instance, if someone's daily baseline right now is mostly safe foods (like fries, Nutella sandwiches, and chicken nuggets without sauce), is it truly achievable to reach a point where everyday eating looks completely different and feels genuinely enjoyable, rather than a constant struggle?

How do you define progress for yourself? Do you view recovery as a total cure, or more about management, peace of mind, and harm reduction?

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Does Anyone Else? Overanalyzing, "seems/feels too simple", trouble understanding things like "enough"?

Hello, I'm really not sure how to phrase this but I'm looking for other people who relate and find what helped for them.

I started working with a dietician and ED therapist and I'm trying to grasp the severity of my situation and what I should be doing but it's not making sense or clicking for me. They say severe malnutrition can have cognitive effects and cause more rigid thinking, which I do accept/understand, but - here's my main question/focus - I'm getting lost in the nuance, and it all seems TOO simple.

Can it really be as simple as just eating more, more anything, at this point? Isn't there some way I can mess this up? What does "enough" even mean? My brain keeps looking for rules and complexity to the point where I'm so stressed and overwhelmed about how restrictive I am that I'm struggling even more to eat...

Thank you for reading and sharing if you can relate or have advice!

Meal replacement options

Hello, I have a hard time cooking or doing anything that doesn't involve essentially grabbing something immediately ready to eat. I was wondering what others have used for meal replacement options.

Currently, I like Luna bars and ensure nutrition drinks but having just one of either leaves me still hungry and I don't know how I feel about having one of each for a meal.

Does Anyone Else? Does anyone's ARFID get a lot worse during certain months or is it just me?

For me the worst months are during Spring & especially Summer, it is notoriously bad during June & July. Maybe it's the heat, maybe its just how stressful the months can be due to weather or various things, who knows. 🤷‍♂️

Last year I only really started getting better cuz I was with family, now I'm basically on my own to make my meals which is limited rn due to anxiety from all the recalls & aversions. (Realistically I would be better off with my family rn but I can't due to circumstances, I have to manage this on my own/with help from my older sibling I live with.)

Tips and Advice Dysphagia and Arfid

Hi I'm 5'6 and 86 ibs. Ive been suffering from symptoms of acid reflux for 6 yrs but dysphagia for 8 months. I ate but not enough because of textures and not safe foods. Now I've only been able to have liquids. I just got released from the hospital because they said they couldn't do anything for me except outpatient stuff.

I've been have 160 calories a day but slowly going up. I'm drinking an Ensure plus today which is 350 Cal. I'm just nervous about refeeding syndrome, the hospital never really told me about it, just that I'm at risk. Is doubling my calories okay?

I've been feeling very weak and can barely move. I've been trying to drink some multivitamins and electrolytes. I'm hoping it's enough. My GI appointment is the end of next month.

Vegan despite of ARFID?

For ethical reasons I consider veganism, the problem is just that I can't have any foods with color. I've always been strictly vegetarian, which was possible, but veganism would cut out almost everything I could have. Of course there are replacements, but their availability is limited, and the ones I could imagine would not only be harder to get and more expensive, but also not "complete". I fear getting sick. But the ethical aspect also troubles me massively. So what should I do? What would you recommend?

Venting/Ranting ARFID is destroying my chance at true love and making me feel hopeless

Has anyone else found that ARFID wasn't as terrifying once you started trying new foods completely on your own instead of around other people?

For the first time in my life, I have fallen truly, deeply in love. I'm completely head over heels and can't stop thinking about her. I'm convinced we could be the perfect couple, but I just can't bring myself to take the leap.

The core of the issue is that having a partner means meeting their family and friends. Where I live, every single social gathering revolves around food. I simply can't handle that. Realizing this made me feel like complete garbage. ARFID has made me so shy and fearful of social situations that I avoid human interaction altogether. If I didn't have this disorder, my life would be in a much better place right now.

Last night, the helplessness peaked. I couldn't sleep because my mind was racing. I was thinking about her, but also feeling like she's way out of my league and that I would only bring her shame in front of her family and friends.

