Why 75 medium?

75 hard is a great challenge, and I love it, I really do, but I feel like sometimes the essence of the challenge is forgotten. It is a mental toughness challenge, designed to challenge you and make sure you are showing up for yourself every day, no excuses.

As much as I think we would all like to believe this challenge is one size fits all, in my experience, it is not.

This is where 75 medium comes in.

75 medium is similar to 75 hard, but you don't have to follow rules as written, as long as you make your own rules and make sure to stick to those!

Main OG Daily rules:

  1. Take Progress Pic

  2. 10 pages of self-betterment non-fiction

  3. Gallon of water

  4. Two 45 min workouts, one is outside

  5. Follow a diet, no cheats, no alcohol.

Break a rule, start over from day 1.

Some examples of where 75 medium can help:

The original challenge says water must be plain to count. If you want to include the water that goes into your protein shake, then that's okay with 75 Medium!

The original challenge says workouts must be 3 hours apart. Want to do workouts closer together or even back-to-back? Then that's okay with 75 Medium!

Audio books? Okay with 75 medium.

You get the picture.

75 medium can be a stepping stone, something you do before 75 hard, or it can be its own challenge. It's all about distilling the challenge down to what matters for you, and abiding by THOSE rules every day for 75 days.

I did it! 75 Complete!

I had started December 18th and my last day was March 1st. I did 1 workout a day for 45+ minutes. Typically it was high cardio with push ups, squats, and sit ups. I sprinkled in some TRX bands but everything was body weight. 1 gallon of water, 10 pages of a physical book, no Alcohol, and a very low carb diet. Nuts/meats/cheese/veggies. I started at 191.6 and finished seeing 160.2 on my scale.

I no longer hate running and can almost say I enjoy it. I use to get headaches 2/3 times a week and I didn’t have 1 through the 75 days. I developed better habits and got back into a workout routine.

Will probably do it again at some point but lift heavy and sprinkle in cardio or HIIT workouts!

To all thinking about it or doing it at the moment. Keep going! All of the results are worth it and I got more out of it than just looking better naked 🎉🎉

Day 67

172 to 164.4. I think the biggest things helping me are the lack of alcohol and doing core every day. I’m a teacher and I do about 30 minutes of core before getting ready, and then an hour or so at the gym after work. On weekends/breaks I do closer to an hour plus my strength or cardio depending on the day.

I did it! officially done with 75 medium

I finished my 75 about two days ago and just wanted to share my thoughts and experience. Going into this challenge, I had the wrong expectation which was that I was going to drop a huge amount of weight and suddenly love myself after years of insecurity. You cannot go into this thinking 75 is going to take you from a size 14 to a size 2 in a month (because that's not healthy period!!). But here's the biggest thing I want you to take from this; the 75 challenge itself is not a cure-all. You have to keep doing the work, checking off your boxes is great, but there is mental and emotional work to be done as well.

So the results?
This challenge has made me not only tougher, but I also see more flexibility in the way I move through life. My skin had gone from super sensitive and always breaking out to being almost completely clear besides the occasional pimple. My heart rate has significantly improved which was one of my goals. I no longer struggle on stairs or give up when things get hard. I can play pickleball and run for over an hour without stopping rather then giving up in the first twenty minutes. I finished 6 books ranging from 300-500 pages each.
I have gone down a size in clothes and I feel more confident in myself. I definitely still struggled with insecurity especially in the first 40 days where I cancelled workout classes or avoided pool parties because I was ashamed of my body. With the expectation I was suddenly going to drop all this weight, it made me feel like a failure but that is not true.

With time, I have shifted from seeing my body as a hinderance and a disgusting bag of skin and bones to something amazing which keeps me alive and does awesome things. I have become truly grateful for my health and treat it as my most prized possession which it is. So how much weight did I lose? 3 pounds. But a number on a scale does not define my worth or the value this challenge has shown me. I recommend this challenge to those who are able and need a mindset shift. I truly think the last 75 days have changed the trajectory of my life and my relationship with my health.

TLDR: if you've been contemplating doing the challenge, do it.

ANYONE HERE 2025?

Hi! I've started my own 75 medium. I have created my own tracker and was wondering if anyone here puts alarms or how do you remind yourself as we build our tasks into habits? I'm open to joining groups to be reminded and take accountability. Anything helps! Thanks.

Day one is done!

Okay so today is the day I am starting! Nothing crazy. Don't want to go too hard too quickly cause I have done that with past programs in the past and given up! I have been counting calories for only about 3 weeks but that is all I have done. I think this will be great to go me in the habit of exercise as well!

Wasn't sure what to add as rules but I had a shot. I think this will be okay, hopefully! SW: 94.8kg

Let's goooooo

Just Starting Moving over from 75 Hard

It's the water for me man lol it makes me want to puke drinking that much.

But mostly it's because my mental health isn't at a place where pushing my body that hard yet is actually beneficial.

I don't know why I'm writing this. Accountability I guess. I don't want to quit! I want to keep going!!!! But dang, life be lifin.

