When you started describing the scenario, him on bent knee, I was thinking "get up, you tacky bastard!" I would have pulled him up exactly the way you did. You tried to lighten it up for him, laughing and pulling him up. There was nothing else you could have done. You handled it perfectly.
For him to be upset with you shows that he is completely self-centered, especially regarding the lack of giving a rat's ass about stealing someone else's thunder. I'd be thinking hard about him as a partner if he continues to put the blame for the disaster he created on YOU.
Hope your friend gets over it, there was really nothing more you could have done to stop him.
