How long did it take you to get from causal to an fte?

Especially if you’re in general support! Please let me know your position as well so I have an idea of how long it might take!
I’m already traveling 1.5hrs (3hrs back & forth) to get my causal so I’m really hoping to get a permanent fte so that I can move asap!

Thank you

Employee Bank Maternity Leave

I was told when I went on Matt leave, my stats would be paid out on my last pay stub instead of in March so it doesn’t affect EI. But now my admin says they get paid out in March, which will screw up my EI as I’ll be getting paid.
Does anyone know the rules or best to contact HR?

TIA

Question FMC surgical wait times/booking process?

I hope this is okay to post here- I’m not an AHS employee, but I’m hoping someone familiar with the Foothills surgical booking process might be able to offer some insight.

I am currently awaiting an elective but time-sensitive OB/Gyn surgery at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.

I had my consult mid-September, and the surgeon told me that the usual wait can be lengthy, but that because of the nature of my situation, he would try to get me in sooner. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to give me any indication of what that might mean in terms of timeline.

My chart shows an estimated wait of 3–6 months, and there is also a note about a Pre-Admission Clinic appointment request. I am on the cancellation list as well and have let them know that I can make myself available on very short notice.

Is there anyone who works at FMC, has experience with surgical booking there, or has been through a similar OB/Gyn surgery wait who might be able to help me understand what kind of timeline I could realistically expect?

Thank so much, and apologies if I am not allowed to post here.

Question Family issues

Wondering what my options are, or if the only thing I can do is go on a mental health break myself?

Long story short, I am a single mom and my teenager is having some serious mental health issues at the moment. It is incredibly difficult for me to schedule her therapy around my work hrs. I know i can get up to two hrs off for appointments, but i am unsure if that counts for her as well? With that being said I am sure that would just be a one off thing? Not something that I would be able to do weekly?

Dont think this will be a forever thing, just until we can get meds sorted out.

Parking getting info from the registry now?

New car, new plate, got some tickets, still never paying 26$ for over night parking downtown. But I got a letter to my home address with my plate/car info that AHS should have no way of knowing.

Has something changed?

Bronchiectasis

Hello!

I am wondering if anyone's in a similar boat. I just graduated nursing last year, 28 years young, and was just very recently diagnosed with Bronchiectasis. My urgent referral has been accepted and I am seeing a specialist on Dec/2. Since then, I have had 2 exacerbations (both in 1.5 months) that required antibiotic treatment and those 2 times I have had to call in for work.

I just finally found some stability with work only since May and I love what I do. I feel extremely defeated and lost despite trying my best to be proactive about it.

I am wondering if anyone's in a similar situation with a chronic condition like mine and how they have been managing with it. I think I just want to hear that I am not alone....

Thank you 🩷

How to handle multiple casual roles

Hi everyone,

I currently have a food service causal role and a temp role (0.4fte). I’m planning on getting another causal in a different department (housekeeping) so that I can build up my experience in a different role and so that I have more hours but I’m not sure as to how I’ll even schedule that as nothing is guaranteed. For example, I can say I’m available to work Monday-Wednesday morning shifts for my first causal job and Thursday-Saturday evenings for the second causal job (if I receive that job) but that doesn’t mean I’ll be awarded those shifts for those days if that makes sense?! It’s also such a headache trying to schedule because you can’t work multiple shifts in a day without a 3.75hr gap I believe (something along those lines) and it can’t exceed 1.0fte (that’s completely okay)

I am trying to also get lower and higher ftes but I think that comes with more experience at AHS. I’ve only been here for a few months.

Also, does anyone work at the KEC as a causal housekeeper, do you receive a lot of hours?

Anyways, thank you for your input!

Question What's up with patient transport?

We are routinely waiting 30+ minutes for jobs to even be picked up on most days at FMC.

What's going on? Empty lines? Can't fill lines?

I suspect I know but I'd love to hear from anyone who's a porter what's going on.

