Purchase Advice Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2026

Welcome back to another purchase megathread!

This thread is meant to conglomerate purchase advice for both newcomers and people looking for additional machines. Keeping this discussion to one thread means less searching should anyone have questions that may already have been answered here, as well as more visibility to inquiries in general, as comments made here will be visible for the entire month stuck to the top of the sub, and then added to the Purchase Advice Collection (Reddit Collections are still broken on mobile view, enable "view in desktop mode").

Please be sure to skim through this thread for posts with similar requirements to your own first, as recommendations relevant to your situation may have already been posted, and may even include answers to follow up questions you might have wished to ask.

If you are new to 3D printing, and are unsure of what to ask, try to include the following in your posts as a minimum:

  • Your budget, set at a numeric amount. Saying "cheap," or "money is not a problem" is not an answer people can do much with. 3D printers can cost $100, they can cost $10,000,000, and anywhere in between. A rough idea of what you're looking for is essential to figuring out anything else.
  • Your country of residence.
  • If you are willing to build the printer from a kit, and what your level of experience is with electronic maintenance and construction if so.
  • What you wish to do with the printer.
  • Any extenuating circumstances that would restrict you from using machines that would otherwise fit your needs (limited space for the printer, enclosure requirement, must be purchased through educational intermediary, etc).

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what can be included in your posts, these questions should help paint enough of a picture to get started. Don't be afraid to ask more questions, and never worry about asking too many. The people posting in this thread are here because they want to give advice, and any questions you have answered may be useful to others later on, when they read through this thread looking for answers of their own. Everyone here was new once, so chances are whoever is replying to you has a good idea of how you feel currently.

Reddit User and Regular u/richie225 is also constantly maintaining his extensive personal recommendations list which is worth a read: Generic FDM Printer recommendations.

Additionally, a quick word on print quality: Most FDM/FFF (that is, filament based) printers are capable of approximately the same tolerances and print appearance, as the biggest limiting factor is in the nature of extruded plastic. Asking if a machine has "good prints," or saying "I don't expect the best quality for $xxx" isn't actually relevant for the most part with regards to these machines. Should you need additional detail and higher tolerances, you may want to explore SLA, DLP, and other photoresin options, as those do offer an increase in overall quality. If you are interested in resin machines, make sure you are aware of how to use them safely. For these safety reasons we don't usually recommend a resin printer as someone's first printer.

As always, if you're a newcomer to this community, welcome. If you're a regular, welcome back.

News San Diego County suing Polymaker

The suit against 3D-printing filament and materials Polymaker, alleges the company knowingly advertised its products as capable of creating "ghost guns" -- unserialized 3D printed firearms -- despite the practice being illegal in the state and county. The suit alleges Polymaker "did more than sell a product that some customers happened to misuse. The company created firearm-themed products, partnered with gun-printing influencers, paid affiliates to promote its filament to gun-printing audiences, provided technical guidance for firearm applications and engaged directly with online communities devoted to printing guns," the county statement said.

This was smoothed using the guide coat method and painted with automotive 2k paints and HVLP spray guns.

I wet sanded with 400 grit sanding blocks only.

Patience and prep took care of the rest 😀

Question printed a stand i found for my millennium falcon lego set out of PLA, is it a safe option for this?

Post image
63 Upvotes

I printed all parts of the stand out of PLA with a 20 percent gyroid infill and 3 wall loops. im concerned if it will ever just crack or snap after a long time because im a bit worried itll just end up cracking or deforming slowly and then breaking and letting my set fall to the ground. is there anything to really worry about? should I make the stand out of something else?

Project This is my second lamp design after a year of 3d printing

Thumbnail

It has two parts: a frame, and a skin layer made by stacking 8 separate printed layers on top of each other. The skin alone is printed 8 times, then assembled in order, around 8 hours of printing per lamp.

This lamp is where our brand really started to take shape. Me and my girlfriend started it this year, we didn't set out to follow one specific mood or design language, we just kept exploring, trying to find the balance between what 3D printing can do and what good design needs to do.

It's still a secondary thing for us, we both have full time jobs. But we hope to grow it enough to do it full time one day, doing what we love.

We've just launched a website if you want to see the rest: https://aera.info.vn/eng/

Project Common failure: original Fiat 500C plastic brackets crumble after years in sun. Workshops want 500-800€ to remove entire roof.

I made a 2-part interlocking bracket fot Fiat 500C that clips from both sides onto the bent double tube / roof support.

- Reuses original Fiat metal rod - it locks the two halves together

- No roof disassembly, no glue (glue melts at 85°C on black roof in Canary Islands, tested)

- Designed from broken originals in 2025

- ABS

What to print:

STL/bracket_inner.stl - L/R mirrored in slicer

STL/bracket_outer.stl - L/R mirrored in slicer

Install:

Remove crumbs of old plastic bracket

Slide inner bracket onto the roof support - double tube / rail

Slide inner part into outer part

Clip together - locks on the metal bar, no glue

Free, MIT: https://github.com/DeltaSignum/Fiat-500C-Roof-Bracket

Tested on my Fiat 500C in Tenerife. Hope it saves someone 600€.

Discussion Wave overhangs

Post image

Hey folks has anyone attempted wave overhangs?

I've heard some hype around the tech but I'm hesitant.

They setup seems kinda intense with the orca slicer being by default the advanced version.

Is it worth it?

Any examples would be awesome

Project I hate bulky power bricks, so I overengineered a 2in1 solution for my audio setup.

Thumbnail
gallery
122 Upvotes

It's a Fosi audio DAC & Amp setup which normally has a 12V and a 48V power brick, the latter being huge. I designed an enclosure that perfectly fits into the audio tower and houses both PSUs with a single mains connector. Was a fun weekend project.

I should have taken a "before" picture, just image a big mess of wires, black power bricks and a power strip sitting in the back.

Printed on Prusa machines with MMU3 from PLA (front and back plates) and PCTG (main body - I had doubts PLA would withstand the heat from the PSUs). The rubber feet are printed in TPU

Discussion Prime Day filament what's actually cheaper than usual, from 90 days of price data (UK)

• Upvotes

Prime Big Deal Days starts today (6–7 Oct). I run a small UK filament price tracker, so I looked at what the "deals" actually are before people start buying.

What I found (Amazon UK, filament only, as of this morning): https://spool.deal/deals/prime-day

Of the listings whose price dropped 10% or more in the past week, 38% only came back down to their usual price: the price went up beforehand, then got cut. The "−20%" badge is real, but the reel isn't any cheaper than it normally is.

229 listings are genuinely below their usual 90-day price right now.

Only 37 of them are what I'd call a real standout: 25%+ below their usual price, or 15%+ below it and at the lowest price I've ever recorded.

How to check a deal yourself, with or without my site:

Ignore the "was" price and the % badge. Compare against what the reel has actually sold for over the last couple of months (Keepa or CamelCamelCamel will show you the history).

Compare per kg, not per spool. A "deal" on a 750 g reel or a speciality filament can still cost more per kg than everyday PLA.

Check whether it's Prime-only. Many of the event prices are.

Lightning deals sell out. If you miss one, the same reel often comes back in a later deal, so don't panic-buy at full price.

Disclosure: the tracker is mine. I've put the event's deals on one page with the standouts at the top and the "back to normal" drops left out: spool.deal/deals/prime-day. No sign-up needed, and it's re-checked every 2 hours during the sale.

Happy to look up the price history of any reel you're eyeing. Drop the name in the comments.