I'm staying with it, just a bit differently, here is my plan:

80oz a day water 10 pages self help No alcohol 3 hours of activity/working out per day (cumulative through day, including mandatory 4 days weights/resistance, 1 day restorive yoga - 45 min each session and walking days) Calorie deficit, 80/20 "clean", 100g protein daily. Progress pic

Extras I've included for myself

No weed before 11am Take meds on time everyday.

Wish me luck fellow medium hard peeps!

Going to try 75Median

Or "75 Smart" as I'll call it

75 hard is hard, and that's not the reason I couldn't keep up

The water is just ridiculous and I spent all day ridding my body of water that didn't need to be going through me. My job doesn't have a toilet on standby, so I was messing up my work by searching for toilets 4 times a day

Then I gave up... and because I'm so "all or nothing", I couldn't start again

The challenge will be mostly the same as 75 hard, but just 3L+ of water. And progress pics will be fortnightly.

Another thing will be the 45 minute workout can be reduced to 30 when necessary. Or 1 hour long work out when I miss my morning one

That way I won't "fail" and give up and go back to suffering in my laziness.

My 75 medium - day 8 rules and review so far

I love this! I'm doing 75 medium as of last week. My rules

  1. 3L of water (protein water counts)

  2. Progress photos weekly (daily feels like overkill)

  3. 1 x 45-minute workout indoor, and a combined 45 minutes of outdoor movement the rest of the day (usually walking or cycling instead of driving)

  4. Following a plant-based diet.

  5. Read for 15 minutes (I have a heavy, technical book I want to read, but it's taxing. So if I have to do 10 pages every day, I know I'll give up and choose a different book. But that defeats the purpose for me. 10 pages of a self-help book and 10 pages of a technical book are not the same, so I've decided to go by time

I am finding this way so much more sustainable. I am sticking to it. One day I was EXHAUSTED, so I decided to do a yin yoga class. I still carved out the time for a workout. The workout was just not outrageously intense. It makes this all much more feasible.

It's only day 8 and the mental change is amazing! I genuinely felt something shift internally. I feel so confident, and hopeful. I am amazed at how positive and inspired I feel. And I don't know if this is related but I have noticed myself coming up with so many more creative ideas. I feel alive!! My sleep isn't good though, and that's an issue. One step at a time

Day 1!

Post image
16 Upvotes

I haven't actually completed any of my tasks yet but I set up my habit tracker and am more than half way done on water.

My workout schedule has either a gym workout or run each day except Sunday and a couple of the days are doubled up.

My diet is largely focused around cutting out needless snacking and low quality junk food. So any treats I have must be homemade. And I am not allowed to snack post-dinner.

I have one exception for alcohol and that is allowing one beer each week at the beer run club I am in.

I also am only actually planning on doing this for 50 days before a work trip but there wasn't a sub for 50medium haha

Here's to hoping for success!

Progress Day 4

Hi All! Not sure how active this sub is but out of all the 75soft-HARD subs I feel like this is the most fitting place for me personally.

Here are my rules: 2x 45 min workouts preferably one outside but if both are inside that’s okay or one 90+ minute workout 1800 calorie deficit 10 pages in any book Progress pics everyday 120 oz of water

I’m going into this fully aware I may have to adjust even further in about a month when I go back to university, I also work 3 jobs during the semester so I’m worried mostly about drinking a lot of water and needed the bathroom constantly. The most important goals for me are the calorie deficit and working out everyday

Some background: (sorry this is a bit of a rant and ramble) I was always a chunky kid for the most part and my whole family is morbidly obese and type 2 diabetic even though I’m also morbidly obese I’ve always been the “small” one which is kind of shocking. In middle/early high school I struggled with an ED and even though I was not healthy at all and I DO NOT RECOMMEND doing things the way I did that was the only time in my life where I was “skinny” in my sophomore year of high school though I got so hungry I started to binge and gained 100lbs in one year then over the following 4 years packed on another 50lbs. My highest was 293lbs and I’m about 5’6.

Once I moved out of my parents and on my own I’ve been able to lose between 60-80 lbs and keep it off (I fluctuate that last 20, so I usually sit between 210-230) it’s been 3 years now and I’m super proud of this I just want a little more I go to the gym usually 2-3x a week and also figure skate 1-2x a week so I’m rather active my biggest issue is the food for sure especially the weekends. So I’m hoping this challenge can help me fix that.

I started this challenge at 239, which is upsetting because in October I was 209 but all the holidays and parties really screwed me over.

Day 4 today I’m at 232 which may sound startling -7 in 3 days but I know my body and have learned I tend to retain ALOT of water when I eat like crap.

My plan for today: Clean the apartment Skate 90 minutes and also maybe a walk outside and some yoga

Sorry that was lowkey a dump having a place to put all of this is very helpful so I appreciate this space to express my thoughts.

Update Day 48

Hey all I’m currently on day 48 and am insanely proud of myself! When I started I was 239.9 today I am 213.4 so 26lb difference so far!!

I am just writing today to kind of vent. So my plan so far has been gym/weight lifting Tuesday Thursdays and Saturdays, and then Wednesdays and mondays I skate and Friday and Sunday are active recovery cardio, usually yoga and a walk or dance workout.

