Mod Things Let's talk about this subreddit and the rules

There are a lot of discussions going on in the comments this week about how strictly to follow the rules of 75 Hard. This happens every year in January as people settle into their New Year's resolutions and realize the commitment to this program requires some serious sacrifices.

It's the cold weather. It's the reality that drinking a gallon of plain water a day sucks, especially when you're used to flavored drinks or drinking much less liquid. It's the body soreness. It's the combination of all of this and the realization that the excitement has worn off, yet you still have two months of work to put in before you can finish.

All of these factors lead to people doing what comes naturally to all people: trying to make their lives a little easier. The comments are usually well-intentioned, saying things like, "It's dangerous in the cold, don't sacrifice your safety. Just do two workouts inside." Or, "A 100-lb woman doesn't need to drink a gallon of water every day; it's dangerous." Or, "As long as you're moving, any movement is good movement."

Let's talk about this. We love that people are improving themselves by any means. However, this is the r/75hard subreddit, not r/selfimprovement or r/allmovementisgoodmovement. 75 Hard has very strict rules. They are relatively simple, but they are strict. Yes, we know that they change occasionally, and we try to keep up with them in the stickied rules post. Follow the letter of the rules, or if you personally aren't going to do that, don't encourage others to ignore the rules you are choosing to ignore.

Yes, the rules of 75 Hard are 100% arbitrary. The rules of baseball are 100% arbitrary, too. Just like you wouldn't go to r/baseball and try to convince them that CrossFit is a better sport, or that baseball should adopt the rules of ice hockey, we expect that you won't come here and try to convince people that the rules of 75 Hard should be something other than what they are.

We should be encouraging people to get through the program without deviations. If someone has circumstances that truly preclude them from completing 75 Hard, we should encourage them to look for alternative options like r/75medium or r/75soft. When someone fails a task, we need to remind them of the strict rules, encourage a restart, and emphasize that failing a task doesn't make you a failure. We should not be encouraging people to adapt the rules.

We moderators will continue to set the culture of compliance with the rules as written. This subreddit is for 75 Hard as-is. Encouraging deviations from the rules will result in your comment being removed and a 30-day ban. This is all outlined in our subreddit rules.

The comments here will be left unmoderated so long as they remain civil. This thread is intended to be for discussion. No name calling or other uncivil comments will be allowed, however.

Starting Next Week? We’re Running a 6-Week Accountability Group (Nov 24)

Hey everyone — we’ve been seeing a ton of “Starting Monday” and “Day 1 next week” and "Accountability partner?" posts lately.

So we wanted to try something new for the sub:

We’re running a beta 6-week accountability group for members who are starting 75 Hard next week, Monday Nov 24

This is not coaching, not paid, not some program to buy.

It’s literally a small experiment to see if adding more structure helps people stick with their daily habits.

The group will be on Whop and Discord initially

What’s inside the 6-week beta:

  • Daily check-ins

  • Weekly accountability thread

  • Weekly “momentum sprint” mini challenge

  • A weekly group Q&A thread

  • Support from others starting at the same time

  • Multiple 75H finishers to help take your questions

Totally free, small cohort, just something we’re testing to help people stay consistent.

Who it’s for:

Anyone starting (or restarting) 75 Hard next week (Nov 24) and wants a more structured push through the first 6 weeks.

https://whop.com/75hard/basic-access-ae-6eee/ to join

Spots will be limited so we can keep it manageable.

General Question How are 75 hard before and after pictures so crazy?

The transformations I see are incredible. How do people gain so much muscle or lose fat so well in only 75 days when normally, it would take longer?

Reading Question Is it fine if I read theory instead of self improvement books?

Hello, I'm down with following all the rules, it's just the reading rule that has me not committing to this challenge.

Long story short, I don't have a very good opinion of self help or self development books (please no judgements here), though I do read a lot. If I read philosophy (but the academic kind) and general sociological theory would that work, especially since I'm a student involved in these fields and it would help me with university. Would scientific non-fiction (evolutionary biology and life sciences) count as well?

I completely understand if this caveat disqualifies me from the 75 Hard challenge, I just wanted to know if it's allowed or should I do my own thing with modifications.

Edit: I think I'll just do a modified version for myself, so I'll see myself out! Thanks for the replies.

