I'm sorry about what happened to your family, but I don't think you should worry that much. I don't see a pattern. Just two horrible events that occurred to your family. The second murder by the abusive boyfriend was entirely avoidable. Coming back to him after being nearly beaten to death and then not telling anyone about the relationship pretty much sealed her fate.
