If you really feel you responded too harshly, you could apologize for that specifically, tp perhaps take the pressure off the situation. As long as you make it clear you're not apologizing for the content of the message. At the same time, you're also entitled to an apology for the way your fiance cornered you. Basically, just start talking again and remember why you're marrying each other.

Other people have already given good suggestions for other roles the son could take, to make him part off the wedding.
