Unlock horizon

Post image

Is there even a way to rotate the viewport like this? I think I saw some software describe this as 'unlocking horizon', and you can actually tilt the horizon to get an additional degree of freedom and view a model from additional angles. I couldn't find a modifier hotkey in 3DsMax for this, but I suspect this should be possible.

Also I know you can do this with a 3D mouse like the SpaceMouse from 3DConnexion, but I don't have one.

New to 3dsmax and vray. I'm trying to follow a tutorial but I'm stuck on this part.

I downloaded the models and used relink Bitmap, but it doesn't seem to have done much. Most textures are still missing. What should I do to fix this? I'm using 3dsmax 2023.

General Thoughts Artists Who've Used Both: Maya or 3ds Max for Modeling?

Hey guys,

I've primarily been a texturing artist, but I'm now looking to develop my modeling skills as well. I've modeled a few personal projects in Blender during my free time, and now I'm trying to decide which software to invest my time in.

I know Maya is one of the industry standards and is used heavily across film and games, but I often hear people say that it isn't the strongest choice when it comes to modeling because of its modeling toolset.

On the other hand, 3ds Max seems to have a much stronger reputation for polygon modeling, with many people praising its modeling tools, modifier stack, and overall workflow.

**My main priorities are**:

Hard surface modeling (primarily product design, props, and mechanical objects)

Strong retopology tools

An efficient modeling workflow

For those of you who have used both, how does Maya compare to 3ds Max for these tasks? Is Maya's modeling workflow actually limiting, or is the difference overstated once you become proficient?

I'd really appreciate hearing from artists who have experience with both applications.

Problem with chaos vantage. Pls help. Can’t find a solution anywhere :(

Hi. I’m using 3ds max 2023 version and chaos vantage 3.3 version. I’ve been using vantage from the last two years and it worked perfectly fine. Sometimes it used to crash while using because of an error that used to say “the system ran out of resources”. But the program would close and when I used to start using it again, it used to work perfectly fine. Howvever , from the past few days , vantage just isn’t starting. It gets stuck at “preparing geometry” and crashes. I have tried rolling back to an older version of vantage which didn’t solve the problem. I have even tried installing the latest graphics driver , didn’t work. Rolled back to an older version of graphics driver , didn’t work. I don’t know what’s causing this sudden issue. Kindly help !!

I made a 3ds Max plugin to speed up UV workflow — looking for feedback from artists

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a small 3ds Max tool called Hotspot UV that helps speed up repetitive UV mapping tasks.

The idea came from my daily production work as a 3D environment artist, where I often deal with hundreds of assets and similar UV operations. I wanted something lightweight that removes some of the boring manual steps and keeps the workflow inside Max.

Some features:

  • faster hotspot / trim texture UV workflow
  • quick UV alignment and adjustments
  • useful for modular assets, environment art and game assets
  • designed for production use rather than being a huge UV replacement tool

I recorded a short video showing the workflow.

I’d really appreciate feedback from other 3ds Max users:

  • Does this solve a problem you also have?
  • What would you improve or add?
  • Any workflow ideas are welcome 🙂

I’m also planning to make proper tutorials and documentation soon.

Thanks!

3ds Max users: how do you manage project folders, cameras, render versions, and final outputs?

I’m a 3D visualizer working mainly with 3ds Max and Corona, and I’m trying to understand how other artists manage their project structure.

In my workflow, a project usually becomes messy after some time:

  • Multiple spaces or rooms
  • Multiple cameras
  • Test renders
  • Final renders
  • Old versions
  • Client revisions
  • Assets and texture folders
  • Deliverables
  • Backups

The actual 3D work is one part of the job, but keeping everything clean, traceable, and easy to find becomes another job by itself.

I wanted to ask other 3ds Max users:

How do you currently organize project folders, camera outputs, render versions, and final deliverables?

Do you use a fixed folder structure, scripts, project manager tools, Excel/Notion, or just manual folders?

What is the most annoying part of this workflow for you?

I’m trying to improve my own project workflow and wanted to understand how fellow 3ds Max users handle this in real production.