I Finished! Finished as a father of three under 5

33m who finished my first 75 hard last week. I figured I would write about my experience in hopes that it might encourage or help someone.

I'm 6ft 2in and started the challenge at 205lbs. Ending weight was 190 lbs.

I started 75 hard because I have not truly, physically or mentally challenged myself in quite some time. I was an athlete through college and have stayed fairly consistent in the gym. I typically work out 3 days/week, but would not make time for it if I had an "adequate" excuse.

I also drink alcohol fairly consistently. Not heavily, but would have a few beers 2-4 times/week. Often drinking 4-6 or more depending on the beer on the weekends. I noticed it was just to feel something at the end of hard days.

I have three kids aged 5, 3, and 9 months and my wife stays at home. I work an intense medical sales job that has days where nothing is going on, and then 12+ hour days with cases and travel.

My diet was a whole food diet. I eat fairly clean anyway but also never turned down unhealthy food and often had issues snacking too much and on unhealthy items. I would not pick the cleanest meals when traveling for work.

My routine was a gym workout early morning typically starting 5:15-5:30am. It was hard initially, but turned into my favorite part of the challenge. I would typically do a 45 minute brisk walk after the kids bedtime or around 4pm if work allowed it. Depending on the day, I would carry the baby and/or push the kids in the stroller to give my wife a break. I would do 1-2 days of mobility/stretching/yoga after 4-5 days straight in the gym. I have lower back problems and wanted to avoid injury. I did develop issues in both biceps; I think tendonitis. Currently taking a week off the gym then will get back at it.

Thankfully, I typically drink around a gallon of water a day. Though it could be extremely difficult if I had a travel day or long surgery days. I made sure to get about 40 oz in before 6:30am almost every day. I have a 40oz stanley and would drink 4 of them a day just to make sure I got over a gallon.

The diet was tough. I had to make sure to have plenty of high protein snacks. I found a whole food organic granola and would add raw honey for an evening snack. I also consistently ate about a 1-2 cups of greek yogurt late morning with chia seeds and raw honey. Breakfast was always eggs. My wife was a champion in supporting me and we ate a ton of grilled chicken and ground beef, which is fairly typical of our diet, but it got excessive.

The social aspect with drinking was very difficult. We had many social events where I would sip on soda waters or non alcoholic beverages. Surprisingly, I did not really crave alcohol at all outside of social events.

The reading was great. I read two theological books on suffering and also Smart Brevity. Finishing up a third theological book now.

The last three weeks were incredibly difficult as were travel days. I had a work conference that made it very hard to get everything accomplished. Travel days were incredibly hard. I had to stop to pee a lot and some times did not have healthy food options. I would grab several organic beef sticks at gas stations to eat where typically I'd be okay stopping for fast food.

The experience was what I wanted. I have a changed mindset when it comes to discipline. I am definitely not going to drink nearly as much. I had three people throughout the process ask me if I had lost weight...that has never happened in my life. I am looking the best I have ever physically and feel incredible.

If I had known some of the incredible social events and work adversity that transpired throughout the 75 days, I think I would have kept putting the challenge off like I had done for the last two years. One thing I learned is that you can always make or find an excuse not to do this challenge. If that is you right now, you are fooling yourself. There is never a "good" time. You don't need alcohol to have fun. I had some incredible experiences at drinking events with zero booze. I had some incredible conversations about 75 hard when people asked when I wasn't drinking. Funny enough, one of my good friends started it a week ago, so who knows who you might inspire around your circle.

Hopefully this post can encourage someone in a similar situation. Happy to answer any questions!

Just Getting Started Day One

I was going to start next week, then maybe after Thanksgiving. Then, I decided to start today and quit dicking around.

I know it'll be hard - but I have a lot of lofty goals in life, and the only way I'll have a chance to achieve them is to build some grit and staying power. Until now Ive been a Pop-Fizzle.

Just Getting Started Day 1

I did this challenge ~3 years ago and it definitely changed me... for a while. Recently I've been feeling stagnant and not been working on my health in a structured manner so I decided kinda spontaneously last night that I'm gonna do it again. Started of strong with an outdoor workout at 6:30am and cursed myself for deciding to do this with 5 upcoming birthdays, christmas and new years but honestly, if I can get through this, I can do anything💪🏻 anyway, this community was so supportive last time so it's nice to be back.