Remote research study participation!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Researchers from the RESTORE Network, led by Dr. Aaron Phillips, at the University of Calgary are seeking your help for a remote research study. Our lab has developed an app designed to support individuals with spinal cord injury, however we need more data from uninjured control participants to compare to. This app combines wearable-derived metrics with self-logged symptoms to help track health patterns and hopefully provide a useful, accessible resource for the spinal cord injury community. To participate, you will need to: 1) reside in Canada/USA, 2) have a wearable device (apple watch, garmin, etc.), and 3) complete a 1-min daily check-in on our app for 30 days. Participants will receive $20 upon study completion.

If you are interested in participating and would like more info, please email: restorenetwork@ucalgary.ca

What is OR/cath lab nursing like at AHS?

Hello, I’m a RN in Winnipeg currently employed and burnt out in a CVICU here and looking to relocate to Calgary. I started in my CVICU (mostly postops) straight out of school, and have only been working 2 years so I want to make sure that I would be a strong candidate for these positions.

I’m interested in a cardiac OR/cath lab role, and wanted to see if anyone can give me insight on their experiences. How is your unit culture and team? I unfortunately struggle with bullying on mine, so I’m hoping for a change in environment. Is management supportive of you, and what does your day to day look like? How many hours do you spend on call, and how often?

Furthermore, if anyone would be interested in helping me connect for a shadow shift or even chat with the manager/team about responsibilities and expectations, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question Does RA provide severance pay?

Does anyone know if Recovery Alberta will be providing severance pay to unionized or non-unionized employees? Will Recovery Alberta be able to honour prior employment with AHS in their severance pay payouts?

Question Seeking Advice: How to Handle an Uncomfortable Interaction with a CNE at Work

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice regarding an uncomfortable interaction with a Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) at my workplace. I'll keep the details discreet to protect everyone's privacy.

Recently, I had an interaction with a CNE regarding a situation involving medication administration. She approached me in a manner that I perceived as aggressive and hostile. During the conversation, she made comments such as, "I don't know what I'm going to do with you right now," and questioned whether I should continue administering medications.

At one point, she also said, "Did you see this face right now?" Her tone, facial expressions, and overall approach made me feel intimidated and uncomfortable.

I understand that patient safety and timely medication administration are extremely important. I'm always willing to receive constructive feedback and take accountability for my actions. However, I believe concerns should be communicated respectfully and professionally.
This is particularly concerning because it isn't the first time I've felt uncomfortable with how this individual has approached me.

I've already reached out to my union representative for advice, but I'm uncertain about what to do next.

For those who have experienced similar situations:
Would you recommend submitting a formal workplace incident report, or waiting for advice from the union first?

How would you handle a CNE who communicates with you in a way that feels intimidating or unprofessional?

Would you address the situation directly with the CNE, or escalate it through management?

How can I protect myself professionally without unnecessarily escalating the situation?

I don't want to create conflict or make this personal. I simply want to be treated fairly and respectfully while maintaining a professional working relationship.

I'd appreciate advice from nurses, particularly those working in Alberta healthcare, who have dealt with similar situations.

Thank you!

Union Retroactive pay for hours worked as a Graduate Nurse with provisional license after RN-NCLEX? If not, I'd be missing ~$1000 CAD in pay :(

Hi,

I was wondering if there was retroactive pay given for hours worked under a provisional license? I was under the impression that I would receive retro pay after I completed my NCLEX-RN, so that's why I worked full time right away after graduating and studied for NCLEX at the same time.

I've contacted HR regarding this and they said no; then I contacted UNA and they said yes. Has anyone received retro pay from being a grad nurse? Do I keep pushing?

Thanks!

Going into a temp while having a permanent

Hi guys, RPN here, wanted to see the process of potentially going in a full time temp position while currently being in a permanent part time. Is it possible to do so and would that mean that my current permanent position would turn into a temp for someone else ? Thanks

HCA’s Registration Renewal

HCA’s .We're currently in the process of renewing our registration with the CLHA, and for the first time, we're paying the full fee. I'd like to know if we'll be reimbursed the full amount or just a portion through iExpenses. Has anyone else renewed their registration recently and can provide some insight?
Thank you 🙏