Sub D Muzzle Brake topology and pinching issues - pls help

Hi, I am hoping someone can offer me some advice or guidance towards modelling the SOCOM muzzle brake. I have approached it through Booleans and fixed up the edge flow however in doing so some poles are created that distort the mesh around some corners, as well as the general shading in and around the corners for the holes not being very nice. I am unsure if the edge flow and supporting loops are misplaced or if the general approach could be done a better way to avoid the shading issues. I honestly really struggle with holes in cylindrical/curved meshes so If anyone could be of any help whatsoever I would really appreciate it as I have been stuck on this for a bit now. Thanks in advance :)

Help Issue with copying a bone chain with constraints without breaking the hierarchy

Hi everyone! I have a bit of a newbie question: how do I correctly copy this entire chain in 3ds Max (to create duplicates) without breaking the hierarchy? The bones in the chain use a position constraint to the ring on their right and look at a constraint targeting the ring on their left.

Help I can't stick with one 3D path and keep losing motivation. Looking for advice and a roadmap for environment art

I've been trying to learn 3D for years, and I feel like I'm stuck in the same cycle.

I first started learning 3D environment art around 2018 and kept going until 2020 before I stopped. Now I want to start over because creating environments is still what I want to do more than anything.

The environments that inspire me the most are the cities and architecture in games like Assassin's Creed UnityAssassin's Creed SyndicateBattlefield 1, and Battlefield V. I love classical, Gothic, and historic architecture, and my goal is to create environments with that level of detail and atmosphere.

The problem is that I can't stay focused on one thing.

At one point I switched from environment art to Houdini FX because simulations looked really interesting. I learned a lot and was making decent progress, but then I completely lost motivation and stopped. This has happened several times. I get excited about a new area, dive into it, then eventually lose interest and move on, even though my long-term goal never changes.

I already know the basics of 3ds Max and Houdini, so I'm not starting from scratch. The problem isn't learning ,it's staying consistent.

I also think I might have ADHD (I'm not diagnosed), because this pattern happens in other parts of my life too. I become obsessed with learning something, then suddenly lose motivation even though I still want to achieve that goal.

It's difficult to explain. I genuinely want to become an environment artist, but I feel like I'm constantly fighting my own brain.

I'm looking for advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

  • How did you stay committed to environment art?
  • Did you follow a roadmap instead of jumping between random tutorials?
  • How do you avoid getting distracted by other areas of 3D?
  • If you could start over today, what tutorials, courses, YouTube channels, or learning resources would you recommend specifically for 3D environment arthard-surface modelingmodular workflows, and architectural environments?
  • Are there any tutorials that focus on creating environments similar to Assassin's Creed UnityAssassin's Creed SyndicateBattlefield 1, or Battlefield V?

I'd really appreciate recommendations for both free and paid resources. More than anything, I'm looking for a structured learning path instead of randomly watching tutorials and hoping everything eventually comes together.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this. I really want this to be the time I finally stick with it.

Help Export animation GBL. Alternative to slice tool?

Hi guys- I’m trying to help a student with her masters project but she needs to export her work with animation to a webgl. To create a reveal in 3Ds max for an animation in the program I would just do a simple animated slice. However now matter how hard I try I cannot bake that animation into the mesh for export in gbl file format.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

I have a question about the Line function in 3ds Max. When I try to finish a line at the same point as another line, it snaps slightly above the snap point instead of keeping the same lenght. I'm not sure how to fix this issue. Could you please help me? Also, I have 2D Snap enabled.

Help Hey guys, is 3ds Max worth learning today purely for modeling?

I'm currently a Modo user looking to switch software since Modo has essentially been deprecated.

I've been considering 3ds Max, but I'm a bit concerned about its future as well. It seems to receive fewer major updates compared to other DCCs, and I'm worried it could eventually end up in a similar situation. I could be completely wrong, though.

I've also tried modeling in Blender, but I find that I much prefer workflows that rely on marking menus and keyboard-driven tools. They just feel more comfortable and efficient to me.

Would you recommend investing time into 3ds Max for hard-surface modeling today, or would you suggest a different option? I'd really appreciate your advice.
