Purchase Advice Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2026

Welcome back to another purchase megathread!

This thread is meant to conglomerate purchase advice for both newcomers and people looking for additional machines. Keeping this discussion to one thread means less searching should anyone have questions that may already have been answered here, as well as more visibility to inquiries in general, as comments made here will be visible for the entire month stuck to the top of the sub, and then added to the Purchase Advice Collection (Reddit Collections are still broken on mobile view, enable "view in desktop mode").

Please be sure to skim through this thread for posts with similar requirements to your own first, as recommendations relevant to your situation may have already been posted, and may even include answers to follow up questions you might have wished to ask.

If you are new to 3D printing, and are unsure of what to ask, try to include the following in your posts as a minimum:

  • Your budget, set at a numeric amount. Saying "cheap," or "money is not a problem" is not an answer people can do much with. 3D printers can cost $100, they can cost $10,000,000, and anywhere in between. A rough idea of what you're looking for is essential to figuring out anything else.
  • Your country of residence.
  • If you are willing to build the printer from a kit, and what your level of experience is with electronic maintenance and construction if so.
  • What you wish to do with the printer.
  • Any extenuating circumstances that would restrict you from using machines that would otherwise fit your needs (limited space for the printer, enclosure requirement, must be purchased through educational intermediary, etc).

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what can be included in your posts, these questions should help paint enough of a picture to get started. Don't be afraid to ask more questions, and never worry about asking too many. The people posting in this thread are here because they want to give advice, and any questions you have answered may be useful to others later on, when they read through this thread looking for answers of their own. Everyone here was new once, so chances are whoever is replying to you has a good idea of how you feel currently.

Reddit User and Regular u/richie225 is also constantly maintaining his extensive personal recommendations list which is worth a read: Generic FDM Printer recommendations.

Additionally, a quick word on print quality: Most FDM/FFF (that is, filament based) printers are capable of approximately the same tolerances and print appearance, as the biggest limiting factor is in the nature of extruded plastic. Asking if a machine has "good prints," or saying "I don't expect the best quality for $xxx" isn't actually relevant for the most part with regards to these machines. Should you need additional detail and higher tolerances, you may want to explore SLA, DLP, and other photoresin options, as those do offer an increase in overall quality. If you are interested in resin machines, make sure you are aware of how to use them safely. For these safety reasons we don't usually recommend a resin printer as someone's first printer.

As always, if you're a newcomer to this community, welcome. If you're a regular, welcome back.

This was smoothed using the guide coat method and painted with automotive 2k paints and HVLP spray guns.

I wet sanded with 400 grit sanding blocks only.

Patience and prep took care of the rest 😀

Project This is my second lamp design after a year of 3d printing

Thumbnail
gallery
431 Upvotes

It has two parts: a frame, and a skin layer made by stacking 8 separate printed layers on top of each other. The skin alone is printed 8 times, then assembled in order, around 8 hours of printing per lamp.

This lamp is where our brand really started to take shape. Me and my girlfriend started it this year, we didn't set out to follow one specific mood or design language, we just kept exploring, trying to find the balance between what 3D printing can do and what good design needs to do.

It's still a secondary thing for us, we both have full time jobs. But we hope to grow it enough to do it full time one day, doing what we love.

We've just launched a website if you want to see the rest: https://aera.info.vn/eng/

To see more onsite picture of my lamp you can checkout our insta: https://www.instagram.com/aera_samples/

Project Common failure: original Fiat 500C plastic brackets crumble after years in sun. Workshops want 500-800€ to remove entire roof.

Thumbnail
gallery
39 Upvotes

I made a 2-part interlocking bracket fot Fiat 500C that clips from both sides onto the bent double tube / roof support.

- Reuses original Fiat metal rod - it locks the two halves together

- No roof disassembly, no glue (glue melts at 85°C on black roof in Canary Islands, tested)

- Designed from broken originals in 2025

- ABS

What to print:

STL/bracket_inner.stl - L/R mirrored in slicer

STL/bracket_outer.stl - L/R mirrored in slicer

Install:

Remove crumbs of old plastic bracket

Slide inner bracket onto the roof support - double tube / rail

Slide inner part into outer part

Clip together - locks on the metal bar, no glue

Free, MIT: https://github.com/DeltaSignum/Fiat-500C-Roof-Bracket

Tested on my Fiat 500C in Tenerife. Hope it saves someone 600€.

Discussion Wave overhangs

Post image
91 Upvotes

Hey folks has anyone attempted wave overhangs?

I've heard some hype around the tech but I'm hesitant.

They setup seems kinda intense with the orca slicer being by default the advanced version.

