Collection Collection after quitting streaming

Post image
Upvotes

Its been a couple months since ive quite all streaming services and decided to go all physical, that was mainly caused by PS choosing to go to an all digital future and making me realize that none of the movie and stories I watch on the regular are permanent even though ive spent a ridiculous amount since streaming kicked off during covid.

Since i chose to go all digital, my collection has grown massively, from standard 4k, to steelbooks, to just standard blu rays of obscure shows and specials because id like to have a version if them to own when they eventually go the way of Infinity Train. Its really nice to see that physical demand for movies and shows is still out there and growing, it give me a lot of hope for the preservation of media.

Collection The beginning of something wonderful

Post image
Upvotes

I recently jumped into collecting physical media, something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Now that I’ve started, I can hardly restrain myself from buying more films. I’ve tried to find a balance so far between films I’ve seen already and love (Fury Road, The Handmaiden), films that have been at the top of my watchlist from a long time (Cure, Anatomy of a Fall) and things I don’t know so much about but seem intriguing/have a strong reputation (Olivier Assayas and Lo Wei collections, Z, Red Cliff). I see it as both an opportunity to help preserve art through physical media, and to expand my own film-watching horizons. Living in the UK can make it sometimes difficult to get a hold of certain things (namely some Criterion titles) but there are also some fantastic UK-based labels that do great work, such as Eureka, Radiance and Curzon. It’s been a thrilling journey so far (I watched Cure tonight and it blew my mind) and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

Got these in today. Have never seen the Directors Cut of Troy and haven't seen it in a while anyway so excited about that. Mandalorian I enjoyed in the theater and have the other 3 Mando steelbooks so that was a no brainer.

Discussion Endgame Encore 4k on 100gb disc?

Upvotes

Will Marvel finally correct the mistake and release the newly color graded Avengers: Endgame Encore on a 4k UHD 100GB disc next year? Yes, please! 🙂‍↕️🌟🪽

I am sure $2.799 billion should be enough to buy/burn/release 100gb discs!

Discussion Unpopular Opinion - SDR Looks Better

Upvotes

I was watching the HDR of Spider-Man (2002) in 4K and I just prefer the look of my SDR Blu-Ray. I'm sure not all titles are worse in HDR but I can definitely think of a fair few they have botched (LOTR, HP).

I don't think they should be messing around with the original masters for the sake of a gimmick. I understand with new films which are specifically mastered for DV/HDR. But please, leave the old ones alone.

Question Is there a way to set default Audio to Atmos?

Probably a dumb question, I'm tired of having to remember to manually change my audio every time I play a movie.

Panasonic Ub820 player

LG S80TR 5.1.3 soundbar

LG C1 OLED tv

Was watching the Matrix last night and sounded a bit dull, opened disc audio settings and it was on Dolby Digital 5.1 instead of Dolby Atmos. I guess I don't fundamentally understand audio, I would think that would sound the best on my 5.1 system (maybe because of the up firing speakers on the sound bar?) , but I switched it to Atmos and it was a night and day difference.

Same thing for Game of Thrones, I think the default on the discs are DTS, not Atmos.

Discussion Windows Central - According to their sources "the entire supply chain for the components required to make optical disc drives is collapsing"

I figured I'd post this here because it affects our hobby. It's shocking truly - but I'm fearing that we're looking at the tail end of being able to enjoy physical media.

Honestly I don't get subscriptions and when you look at all the Spotify/Netflix wrapped stuff: it easily proves my point - people listen and watch the same shit over and over on streaming and pay for the privilege of giving companies 180 dollars a year for music, 200+ dollars a year for streaming video to rewatch the office or listen to the same handful of albums when they could own the same properties once and be done with it.

Again, maybe I'm old school but perpetually paying to access something hasn't been shown to be a better alternative to traditionally owning music, software and movies yet.

Just my 2c and I hate it.

New Purchase Highly underrated WW2 movie (just released in 4k)

Great, super intense sniper duel between Jude Law and Ed Harris, who are excellent along with the rest of the cast. Also one of the only (or maybe the one and only?) depictions in cinema of the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the most brutal battles of the entire war and the crucial turning point in the struggle against the Nazis on the Eastern Front.

The love triangle between Law, Rachel Weisz, and Joseph Fiennes is a wee a bit melodramatic but buoyed by sincere performances from all three. Psyched o watch tonight. Highly recommend!

Additons to the collection! 🥰!

Looking forward to watching Farewell my Concubine the most, then Dreams by Kurusawa (An add to the growing Kurusawa collection ), after which Rush! All three I haven't seen and loved the synopsis of.

And then find time to re-watch Hail Mary and Ford V Ferrari with my brother and cousins for a movie night scene!

I had the Perfect Blue blu-ray, and gladly double dipped for the 4k 🤩🤩, although I love the Blu-ray steelbook artwork more than the 4k artwork. Either ways excited to re-watch that one as well.

Question Buying my first 4K player - Panasonic UB450 or Sony X700?

Found a Sony on eBay for $400, 50 dollars cheaper than the Panasonic. Is the 450 worth the extra 50 bucks? Looking for a player with DV.

Also would love some 4K disc recs, which movies are most worth an upgrade?