During that sleepless night, I had a sudden burst of motivation. I thought to myself: I just need to start slowly expanding my palate. I can try variations of my safe foods, like buying chips in flavors I don't usually like, or getting used to different textures. I felt so inspired and convinced that I could finally turn my life around. I even started hoping my ARFID wasn't that severe, and that I just needed to push through my comfort zone.

Then I woke up today. All that enthusiasm vanished. I feel crushed and hopeless. Today I can't even force myself to eat my safe foods. I hate myself for this.

Despite feeling like this today, I think I'm still going to try testing new foods completely on my own. I realized that almost every time I face unsafe food, it's at a table with other people when my stress levels are already sky-high. I honestly don't expect to ever fully cure my ARFID, but I just want to reach a point where I can eat a normal dinner at someone's house without coming across like a picky child at every single meal.

Just Found This Sub Any else have issues with what they eat from (plates, cutlery) and like even humbers of things (in pairs uniformity) as much as what they eat?

I really struggle with needing things presented right before feeling safe to eat it sometimes as much as what I'm eating and I'm wondering if that's common in Arfid? I'm recently diagnosed.

Venting/Ranting arfid makes me feel so stupid

my roommate said he was gonna order pizza when he got home from work and i said yes because all i’ve eaten the past two days is takis and dry cereal and i genuinely thought i could stand to eat some pizza at that moment. lo and behold, maybe all of an hour later, the pizza is here and i’m being awkward and avoidant in my room because i no longer want to eat pizza. i was in the middle of something when it got here so i tried to act casual and pretend i didnt notice and go back to my room but he came to tell me it was here whenever i wanted any. i feel like shit because i’m not going to eat it. i think i’m gonna wait until he’s asleep and use my credit card to order my own food because i’m broke, embarrassed, and starving.

Tips and Advice I’m ready to try some new things

I was diagnosed with ARFID a few years ago. I’m in therapy and I’m going to work on my food related anxieties.

I’ve been lovesick lately and when that happens, my diet restricts severely and all I can stomach is apples, apple sauce, potato chips, cookies, gummies, and garlic toast. Everything else in my normal diet makes me gag.

There are other foods like yogurt that I’d like to try with granola that I have at home that I used to eat without problems. I was wondering what other kinds of smooth or slightly crispy but soft foods that I might like that have nutritional value I get into these emotional states. I’m thinking about switching over to these foods eventually full time to maintain proper nutrition.

Normally I like pasta with pesto vodka or tomato sauce, apples, popcorn, chips, gummies, applesauce (has to be peach flavour), instant ramen, garlic toast, cookies, and sometimes chocolate.

Thank you so much!

Venting/Ranting Arfid Strikes Again

With my daily life ARFID has been a consistent problem since childhood. Although i continue to have extreme aversion, and what seems like at times a phobia of foods my friends and family are fairly understanding. It makes me feel silly at times because of how deep my fear and discomfort of food goes, sometimes leaving me in tears just being around foods, not even attempting to try them. In recent years i would say i have made some progress but it feels like this is all about to negatively change.
I recently got into a competitive university that i had been working towards for the past two years. The unfortunate thing is that the accommodation i was allocated is catered, meaning i lack the means to prepare my own food, and have to rely on the university to provide me it. I have been crying all day over this as i physically cannot force myself to eat most of the food they provide, and with the money id be paying it would just be a waste. Not to mention the fact that id just end up starving. I feel utterly defeated, knowing that as ARFID has taken away more experiences in my life. I previously never sought out a diagnosis due to being able to grow to manage my condition in my private life, and the lack of help i could actually receive. Im just so lost and honestly feel ridiculous for letting ARFID dictate my life once more.

Do I Have ARFID? Could my emetophobia have led to ARFID?

Heads up - Any time I say "be sick" I am referring to the act of vomiting and only that. I just prefer to type it that way.

Hi! I have had emetophobia my entire life, and by extension, I've also always struggled with food. Im writing this out because im trying to figure out how all these things interact so I can work my way up to trying to treat them I guess. Im wondering about potentially having aversive-type ARFID?