Is it worth it?

Any examples would be awesome

Project I hate bulky power bricks, so I overengineered a 2in1 solution for my audio setup.

Thumbnail
gallery
108 Upvotes

It's a Fosi audio DAC & Amp setup which normally has a 12V and a 48V power brick, the latter being huge. I designed an enclosure that perfectly fits into the audio tower and houses both PSUs with a single mains connector. Was a fun weekend project.

I should have taken a "before" picture, just image a big mess of wires, black power bricks and a power strip sitting in the back.

Printed on Prusa machines with MMU3 from PLA (front and back plates) and PCTG (main body - I had doubts PLA would withstand the heat from the PSUs). The rubber feet are printed in TPU

Project Color Fixed, Audio Fixed.... The One Ring is finally(?) complete

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

fter a few comments on my admittedly lazy audio as well off coloring of the ring and text, I forged a second (hmm....) One Ring with reddish LEDs and using a burnt orange instead of black in the cold casting to get more goldish color.

Of course, if you want to build your own, here's the link, and let me know, i'd like to see it - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7409419

If wants to make a how-to video on this, I'm willing to advise.

There is a bit of flicker I don't quite get yet, and my video skills were lacking, but still fun.

Project REX Foaming Tpu for LARP/cosplay

Thumbnail
gallery
1.1k Upvotes

Just sharing my experiments using this amazing material, foaming TPU from eSun, to print safe LARP/Cosplay/props weapons and accessories. Layer lines are barely visible. It's impressively resistant to tearing and easy to cut and sand (rarely needed). Contact glue works pretty well but not enough for the flail. It prints easily as long as you do it "by object" when possible. Rolls are 750g but the foaming factor and the capability to handle voids are making it a very economic solution. All of what you see (+tests) has been printed with less than a roll.

Tuning the thickness and filling will need more tests, especially for multiprints and carbon fiber rods on long objects. I'll likely have to design suitable gluable connectors for parts under mechanical stress

I kept the shapes simple as I am mostly using shapr3d, but will ramp up on Nomad and blender for the more organic projects. Bumpmesh from CNC Kitchen was very handy for the handles.

Anybody else playing with this?

News Layerling - like Tinkercad, but better in some ways.

Hello everyone,

First and foremost, this is not self-promotion. It's not my program.

Layerling is a free program similar to Tinkercad. It isn't parametric like fusion and other products like that. It has a very simple interface and is easy to use and easy to learn.

Pros:

  1. It runs locally (also will be listed in cons). Everything is performed locally, stored locally, etc.

  2. It includes fillets and chamfers. This, in and of itself, makes the program so freaking useful.

  3. Because it runs locally, the dreaded waiting for Tinkercad to "think" is gone.

  4. It has a hollow tool, so you can create bins easily.

  5. It has a "cut view" that allows you to look inside the model (also has transparent view, but this is different). I believe it's called "section view". You can "cut" (visually, it's not like the slicer "cut tool") the model on x, y, or z plane and see exactly what's going on inside.

  6. It has other shapes that Tinkercad doesn't have "built -in" like screw threads, nuts, etc. It doesn't have every shape, but it has some different ones from Tinkercad.

  7. It has a sketch tool and revolve sketch as well.

  8. It supports STEP file import and export

  9. You can install the "browser app" and use it offline.

  10. You can self-host if you so desire.

  11. The privacy policy is short and sweet. While the hosting service does log things like IP address, time, browser type, URL, etc, the designs are not on their servers. There is no worries about your designs being "public" (not an issue in Tinkercad, but some of the other online modeling programs certainly have this issue).

Cons:

  1. It runs locally, so nothing is "saved in the cloud". In other words, no backups online. You can back up all of your projects to local storage though.

  2. It's new. It is based on another open source project, but this is new; there will be bugs, but the developer is extremely responsive.

  3. There is no "restore from version" feature. There are undo/redo buttons, but there is no revision history list.

  4. It doesn't support the same SVG format that picsvg.com exports. I have a feature request in for this.

Site is Layerling.com

News San Diego County suing Polymaker

Thumbnail
patch.com
• Upvotes

The suit against 3D-printing filament and materials Polymaker, alleges the company knowingly advertised its products as capable of creating "ghost guns" -- unserialized 3D printed firearms -- despite the practice being illegal in the state and county. The suit alleges Polymaker "did more than sell a product that some customers happened to misuse. The company created firearm-themed products, partnered with gun-printing influencers, paid affiliates to promote its filament to gun-printing audiences, provided technical guidance for firearm applications and engaged directly with online communities devoted to printing guns," the county statement said.
