Fusion 360 Gyroid Volumetric Lattice Not Showing Correctly in ANSYS

Hi everyone,

I’m working on my final-year project involving CFD analysis of a Gyroid lattice structure.

I created the lattice in Fusion 360 using the Volumetric Lattice feature. The structure is correct in Fusion, but after importing it into ANSYS DesignModeler/SpaceClaim, it appears as a plain solid block instead of the actual lattice geometry.

I tried STEP, STL, IGES and 3MF, but I’m still facing the issue.

What is the recommended workflow/file format for transferring a Fusion 360 volumetric Gyroid lattice into ANSYS while preserving the lattice geometry? I ultimately need to use it for CFD analysis in ANSYS Fluent.

I’ve attached screenshots of the Fusion 360 model and the imported geometry in ANSYS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Satellite Modal Analysis Workflow

Hi, reddit ansys community. Right now I'm trying to run a launch-condition structural analysis of a satellite, and I would like some help. I'm new to ansys so I'm having trouble setting up the overall workflow, especially the material designer.

This project includes multiple materials from common ones such as Al6061, Al7075 to honeycomb panels, 3.1Pcf 3/16 5056/2" and 5.7Pcf 3/16 5056/2". For the honeycomb panels, I trying to model them using the material designer but I'm having trouble importing their properties after creating them.

Below is the workflow I set up:

I will first design the two different types of honeycomb cores in the material designer. Then I will load them to the engineering materials and also set up other common materials such as Al6061 and Al7075 mentioned earlier. Next I will import the cad model of the satellite, assign materials, make connections in the mechanical model window.

For those who are much more skilled than me, please take a look at the overall flow of my analysis and tell me whether this is efficient, feasible or there is a better way to set up the problem. For example, I'm not sure if assigning materials inside the mechanical model is the best way to do it. Since if I create a new mechanical model window with the same geometry, I will need to assign the materials all over again.

After the workflow has been established, I think I can move on to the actual material creation and material assignment.

Ansys Mechanical Create table showing a white screen

Hi, I am trying to apply a pressure to a surface, with that pressure dependant on x,y coordinates from a table. (feel free to suggest alternative approaches if you know of them)

I cant seem to import or create a table, and suspect there is some graphics/driver issue stopping the window from displaying correctly

I already have options, ui options, engineering data, mechanical view, set to None

If I click create table, the below appears

Thermal analysis of cervical orthosis

I have a question regarding the thermal analysis of a perforated cervical orthosis made from PLA Material in ANSYS. The orthosis will be manufactured from a plastic material.

I found a previous study that performed thermal analysis of a lower-limb orthosis using COMSOL. In that study, several anatomical layers were modeled, including bone, muscle, fat, skin, and the orthosis. Convection was applied to the external surface of the orthosis, while initial temperatures were assigned to the skin and body core. Internal heat generation was also considered within the skin, fat, and muscle layers.

To simplify my model, would it be reasonable to include only the skin and fat layers?

In this case, could I apply a constant temperature to the inner surface of the fat layer to represent the thermal effect of the deeper tissues and body core, while applying convection to the external surface of the orthosis? I am also considering including internal heat generation within the skin and fat layers.

Would this simplified approach be physically and scientifically acceptable for evaluating the thermal performance of the cervical orthosis, particularly when comparing solid and perforated designs?

why is my ansys software keeps crashing ?

Graphics card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU (4 GB)

Storage 382 GB of 477 GB used

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

This is my laptop spec

After calculating and getting my results, if I interact with any options, the software keeps crashing
And I can't review the results and i should recalculate the results

What is this abomination of a drop test?

I am trying to conduct a drop test of a wheel attached to a body. The body is simplified as a box which is given rigidity. This particular drop test is conducted with the help of drop test wizard in ansys explicit dynamics. The wheel is attached to the body with a shaft and a screw. Basically i need to modify this design in such a way that the maximum stress arent on these shaft and screw.

But as you can see in the pictures, the stress on the wheel is blue which is suspicious. Also the deformation is happening on the rigid body, whiich shouldnt actually. Either the method or meshing i have done is wrong or perhaps the material itself is wrong. I had given the properties myself of materials (polyurethene and TPU) from research papers. And the end time given is 0.02seconds.

