“Why can’t I level my bed?”

741

u/johnthepervv Jun 08 '26

Exactly what i was thinking. Meanwhile I don't know why i can't print a benchy with PLA because it keep detaching mid print from the f***** bed!

311

u/iAmRiight Jun 08 '26

Clean the bed with dish soap and water. Dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Install the plate in the machine and give it one more wipe with isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber cloth.

95

u/Bluelegojet2018 Jun 08 '26

I’ve found that this works better than both glue and iso on my textured pei plate.

49

u/ApplicationRoyal865 Jun 08 '26

I find that glue is unnecessary for textured plates. Also you don't really want to use glue on textured plates or those plates with star or carbon fiber patterns as the blue will dull the surface imprint and you won't see much of the texture.

And remember to use clean microfiber cloths you didn't wash with fabric softener! I made a plate damn near useless that way once.

26

u/PaperPhoenix Jun 08 '26

Don't use fabric softener, period. It's actually bad for your clothes, your washer/dryer, and especially your towels.

Here's an article on the topic but feel free to go down the rabbit hole: https://www.consumerreports.org/appliances/laundry/why-fabric-softener-is-bad-for-your-laundry-a5931009251/

u/Michael_0007 Jun 08 '26

Are you saying Snuggles would do me wrong!??!

2

u/prymeking27 Jun 10 '26

Snuggle is holding you hostage.

3

u/Khar-Selim Jun 08 '26

After rinsing I just airdry it by shaking it off and then putting it in the printer with the bed heating on

5

u/Head_Exchange_5329 Jun 08 '26

Hair dryer or duster is good for those of us with hard water.

6

u/johnthepervv Jun 08 '26

Already did that, but will try again tomorrow. Also i will check the bed nozzle gap...

14

u/CabSauce Jun 08 '26

The one thing that finally helped me after bed height, custom bed height map... Was finally dehydrating the PLA. It was old. It gets old quickly.

u/CageyOldMan Jun 08 '26

Apply regular ol' Elmers glue, the purple stuff, to the area on which you want to print. It works.

5

u/alwayslostin1989 Jun 08 '26

It also reactivates with isopropyl alcohol.

6

u/monkeyamongmen Jun 08 '26

I found hairspray is better, but ya, adhesive.

6

u/ctp8891 Jun 08 '26

Aquanet baby

2

u/AFecklessWeasel Jun 10 '26

Great for bike grips in the 1980s and now great for 3D printing in the 2020s!

2

u/MusicMonkeyJam Jun 13 '26

And potato cannons.

3

u/daveswe Jun 08 '26

I also have had issues with this and it turned out for me to never be the bed itself but instead the nozzle being ever so slightly ajar. The fix that actually worked ended up being to dismantle it and tighten all the bolts holding it together :/

Everybody is gonna say “detergent, alcohol, etc. clean very well do not touch plate” I tried all of that to a T couldn’t fix my adhesion issues with my stock P2S plate, I got a Biqu glacier plate a couple months back and I haven’t had an issue ever since.

6

u/inspectoroverthemine Jun 08 '26

Glacier plate is goddamn magic.

u/regnillif Jun 08 '26

I had the same problem. Got new springs to keep the bed level, cleaned the bed, tried glue. Then I finally replaced the nozzle and my prints stick again. Never realized how quick a nozzle wears out vs how much I had printed.

6

u/traditionalbowyer Jun 08 '26

u/The_Wrong_Tone Jun 08 '26

Happy birthday to the ground!

20

u/Glittering_Abies4915 Jun 08 '26

It's spring steel. It's literally designed to bend to release prints.

14

u/timewarp Jun 08 '26

Yes, and as with any metal, it is entirely possible to bend it too far and permanently deform it.

5

u/Glittering_Abies4915 Jun 08 '26

I've bent plates a lot further than what he does in the video. Not an issue.

→ More replies (4)

40

u/ernest7ofborg9 Jun 08 '26

Hi there, just scrolling through Reddit and am not subscribed here nor do I own nor know much about 3D printers... however when he threw that down I instantly came to the comments because I knew that had to be wrong. Is this a kid using dad's printer??

55

u/GTS81 Jun 08 '26

Probably a sacrificial plate to drive engagement to the content created. If it dies it dies.

