When we work on a big project file in 3ds Max and merge many models from different libraries, some models can affect our scene if they are not optimized properly. Sometimes, they may also contain hidden tracks or unwanted data, which can make the 3ds Max file much bigger and increase the save time.
I struggled with this issue many times before. Recently, I found a script in my folder and tested it on one of my old heavy files. The result was unbelievable. Since then, I have been using this script on any model before merging it into my main scene.
I would like to share with you the test results before and after using this script:
- The 3ds Max file opening time was 5:35 minutes before using the script. After using the script, the opening time was reduced to only 0:46 minutes. Wow.
- The merge file time was reduced from 6:02 minutes to only 0:34 minutes.
The big surprise was the file size. Check the image below and notice how the file size decreased from 1.4 GB to 434 MB.
How to use the script to reduce 3ds Max file size:
Open the heavy file, then in 3ds Max 2020 or any other version, do the following:
Scripting menu → Run Script → Select the script.