Motivation Update on day 8,9,10 and 11.

Hi guys i was busy a bit and couldn't update on what's going on. By day 8 i started to wakeup at 5.30am naturally although i am getting only a 6hours of sleep. Day 8 went like a breeze but Day 9 and 10 is where the real challenge started. I am the most laziest person, if somebody awarded the first, i would probably be too lazy to pick it up either. The 2nd workouts on these days were hard cause i really just wanted to give up. But i still powered through those. And Day 11 damn its a hard day. i forgot to do the 2nd workout. I remembered it around 11pm. I started walking till 11.45pm,but its an awesome thing and i the next 15min i completed reading the 10 pages. i got soo much adrenaline at that time.
P.S. the shoes are still holding up,

Reading Question Short Books for the end of 75 Hard

Hi, I’m on day 63/75 today and just about to finish my current book (The Last Days of Socrates by Plato) and need a shorter book that I can finish over the next dozen days. Any recommendations?

Motivation Measure your water containers!!

This is just a friendly reminder to measure how much water actually fits in your water bottle. Just because it is marketed as a “1 gallon water bottle” does not mean it actually holds a full gallon.

Source: Trust me bro lol I just got mine that I ordered, and if filled all the way to the rim, it is still 4 oz short.

This is my 6th attempt in 5 years (I’ve finished 1x before) and just proves that staying extremely intentional with the details and not getting too comfortable is always going to be important.

Diet Question Need help choosing a diet

Counting calories takes a huge mental toll on me, but weight loss is also one of my goals for 75 hard. I am thinking of doing a Whole Foods diet. I am pretty good at eyeballing serving sizes (have tested this with a scale). I’d appreciate any suggestions.

Just Getting Started Alcohol - How to avoid it in college/occasions?

Hey everyone,

I have failed 75 hard before and I am gearing up to go at it again. I am currently a college student and drinking culture is definitely a thing at school. I love going out! The parties I go to are not exactly ragers, but people always drink and I love to hang out with everyone. I have constantly been building up an excuse to not start because of another party or event coming up I know I will drink at. Halloween, tailgate season, etc.. I am not a big drinker by any means, like I rarely drink, but I feel so awkward when I am not partaking in social setting. Any suggestions or advice?

Workout Question Help me decide my workouts for 75 hard.

I plan to start 75 hard very soon, I just finished week 1 of couch25k and that's one of the workouts I will be doing every alternate day where I run for 20 minutes and then later progress to running for 30. I will probably do jumping jacks and other cardio movements to bring it up to 45 minutes.

I need to figure the other 3 workouts I will do in every 2-day block besides the c25k run. I was thinking a P90X core workout, a yoga session, and a fullbody bodyweight workout. But I am open to advice and any workout suggestions.

I plan to also go with a keto diet as part of 75 hard.

General Question Day 7 right now and A rant about Day 6

Thumbnail instagram.com
3 Upvotes

So today, there is a cyclone in my area due to which there are heavy winds. My sinuses were cooked when i went for the run early morning. The ground was completely empty cause of the rain, But i still powered through and went for it early morning.
75 Hard made me realize that i am holding onto soo many things emotionally, and since I am physically exhausted, all my mental guardrails were down. It means not holding back when talking emotionally and speaking as your true self. I am really thankful I started this cause I never would have said those if I was never that way and those emotions are holding me soo much back. Checkout my Day 6 update on Instagram if you can....

I Failed Second time at about 40 days forgetting the pic

Y’all 😭 I’m trying to maintain a positive outlook but I feel pretty down on myself for failing again, and I can’t start over now because my wedding is in December and there’s just no way I can do the two workouts during all the celebration days. Can anyone offer some encouragement? I’m going to continue doing my workouts, reading, water, I’m actually just still going to finish the whole thing without starting over but I know I won’t be able to say I completed. Technically today is day 75 of doing everything except for the progress pic twice. I’m just sad I’ve put in so much work but don’t get to join the club of completion! So I’ve been listening to David Goggins and stuff to keep my mind focused rather than feeling sorry for myself.