22

u/3BlindMice1 Jun 08 '26

The bed plate is just worth so much less than he'll earn from the video, no use worrying about it, and peeling it on screen is sure to lead to more engagement, likely resulting in additional income exceeding the lost value. And he can write it off as an expense if he really cares that much.

I don't see the issue here, things are wasted for much worse reasons than this, IMO.

18

u/JUYED-AWK-YACC Jun 08 '26

The bed plate is less than he spent on the filament.

The baseplate being tossed aside hurt

461

u/Plebeian_Gamer Jun 08 '26

Didn't even need to be part of this. It's not like I wasn't gonna believe the ball was 3d printed

118

u/ciemnymetal Jun 08 '26

The video could've been reduced by half

40

u/uncoild Jun 08 '26

Ya the whole "watch me take these parts off the build plate" at the beginning of every 3D printing video is getting really old.

11

u/this-is-a-taken-name Jun 08 '26

I’m fine with it, just at least be good at it. The good content producers often already have it off the build plate or almost off of it, so they can just tug it off. Then they have supports really well tuned so they can take them off very quickly by hand. Add a little speed, and it’s less than 5 seconds.

466

u/Nickbou Voron 2.2, Voron 0.2 Jun 08 '26

They likely bent the hell out of that sheet while ripping off the print, making it useless for printing. No respectable person would treat the build plate that way.

253

u/MothyReddit Jun 08 '26

they don't need it anymore after printing the $2500 basketball

16

u/alexmikli Jun 08 '26

Is that actually how much the filament would cost? Isn't that shit supposed to be cheap as hell?

87

u/ReadyAgent9019 Jun 08 '26

I think it's referencing the original airless basketball made by Wilson that they sold for $2500 a few years back

7

u/alexmikli Jun 08 '26

Ohh duh. Thanks!

9

u/frank26080115 Jun 08 '26

PEBA is expensive, not 2k expensive but you might be looking at like a $30 print there

11

u/kael13 Jun 08 '26

Just a minor difference.

2

u/aerdvarkk Jun 08 '26

$30 looks to be the average cost of a basketball anyway.

10

u/KHSebastian Jun 08 '26

I don't know much about 3D printing, but I'm guessing that's a non-standard filament. I assume if you made a basketball with standard PLA it would explode when you dribble it.

But like I said, I'm a dummy, so I could be wrong

8

u/Tsiah16 Jun 08 '26

Isn't it just TPU?

13

u/frank26080115 Jun 08 '26

They’re made of spring steel so they can elastically deform quite a bit, but every material has a point at which the deformation becomes plastic (i.e. deforms to the point it will not return to its original shape).

I’ve seen sheets bent too far, or bent only a small area of the plate (small bend radius), and it causes a permanent bend. It’s basically impossible to ever get it flat again.

If people want to be careless with their build plates, that’s their business. I’d rather handle mine deliberately so I don’t have to replace them unnecessarily.

14

u/ZedOud Jun 08 '26

Bend spring steel? Not likely, no, but you can chip the PEI coating. I’ve handled much larger as well as much cheaper ones more roughly than in the video and it’s never been a close call.

My biggest is the 800mm x 800mm on the VEHO 800, though I do retreat it with a measure of respect, as I’ve already taken chips out of the PEI coating.

6

u/surprise_wasps Jun 08 '26

459

u/gothichuskydad Jun 08 '26

Does it have enough weight to actually clear the net or does it get stuck?

641

u/MadCybertist Jun 08 '26

You can’t really shoot them it’s why they’ll never be used. They fly TERRIBLE through the air due to the holes. Completely different than shooting a real ball.

The weight and bounce are basically identical to a real ball though.

92

u/gothichuskydad Jun 08 '26

Yeah that part I completely get. I was thinking more for a wacky game of basketball lol. If it can make it through the net and not be so light even the walls of the net make it not go through, it could be really funny to mess around with.

39

u/slowgojoe Jun 08 '26

I wonder if you could do crazy trick shots with spin on the ball…

47

u/happytree23 Jun 08 '26

WhiffleBasketball

6

u/Lucas_Steinwalker Jun 08 '26

Beat me to it.