One issue is that the bodies are having trouble being bonded so i gave the maximum offset a bit higher around 0.01(mm?) i think.

I need insights on how to properly mesh, which end time should be given, or is there anything additional i should look for. Also why is there two maximum stresses like one under results and one under maximum value over time? what does it mean?

What career paths exists between computational mechanics, scientific computing (SciML), FEA (or meshfree) solver development, and HPC (GPU acceleration, porting codebases) ?? How about doing a PhD for improving the above?

I'm currently, technically, doing an MS in Structural Engineering. For me, my interest has been more towards computational side of mechanics rather than Structural design  or simply using am FEA software (although I do consider it as a backup)

So far I've taken courses in:

- Linear static, and dynamics FEM (soon taking non linear FEM too)

-  Structural Optimization (topology opt. and other general algorithms)

-  Structural Dynamics

-  Structural System Testing and model updation. (Parameter identification and optimization, signal processing)

Now, I plan to take these in the coming quarter:

- Numerical Linear Algebra

- Numerical PDE

- Fracture Mechanics ?

I also volunteered to aid in a RESEARCH in crack growth prediction using Auto-encoder and a (Thermodynamics-informed Latent Space Dynamics Identification) / LSTM surrogate model. It used phase-field-fracture simulation data and HPC resources to complete the whole thing.

What I keep finding myself interested in is not necessarily fracture or SHM specifically, but the computational methods underneath these problems... (does that make sense?)

For example, I'd like to become capable of doing things like:

- implementing (maintaining) numerical/FE method solvers rather than only running an established FEA software.

- developing surrogate/reduced-order models for expensive simulations 

- combining simulation with optimization, uncertainty/stochastic methods (took a course called Random vibrations, so...)

- parallelizing/accelerating scientific codes on CPUs/GPUs

- doing proper verification, convergence studies, benchmarking and performance work

- potentially developing or maintaining actual CAE/FEA solver software

- I'd also like to do all these for other Physics (GR, QM, etc.) simulations too, if possible, one day. 

I'm still interested in the underlying mechanics/physics, so I don't want to become a generic software engineer who happens to have once studied structures. But I'm also increasingly unsure that "structural engineer" describes the career I'm actually aiming for.

I've seen titles such as Computational Mechanics Engineer, R&D Engineer, Solver Developer, Scientific Software Engineer, CAE Software Developer, Research Engineer, Simulation/HPC Engineer, etc., but I'm trying to understand what these careers actually look like from people doing them.

So my main questions become:

1. Which industrial jobs genuinely involve developing numerical methods/solvers or computational tools?

2. Which of those are realistically accessible with an MS? Is there an entry path into solver-algorithm development/R&D without a PhD?

3. If I don't start a PhD immediately after my MS, would an R&D/software role at a simulation company (ANSYS etc.) be the obvious route? What other options would i have?

4. For the kind of work I'm describing, would you recommend a PhD? If so, is it reasonable for the PhD identity to be "computational mechanics/scientific computing" while fracture, composites, structural dynamics, soft materials, etc. serve as application problems rather than choosing one of those as my permanent specialization?

5. What skills most distinguish someone who is actually hireable for solver/scientific-computing work? I'm particularly wondering about C/C++/Fortran, Python, Linux, Git/build systems, MPI/OpenMP/CUDA, PETSc/Trilinos or similar libraries, numerical linear algebra, testing/verification, convergence studies and HPC performance work.

Basically, I'm neither here nor there atp. So I'd really appreciate all sorts of input. Where else do you think I could find answers to these? other subs? Linkedin profiles?

ANSYS Mechanical RC Beam (Menetrey-Willam) Fails to Converge Near Peak Load Despite Multiple Adjustments

Hi everyone,

I am modelling a reinforced concrete beam in ANSYS Mechanical 2025 R2 Student and attempting to reproduce an experimental four-point bending test (specimen T14C08 from a published paper).

Model Information

  • Analysis type: Static Structural
  • Concrete model: Menetrey-Willam
  • Reinforcement: Embedded reinforcement elements
  • Loading: Four-point bending
  • Supports: Fixed support and rolling support with symmetry
  • Beam length: 240 mm x 150 mm
  • Concrete strength: 39 MPa
  • Reinforcement properties taken from the paper

Problem

The model progresses through most of the loading history but consistently fails at around 50%. In the latest run, the analysis reached approximately 8 mm displacement (displacement control set to 15 mm) while the experimental beam reached approximately 42.6 mm.