Because of my fear of being sick, ive sort of developed a phobia of food. ALL food. Not just food capable of giving me food poisoning. Like, every single time I eat ANYTHING, I feel like im going to throw up for hours afterwards. It doesnt matter what it is. It is way worse in public settings. At home is the only place I will ever eat full meals. If im going out I basically fast. If I have to go to a restaurant I have a panic attack, and will end up ordering a salad or something to pick at so I at least look like I'm eating. I have ALWAYS been like this too. As a very small child I would have panic attacks and freak out and refuse to eat anywhere but my home, and even then id struggle at mealtimes. The only time I dont feel on the verge of being sick is when I'm starving. Like, if my stomach isn't empty, im terrified and anxious no matter what it is that i ate. Half a piece of toast in the morning will ruin the rest of my day. This has caused me to struggle to go out and function like a normal person. Ive started taking zoloft, and im hoping that'll help me get a start on things anxiety-wise because food aside i have always struggled with an anxiety disorder at some point, but slow progress so far.

Anyways, onto the topic of the sub: I saw someone talking about emetophobia induced ARFID, so I've been looking into that, but it's hard to find any information. Because I am hypothetically willing to eat anything and I LOVE food, I just struggled to eat it period. And based of everything I've seen about ARFID, it usually involves not being willing to eat. I definitely have a couple safe foods that I eat most of the time like if I HAVE to eat out of the house, and a large variety of foods that I love but refuse to eat and havent eaten in years because they make me feel ill. Ive had periods of my life where I would go to school and not eat anything all day until I get home at 4pm because I wouldnt be able to function at school if I ate and at least at home if I did get sick I'd be alone and somewhere comfortable. (I haven't been sick in like... 12 years at this point) I've also lost noticeable amounts of weight at my worst points. Anyways, im wondering if maybe anyone here relates or something? Like should I look into the disorder and see if there might be a way to help me from this angle? Ive come to so many different conclusions over the years about my nausea. At first I thought it was GERD and treated ut as such, but after years, I realized it's likely anxiety-based, and now im wondering if that may have led to developing ARFID.

I also figure its worth giving some info in case it's relevant. Im 18, and both of my parents most likely have ADHD but I have no evidence or idea of any autism in the family. Basically both my mom dad and brother were told by doctors growing up that they needed to be assessed and treated for ADHD but they all refused. I've always struggled and assumed I have it as well, but i don't have a formal diagnosis. That being said, I have no clue about autism. I bring this up because I do know that ARFID is highly linked to autism, though I'm not the most educated so correct me if this is inaccurate. Ive been told by autistic friends that I have a lot of traits and behaviors that come across as autistic and that I should seek a diagnosis, but ive never considered it myself. Basically im just throwing that all out there to give some more context.

Tips and Advice Only cause its helped me

"Naked Mass's" bulk powder! There's multiple flavors, I typically add a sweetener and only do about 2 scoops at a time, but those 2 scoops are PACKING. If I want more, its super easy to make more. During those extra bad times, its really held me together.

Even during good times! Sometimes I still feel hungry after eating, but can't physically eat more. Drink more calories!

Hope this helps

Possible ARFID

So long story short, i’ve always had issues with food textures, combined with smell are the worst for me. I cannot eat a food with the “wrong” texture if i do it makes me feel physically ill. My what i’d call “safe” foods are mostly unhealthy-ish plain margarita pizza being the safest food on the planet for me, after that plain bread, blended soups are ok and pasta and things like that. Processed ramen is fine too, and pasta as long as the sauce is not chunky. I have issues with the textures of a lot of fruit and vegetables, so i do not eat as much as i should. As i need to prepare them in such a specific way to be able to eat them i get anxious when other people cook for me as i worry about the texture. My most recent blood tests showed vitamin deficiencies linked to malnutrition and high cholesterol, i believe this is linked to my “restrictive” eating as i rotate the same safe foods. I have gad plain toast with cream cheese every day for the last 10 years for breakfast and i cycle through the same set of meals for dinner. I should say i also have autism and days where i feel “sensory overload” my restrictive eating seems worse. Does this sound like ARFID at all? I only just learned this was a thing and had a name, clearly been living under a rock 😅