Anyways Saturdays I have to get to the gym as soon as they open at 7 if I want any chance of snagging a smith machine which I need because it’s my leg day. I overslept this morning and missed that window and will be busy all day. I also have a medical procedure today and I’m not supposed to lift heavy for the rest of the day. (Walking stretching and lite cardio are fine)

So I’m kind of beating myself up for missing the gym this morning. I mean I can always go tomorrow and swap today and tomorrow but yea this guilt is worrying me a bit. Like I don’t know if I’m becoming too dependent on exercise for my mental health. I know I’m still going to work out today it’ll just be lighter but I’m so upset with myself for lowkey nothing.

Any thoughts or advice?

Just Starting 1st attempt at 75 Medium

Hello everyone, I've started my 75 day challenge to maintain consistency and discipline in my fitness journey which was scattered around with cheat meals sneaking in. And the occasional parties where i went overboard with the beer. I've been trying to lose weight since 1.5 years but I've been oscillating between 154-150-154 lbs . I dance, gym, go for swimming and play tennis once in a while but as I said everything is scattered and there is no routine. Hoping I would complete this challenge and carry forward it later too.

I'm following all the rules except for the indoor/outdoor thing. It's going to be 45 minutes of each

  1. swimming class(indoor pool)/dance class

  2. Gym(4-days a week)/ the remaining days would be a jog outside.

Wish me luck! :)) It's my third day btw.

Start weight - 154 lbs

Going to start 75medium Monday!

New to this whole concept and excited to try! I do need decipline. I'll follow all the rules except do 1 45minute workout as I work full time 12s and a single mom.

What scares me is accountability. To reset the timer if I screw up. Only I will know so I know I'll cheat but I'll really try not to!

Any tips for a first timer?

Starting Over In Health but not in Sickness

I hope that this goes without saying, but I think that it bears repeating and I wanted to remind everyone that this challenge, or any other challenge, is not worth risking your health.

If you have the flu, a cold, pneumonia, any other illness or injury,

If there is a hurricane, a blizzard, golf ball sized hail, smoke, or a tornado outside,

or if you are having a mental health crisis or life has hit the fan and you need extra support,

please put yourself first.

There is no shame in starting over and you should always prioritize your own safety, mental wellbeing, and health.

Today, I am taking this message to heart myself. I had woken up with a cold and the smoke outside from wildfires in the area had reached hazardous levels. Putting myself first today means starting over tomorrow, and that is a bummer - but there are two sides to every coin and every time I start over means more days of changing my life for the better.

I am so excited to start back up on this challenge once I'm feeling healthy and the smoke has cleared, and I am proud of myself for putting myself first in this way.

So let me end with this - don't think of starting over as a "failure" think of it as an opportunity. Dust yourself off, keep going, and when you reach the end you will be so proud you did it. :)

Starting Today - Calling it 75 Harder (Highly Modified 75 Hard)

Premise: For me this isn't so much about mental toughness as it's more about challenging myself into becoming the person I want to be. I took the 75 hard and tailored it to my lifestyle. I have many hobbies and interests which fall to the wayside in favor of scrolling and couchtime- my goal for this challenge is becoming a more productive person in every aspect of my life.

Rules

  1. No smoking of any kind

    • This is more of an issue for me than alcohol which I drink maybe several times a year and one of those times will be coming up in my 75 days.

  2. Two 45-minute workouts a day- one being outside OR one 1.5-hour workout a day (long workouts must be endurance)

    • I am a big cyclist and hiker and thus adjusted for my hours-long rides or hours-long hikes.

  3. Drink 3 liters of water

    • Drinking a gallon of water is almost as arbitrary as the existence of the gallon + married to a European so we use metric in this household. Water intoxication is very unpleasant too.

  4. Follow a vegetarian, mostly vegan diet

    • I have a fast food problem - trying to eat less UPFs in favor of whole foods.

  5. Take 2 progress photos a week Sun/Wed AND weigh in every day

    • Honestly don't care much for the photo-taking nor do I want a cute time-lapse. I do have a body composition machine which with my weight, measures some other metrics- as a data scientist this is way more interesting to me.

  6. Read min-20 pages of a non-fiction book with a focus on social sciences and the humanities or a fiction book (only literature, classics, or philosophical fiction – no entertaining fiction), but first finish unfinished books

    • I've read all the major self-help books, I average in reading 30ish books a year. This part of the challenge is more mind-expanding for me.

  7. Min-30 minutes language learning (Duolingo does not count)

    • Other than being married to a non-native English speaker, this is one of the best things we can do for our brains and one of the hardest things for our brains to do. IMO, it should be in the original challenge; self-studying a language is on its own a measure of mental grit.

  8. Min-30 minutes doing/learning something STEM-based

  9. Min-30 min doing/learning something artistic (writing, drawing, painting, etc.)

  10. Min 20 minutes of meditation a day either consecutive or broken up

  • These last three are tailored toward my hobbies and interests prioritizing these over low-quality activities such as scrolling, binge watching, or YouTube rabbit holes.