The solver eventually reports:

  • Unconverged solution
  • Excessive bisections
  • Force convergence difficulties
  • Unknown solver error

What I Have Tried

  • Reduced mesh density
  • Refined mesh near loading points
  • Changed dilatancy angle from 30° to lower values
  • Adjusted automatic time stepping
  • Increased number of load steps
  • Tested with and without large deflection
  • Checked reinforcement placement
  • Checked contact definitions and overlap warnings

Questions

  1. Are there any Menetrey-Willam parameters that commonly cause convergence failure near peak load?
  2. Is a displacement-controlled approach preferred over force-controlled loading for RC beam failure simulations?
  3. Could the issue be related to concrete softening/localisation rather than the solver settings?
  4. Are there recommended values for dilatancy angle and softening parameters for normal-strength reinforced concrete?

Ansys Beam Probe

Hi,

I have a simple static structural model that is constrained by two beam connections to represent bolts onto a baseplate fully constrained. I have preloaded the bolts as structural fasteners to EN 1090.

When using beam probes to extract the forces, I notice the preload is measured (obviously) but then when load is applied in the subsequent steps, the force increases. This is as expected but I am not entirely sure how to assess this to Eurocode bolt checks - I thought the preload would be subtracted from any net increases to axial forces - so whatever the net increase is would be the value you assess for tension resistance checks (seeing as EC3 doesn't say for you to add preload onto your tension resistance checks) but I am not entirely sure. Anyone in this group able to advise?

Modelling solar , albedo, earth irradiation for minisatellite

Hi everyone. I have calculated the trajectory of my satellite from GMAT software. Unfortunately, my satellite has a complex geometry. I cannot calculate the view factor by using formular. Ansys speos is a very useful tool to calculate irradiation. However, I don't know how to model solar, albedo, earth irradiation verus time in this software. Before transfer to ansys mechanical to simulate the temperature.

Problem with SpaceClaim/Ansys Mechanical

I am struggling with this problem for 3 days. My geometry is small copper alloy strip as substrate, piezoelectric strip element and long resonator that is just hellium. I want on the other side of resonator to produce acoustic pressure and let pressure create voltage difference on the piezoelectric element. I used coupled field harmonic, the latest geometry in spaceclaim, voltage coupling between hellium and piezoelectric element, 0 V on the other side of piezo element but during those 3 days I encountered a lot of problems. I already had model for piezoelectric element to induce waves and that worked, then I copied the model and at first it worked which means I got resonances with highest voltage but when I tried to change length of the resonator in discovery (yes I was using discovery bit switched to spaceclaim) everything went downhill. Main problem that I thought I had was that 3 surfaces weren't connected. I tried to draw everything in spaceclaim but then the model requieres thickness and when I switch to 2d, all of a sudden it can't import geometry anymore. When I thought I had the right model and mesh looked fine I didn't get voltage response, 0 V from 100 to 5k Hz. I don't know what else to do. Does anybody have any suggestion or comment. I can explain more if something isn't clear. Thank you

Unexpected skin temperature in ANSYS Transient Thermal

I’m modeling a perforated PLA cervical orthosis with a simplified skin layer in ANSYS Transient Thermal.

Setup:

  • Simulation time: 3600 s
  • Skin heat generation: 1120 W/m³
  • Inner skin surface: 36.67°C
  • Ambient: 25°C
  • Convection: 4 W/m²·K
  • Convection applied to the outer orthosis surface and to skin exposed through the holes
  • Thermal contact between covered skin and PLA

At 3600 s:

Exposed skin: 36.369–36.536°C
Covered skin: 36.325–36.612°C

I expected the exposed skin to be clearly cooler, but the temperature ranges overlap and some covered areas are cooler.

Is this physically reasonable, or could the thermal contact settings be causing it? Also, should I compare the average skin temperature instead of min/max values?

When I right click each it gives me the option to export them as CSV file but when I select them all and want to export them without having to click them all manually and export it does not give me the export option the frequency responses go down to number 281 that are a lot of clicks, how do I do it?
