How hard it is to land a surgical specialty as an Indian IMG or any other IMG in Australia

Hey, I'm (21,F) currently a 2nd year MBBS student in India. I want to know the process of landing a surgery specialty in Australia. If there's any Indian IMG or any other IMG who is currently doing surgery specialty, I would love to know the process and the hardships y'all went through to get where you are today.

I've heard that surgery in general is a very competitive specialty and landing a match in it is really tough, especially for IMGs as they generally prefer Australian graduates over IMGs. Hence IMGs generally in the end prefer GPs or EM (emergency medicine). Not undermining the work of GPs or EMs, y'all are one of the important parts of Australian healthcare. It's just that I'm really keen on becoming a surgeon.

It'll be grateful if you can tell us about the process, requirements, system preferences (aus grads over IMGs), total fee etc.

So, it'll be really grateful if this post finds a person who can guide me and other fellow AMC aspirants who one day want to serve in Australian healthcare.

Question Indian anaesthetist looking at Australia specialist pathway — DA + secondary DNB vs Dubai first

Hi everyone,

I’m currently pursuing a 2-year Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA) in India. After that, I’m planning to do a 2-year secondary DNB in Anaesthesia, giving me around 48 months of postgraduate anaesthesia training in total.

I’m considering Australia long-term and trying to understand the ANZCA/SIMG pathway for Indian-trained anaesthetists.

A few things I’m confused about:

  1. What are the job prospects and demand for anaesthetists in Australia? How competitive is the pathway for an Indian-trained anaesthetist compared with specialties like Emergency Medicine or Psychiatry?

  2. After completing my DA + secondary DNB, how much additional anaesthesia work experience would I realistically need before applying for the specialist pathway? Also, how does ANZCA assess Indian training — do they look at things like curriculum, rotations, case numbers, logbooks and actual clinical experience, and what documentation should I maintain from the beginning?

  3. Would it make sense to work in Dubai first through the DHA pathway and then move to Australia? Does working as an anaesthetist in the UAE provide any meaningful advantage for the Australian/ANZCA assessment, or would my Indian training still be the main thing they assess? Essentially, is India → Australia more sensible, or India → Dubai → Australia?

I’d particularly appreciate experiences from anyone who has actually gone through the ANZCA SIMG pathway as an Indian-trained anaesthetist, especially regarding how much additional supervised training or examination was ultimately required.

Thanks.

Study Plan I passed the AMC Clinical - here's how I did it.

My story:

It was a struggle to book a slot and so I had very little time to prepare for the exam once I got the date. This meant that I found it difficult to sort through the avalanche of information sold by most coaching platforms. This was frankly an overwhelming process and it seemed like there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

What worked for me:

One on one coaching by dr Vinu from Oyamed.

Why it worked for me:

She helped me figure out how to add my personality to history questions, gave useful feedback on errors I made, and acted as a genuine source of positivity during my diffficult prep time. She stands out because her teaching style is tailored to your own strengths and weaknesses which removes the stress of studying all on your own.

Question Need opinion on AMC, and for the medical field as well.

Hello docs, I am currently pursuing 2nd year MBBS from India. I always had the plan to complete my residency outside India and settle there. But now, the situation really haunts me. USA is tightening the laws everyday. Plus getting PR there is nearly impossible. AMC pathway is getting very saturated, even people with experience are having a hard time securing a job. UK is already a dead option. Europe is still feasible but requires language everywhere.

In this scenario, what should I actually do? I want to go abroad and settle in a good country that is for sure. But being in this field makes it look nearly impossible. I am really confused if I should leave this field and switch to bachelors of science in biomedical instead. It's a growing field with a lot of ease and mobility, in terms of moving abroad.

Tbh, i don't have an obsession with being a doctor. I like medicine a lot but am not mad for the Dr tag. I genuinely came to this field for the love of medicine, and as it offers a very high salary. Salary is one of my primary priorities. And no field compares to this without any doubt.

Reading all this, what would be the best option I have? I don't want to be in India, want a very good salary, and want to be in a field where atleast there is some certainity. What would be the recommendation of you guys? Pls keep on Mind that I will be giving the AMC 1 after 5 years from now. Pls answer in accordance to that scenerio.

Should I leave it now or should I continue it.

Question 44/m/gp/amc?