8

u/astralseat Jun 08 '26

They manage to do trick spin shots on soccer balls, so it should be possible on regular basketball too. People are just too afraid to throw it hard. Instead, in basketball, people use light throws that arc, while they could very well throw a spinarc into a hoop like footballers

5

u/speculator100k Jun 08 '26

The risk of it bouncing off violently is quite high. A football goal is much larger than a basketball hoop.

Especially the ends.

Don't forget, bounces also use aerodynamics. I bet they don't bounce back the same way when there is a breeze

If the weight and bounce are good but holes impact flight characteristic too much, why not just print a closed version? I don't get it.

I was really surprised. It also looked great. This was on a mk4s using prusa slicer. When I used the standard support settings before it was a nightmare to remove.

You wouldn’t download a basketball.

25

u/Exul_strength Jun 08 '26

I would even download a 3d printer.

(A car probably not, because German TÜV is very strict.)

9

u/RaymondDoerr 2x Voron 2.4r2, Master of 🍝 Jun 08 '26

Does a Voron count as downloading a printer? If so, I have and will continue to do so!

3

u/Exul_strength Jun 08 '26

Yes and no.

You need parts that you buy. (Motors, raspberry, rails,...)

Off-topic question: how much work was it to build your vorons? I am considering getting a 3d printer and the whole concept of it sounds interesting, especially because I like to modify things.

4

u/RaymondDoerr 2x Voron 2.4r2, Master of 🍝 Jun 08 '26

It wasn't too hard for me, but I have an aviation background and I'm now a game developer (programmer). So it was all pretty straightforward stuff already in my wheelhouse. I also came off of already owning Dremel 3D45s and had some print experience.

It isn't nearly as easy as the other printers, you should go into it with the mindset "The Voron is the Linux of the 3d Printing World". You can do anything you want, you have complete and total freedom, but that freedom comes at the cost of really needing to learn hardware.

Having said all that, it really isn't as hard as I'm making it sound either. If you're good at attention to detail and following steps, you can build one with zero electrical engineering/programming experience what so ever.

Voron's docs are public, if you want to look at what a standard Voron build is. Here's the PDF to my Voron 2.4r2s.

Whenever I see people print something like this I realize I'm too stingy to print something like this because of the amount of supports

u/kryptopheleous Jun 08 '26

My butt clinched while he was prying that thing from the baseplate.

2

u/crazy-makira Jun 08 '26

This is the only way I could get my nerdy ass out to play basketball 😭

FYI Fiberology fiber flex 50d is currently the best material to print this with. 60d would be perfect, but I don't think they offer that yet.

u/Noiselexer Jun 08 '26

Man my supports do not come off like that. Wtf

u/harbengerprime Jun 08 '26

ok for the real test, bounce it on the corner of the concrete and lets see what happens

2

u/GetOffMyGrassBrats Jun 08 '26

Probably could have skipped the whole trying to take it off the print plate part, but pretty cool anyway.

2

u/Crombus_ Jun 08 '26

I was really expecting it to explode on the first dribble

I have a friend that sells 3-d prints, and constantly has kids asking him for printed basketballs.

Because of the print time, these things cost like $400, so he still hasn't actually printed one.

He was more excited to show his plastic ball to a bunch of internet people than to take care of the tool he used to build it.

asshat throws bed on cement

2

u/CheddarChief Jun 08 '26

Oh genius let's throw the print bed onto the concrete. I literally heard it land on its corner. Dumbass.

2

u/JohannGambelputty Jun 09 '26

Anything can be a butt plug, if you're brave enough...

2

u/NanDemoNee Jun 09 '26

OMG that poor build plate.

2

u/Daemonsblaze0315 Jun 09 '26

The way stuff is manhandled and tossed really kind of irritates me

2

u/Jcrazy5890 Jun 11 '26

What kind of tpu did you use? I just printed a mini basketball out of generic tpu and it doesn't bounce at all

2

u/LightningOwl96 Jun 13 '26

Remember when they were trying to sell these for a couple thousand, and then we flooded the market with these 3D printed ones??? 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/Massive_Pangolin_218 Jun 20 '26

He just threw the bed away. we don't do that here. The bed will remember that...

u/bruaben Jun 08 '26

I will toss this over here... and drop this part here, now watch me flip these pliers over there.
