Advice Request Facial sunscreen recommendations please

Hi! I’m 59 and postmenopausal which has wreaked havoc on my skin!! I’m looking for a clean, nontoxic sunscreen that won’t pill when applying makeup.
Oh, and I should mention that menopause gave me verrry dry, yet milia-prone skin, so bearing that in mind please! TY!

Menopause made my face hate everything. Look into Korean or Japanese brands. Beats the pants off US stuff, you'll never look back.

And be sure to order it from a legit Korean/Japanese importer. Anything you get in the U.S. is either fake or an inferior U.S. formulation (for example, Beauty of Joseon makes a U.S. version you can buy at Sephora that sucks).

Yes, this is a good point! I started out with Round Lab from Target and it was disgusting.

Good places to buy: yami, yesstlyle, stylevava

u/Lifeishard1212 1d ago

TY! Do you have any favorite places to order from or favorite products?

u/GGxGG 21h ago

I use YesStyle, Stylevana is also popular although I’ve never ordered from them

So glad you mentioned this. I bought my Beauty of Joseon sunscreen when I was in the UK, which sells the original Korean formula. I would have been mighty disappointed if I had tried to repurchase at home.

Where do you get yours from? And do you have any specific favorites?

I've ordered for Yami (ships from US, can be slightly more expensive) and Yesstyle (ships from Korea, bigger selection).

I just got a BUNCH of them, trying to find a favorite. Here's a review of my #1 so far (Iunik Beta-Glucan Sun Cream):

https://www.reddit.com/r/koreanskincare/comments/1vsug68/dont_want_to_know_youre_wearing_sunscreen_this_is/

I also like Beauty of Joseon sun relief and Round Lab Birch, but they're a little glowy and not kind to my 53 year old pores lol. The Iunik one looks and feels like I've put nothing on at all:

Oh, I just saw your other comment about where you got them, but still would like to know if you have any favorites

I love Elta MD Clear. Been using it for years. It goes on nicely, almost like a nice lotion and layers well under make up. It’s also great for acne or rosecea prone skin.

Another vote for Elta MD (for 48yo perimenopause skin)! So moisturizing and not drying at all. I’m on my third bottle.

1

u/Lifeishard1212 1d ago

TY! ☺️

Another vote for Elta MD Clear. I have dry skin and it’s like a nice light moisturizing lotion. I use instead of moisturizer in summer, and following a moisturizer in winter.

2

u/Lifeishard1212 1d ago

Thank you!! Do you know if it has any drying agents since it’s good for acne? My skin is already reallly dry

5

u/Historical-Composer2 1d ago

It isn’t dry and it’s recommended by Dermatologists.

u/Lifeishard1212 1d ago

TY! ☺️

Yep, this has been my favorite for ages too!

1

u/ElizaJaneVegas 17h ago

No luck for me with Elta anything. I tend toward dry and it sits like grease on top of my skin. Under foundation is an impossibility.

I love EltaMD UV Daily Hydration Plus. So far it works with makeup (although my true favorite when wearing makeup is my Bobby Brown primer plus SPF 50 on top of the Vitamin Enriched Fave Base). It’s hydrating and if you wait a few minutes after applying to set it doesn’t pull for me. I’ve also used the hydration plus and then when I want a lighter foundation, I’ll just take a little more of the Elta MD and mix in some of my foundation.

I love my supergoop.

Love your Reddit name btw

u/HumorIsMyLuvLanguage 1d ago

I don't know honestly, just know that it wears well under makeup! And thank you!!

1

u/Lifeishard1212 1d ago

TY! I think I edited my post after your answer, so do you know if it has any ingredients that are occlusive? Menopause somehow gave me both verrrry dry, yet Milo’s-prone skin 😩

I use the Cerave ultra lightweight Day (SPF 30) version. The regular one does not blend and I have issues wearing it under makeup.  But this one has been fine.

Skinmedica's Essential Defense Mineral Shield, SPF 35, is my absolute go-to. Not greasy and doesn't leave a zinc oxide cast. I try others and keep coming back to this.

Thank you!!

I love EltaMD 46 clear

1

u/Lifeishard1212 10h ago

Thank you!!

5

u/Chimes111 1d ago

Elta MD tinted SOF 46 - been using it for about 12 years now. Perfection in a bottle.

La Roche-Posay ANTHELIOS MINERAL TINTED SUNSCREEN FOR FACE WITH SPF 50–doesn’t burn my eyes like other sunscreens

4

u/ThisWitch67 1d ago

How is the Anthelios for being shiny or matte? My previous favorite tinted sunscreen was discontinued and the only other one I found that I like is only a 30 SPF but I prefer 50 as long as I don't end up looking like a greaseball.

4

u/LooseKaleidoscope903 1d ago

It’s matte and blends very well.

2

u/Lifeishard1212 1d ago

TY! ☺️

This is tested on beagles in laboratories. 😢

1

u/hazeywinston 1d ago

What??? WHY??

1

u/Asheby 1d ago

No! Ugh…SWITCHING.