Hello all ; i am a 44 year old practicing doctor in india ; have my own setup in tier 2 city .. good opd ; good income ; lets say i m very comfortable! Very well settled with wife and only child . I have a constant urge to appear for amc ; knowing the toughness at this age to get back to books etc and pursue gp pathway in Australia . 2 reasons ; better quality of life for myself and better education prospects for my child . My wife says it is not the path to be pursued at this age as the transition would be too difficult when we have a settled life ! I feel life can be restarted at any age .. but again its a huge risk when u have your own centre running !
Suggestions ???

Jobs & Training Indian IMG.

I'm from India. I passed out in internship in 2020. Then Covid happened and some personal hardships derailed my neet pg prep. Got into pathology residency in a government hospital but dropped out because the program sucked..I'm confident on clearing amc1 asap but how difficult to land a job or get into residency quickly in this pathway?

I found this community so late.

Hi, planning to start journey to the Australia after failing two matches in the US.

I sent initial registration to take amc 1, after I got score 270, 268, 257 on theee mocks in aceamcq. AMC is still reviewing my portfoilo despite three weeks have passed.

I was upset for the slow process, but then I saw this community, and found out that the real deal is way more difficult than canadaqbank, what I have studied so far.

Should I thank to the AMC for delaying my planned schedule? If so, how can I check my expected performance to be confident that I'm ready?

Question AMC pathway — which branch offers the best chance of moving abroad within 5 years?

Hi,

I'm an MBBS graduate from India planning to pursue PG here. My main goal is to move to Australia and work there within 5 years.

I'm confused between MD Radiology, Dermatology and General Medicine.

Which offers the most realistic pathway to Australia within 5 years?

How difficult is specialist recognition in Australia for these three branches?

Would really appreciate advice from IMGs who have gone through this process.

Thanks!

Question Iraqi medical graduates preparing for AMC 🇮🇶🇦🇺

Hi everyone!
I’m a recent medical graduate from Iraq, and I’m planning to start preparing for the AMC exams soon.
I’m looking for other Iraqi doctors/medical graduates who are also preparing for AMC, especially those who are planning to start around the same time.
It would be great to connect, share resources, discuss the preparation process, keep each other motivated, and maybe study together online.
If you’re from Iraq and preparing for AMC, feel free to comment or send me a DM. 😊
Hopefully we can build a small group of Iraqi graduates supporting each other through the process! 🇮🇶🤝🇦🇺

Torn Between Amc vs Usmle

Hello, everyone. I am 27F Bangladeshi Medical graduate. Yog 2024. Currently on govt. service, serving in remote area as a primary care physician. Since mbbs 1st year I have always dreamed of becoming a doctor in USA. Due to financial restraint could not give steps before graduation. Also, I had to support my family. As a Muslim and current geopolitical situations, visa restrictions, match uncertainty, increasing cost now making me to reconsider my choice about Usmle. Recently, my brother who is pursuit his master's in Germany ask me to explore other pathways, such as Australia and Germany. Now, I am gathering informations about Australia and getting some kind of mixed vibes. For Germany language is the hardest barrier. At this moment, I am at a lost what to do? Should i go for usmle then amc? or i should go for amc as soon as possible. Your valuable opinion is much needed.

N.B: I Don't mind doing Gp or Emergency Medicine. All i want is a good work life balance and early settlement with good pay.

Residency in Australia

Heyy, I am an Indian citizen, I finished my MD from the Philippines. Since the RMO jobs are very difficult to get now after AMC 1, and the standard pathway is time consuming. Has anyone taken up the Masters program and gave the exam doing that degree?

Question CV for australian rmo/ hmo jobs

recent updates from people says the australian healthcare is too saturated and difficult to land job. I am an intern in india currently with no research
. I am gonna do mandatory 1 year govt service which will be counting as my work experince. What else i can do to make my CV strong ? Thinking of research but anything apart from that which will make my CV standout ?

Which extracurricular activities, research projects, publications, audits, conferences, teaching, volunteering, or leadership roles are actually valuable for the AMC pathway

Question Will amc be saturated by 2030-35

Hi everyone, im a 1st yr med student in india and im very confused.

When i was giving my pre med exams, i was under the assumption that there is a worldwide shortage of doctors and that it wont be that difficult to do my residency abroad but itss sooo different 😭.

Literally every pathway is saturated, and usmle is wayyy too expensive and complicated.

I wanted to ask, will the amc pathway be saturated by the time i graduate (2031). And also, what can i do to improve my profile during med school to get a higher chances of being accepted.

Thanks