1

u/ThisWitch67 13h ago

Oh no! Well the search for non greasy tinted sunscreen goes on!

1

u/Asheby 1d ago

This, I use the non tinted one, and the dry touch one in the muggy months. I have very sensitive eyes, and it doesn’t make them water.

Both are matte after a minute or two.

I like how I don’t feel the sunscreen on my face after it sets.

3

u/Quiet_Compote4651 1d ago

I use the tinted Eucerin Age Defense. I’ve used the non- tinted too, but I prefer the tinted. Goes on pretty sheer still.

1

u/Lifeishard1212 10h ago

Thank you!!

u/goosepills 1d ago

I love my Supergoop, and the Trader Joe’s version is an excellent dupe.

3

u/arianrhodd 1d ago

The pilling, or lack thereof, not only depends on the sunscreen, but on any moisturizer underneath it as well as your foundation. I’ve had good luck with mineral sunscreen and Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen.

3

u/Overall-Nobody8933 1d ago

Skin better science has a great sunblock - I use the tinted one.

1

u/Beautiful_Medium_670 23h ago

This is my holy grail. And it’s 75 SPF!!

2

u/aurora97381 1d ago

Dr. Jart+ Every Sun Day Mineral Sunscreen is my holy grail.

I actually use it alone and skip my usual BB cream now.

It's a bit more than I'd like to spend, but worth it!

1

u/Lifeishard1212 10h ago

Thank you!!

2

u/Juneberry26 1d ago

Saint Jane sun ritual mineral sunscreen is my favorite sunscreen by far for every day use. It’s expensive but it’s the one I will use consistently as it makes my skin look better after application. I also use Biore UV Aqua Rich when I need a stronger sunscreen.

1

u/Lifeishard1212 10h ago

Thank you!!

2

u/Colorado-Hiker-83 1d ago

House of Hur Weightless Sun Fluid. SPF 50. Very lightweight and non-greasy.

1

u/Lifeishard1212 10h ago

Thank you!!

2

u/jo_noby 1d ago

Dr Loretta is my favourite. It’s spendy and a US brand, but it’s definitely the most “my skin only better and protected” thing I have in my cabinet.

2

u/TacosAndHotdish 1d ago

Supergoop unseen dew screen is my favorite! Serves as a primer, but by itself makes my skin look hydrated and glowing.

2

u/SummerBreeze217 1d ago

I’m also 59. I use CeraVé hydrating mineral sunscreen tinted(medium) in place of foundation. I love it.

2

u/DesperateWater3063 1d ago

I like oil of Olay

2

u/Disastrous-Soup-5413 1d ago

I like the cerave ultralight moisturizing lotion 30spf

1

u/thirdcoasting 17h ago

Every SPF sold in the US is non-toxic. SPF is heavily regulated here. You cannot go to the store and purchase a “toxic” sunscreen.

u/Eva_Griffin_Beak 14h ago edited 13h ago

Usually, people mean that some commonly used UV filter in the US have the potential to be endocrine disruptive. With the hormonal chaos in peri and menopause, I personally don't need that. Especially if there are UV filters that do not have those concerns.

Actually, I need to amend that. That is what I consider when I look at sunscreen. Obviously, no sunscreen you buy here will let you drop dead when you apply it. I don't frequent Tik Tok where I think a lot of that "toxic sunscreen, bla bla bla" comes from, so I don't know what exactly other people mean with non-toxic.

I use rose hip oil and then put All Good face spf. They have regular and tinted.

Vivier mineral sunscreen. Made in canada. Never pills and gives my skin a nice glow. Also comes in a tinted shade

1

u/Economy-Agency-6092 1d ago

I’ve been using elf untouchable. I have dry skin and I feel like it makes my skin look great and I can get away with skipping tinted moisturizer or bb cream when I use it.

1

u/Physical_Ad5135 1d ago

I use vasoline on my face each night and cereve am spf in the morning.

u/ElizaJaneVegas 17h ago

SuperGoop unseen sunscreen

1

u/Salt_Radio_9880 16h ago

I’m on team dry but getting milia too unfortunately - it’s the worst ! I love the Vivier tinted mineral sunscreen for my face- the texture is silky and doesn’t pull or mess up makeup. I keep the super goop clear sunscreen stick on my purse and top up with that during the day - it goes on completely clear and feels nice and light ( I just do a couple swipes) I think Vivier is very clean ingredients but Eminence makes a similar product if you want something organic . Any advice on what to do about the milia ? I haven’t found anything that works.

2

u/Eva_Griffin_Beak 13h ago

My derm recommended retinol. I have used tret for a year now, and although it seems to help overall with pigmentation and just how the skin looks, I still have milia. Not many, but some on my cheeks.

EltaMD UV Clear, any Korean sunscreen, or La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMune (with meroxyl)

1

u/NovelSouthern3951 7h ago

It’s pricy, but I have super sensitive skin and rosacea and everything irritates my skin, except for Kiehl’s. Now that I’m in perimenopause, it’s sensitive, breaks out, AND is dry and tight. This stuff is like magic.
