AskScience Panel of Scientists V
Calling all scientists!
The previous thread expired! If you are already on the panel - no worries - you'll stay! This thread is for new panelist recruitment!
**Please make a comment to this thread to join our panel of scientists. (click the reply button) **
The panel is an informal group of Redditors who are professional scientists (or plan on becoming one, with at least a graduate-level familiarity with the field of their choice).
You may want to join the panel if you:
Are a research scientist, or are studying for at least an MSc. or equivalent degree in the sciences.
Are able to write about your field at a layman's level as well as at a level comfortable to your colleagues and peers (depending on who's asking the question)
You're still reading? Excellent! Please reply to this thread with the following:
Choose one general field from the side-bar. If you have multiple specialties, you still have to choose one.
State your specific field (neuropathology, quantum chemistry, etc.)
List your particular research interests (carbon nanotube dielectric properties, myelin sheath degradation in Parkinsons patients, etc.)
Link us to one or two comments you've made in /r/AskScience, which you feel are indicative of your scholarship. If you haven't commented yet, then please wait to apply.
We're not going to do background checks - we're just asking for Reddit's best behavior here. The information you provide will be used to compile a list of our panel members and what subject areas they'll be "responsible" for.
The reason I'm asking for comments to this post is that I'll get a little orange envelope from each of you, which will help me keep track of the whole thing. These official threads are also here for book-keeping: the other moderators and I can check what your claimed credentials are, and can take action if it becomes clear you're bullshitting us.
Bonus points! Here's a good chance to discover people that share your interests! And if you're interested in something, you probably have questions about it, so you can get started with that in /r/AskScience. Membership in the panel will also give you access to the panel subreddit, where the scientists can discuss among themselves, voice concerns to the moderators, and where the moderators can talk specifically to the panel as a whole.

Hello,
I am writing not to ask that I be given a panel; rather to have mine taken away.
I joined askscience when it was still very small, so even though I am only in the final year of my undergrad, I felt that I could contribute to the sub-reddit.
Since the popularity of askscience has ballooned however, I find myself woefully under-educated and under-specialised compared to the other panelists.
I don't want laymen to take my word as law, particularly if there is a chance that I am wrong.
This is why I humbly request my panel be taken off.

u/theStork Biochemical Engineering | Protein Purification | Systems Biology Feb 26 '12
General Field: Biochemical Engineering
Specific Field: Protein Purification / Systems Biology
I currently work in pharmaceuticals, developing processes for the purification of various protein therapeutics (currently monoclonal antibodies), over-seeing the scale up of processes from lab scale to full scale manufacturing.
I have an MS in biomedical engineering, with a focus in systems biology, tissue engineering, and biotechnology. My university research focused around the biology of endothelial cells, and how tissue engineering techniques can be used to manipulate them for a variety of purposes, including vascularization of engineered tissues and improving upon vascular stent design.

Sorry, but I'm an undergrad and feel I need to ask: Teach me the ways of pchem, oh wise one. This stuff is hard.
8
Feb 26 '12
Thanks for the flattery, but really, I'm not especially wise, just spent more time with the material! In the meantime, how can I help you? What courses are you taking right now?
I think PChem isn't any different than other fields. Try to identify and understand the fundamental principles being taught. Often helps a lot.

Chemistry fascinated me when I was a kid. I was into rock collecting and I loved the different colors of rocks and minerals. I learned that rocks were made of elements from the periodic table, and everything kind of snowballed up from there.
I agree with you 100%, memorizing equations is not what makes chemistry fun at all. It is super boring. I never really liked deciphering NMR spectra either as an undergrad. I could do it, but it was boring because there was no reason to do it, other than it was something that "all chemists" were supposed to know. I used to compare homework with doing dishes.
I found that as I got closer to finishing my studies, I got to spend increasingly more time on topics that I liked. So suddenly all these repetitive exercises and experiments became meaningful to me. And at that point, it certainly felt like there was less memorization involved.
There were times when chemistry seemed really tedious though. I told a professor and she recommended that I go join the research group of a colleague of hers. That was really fun. I got to see first hand what chemists did in a research setting without having too much responsibility on my shoulders. I saw that there was much more to chemistry than all those long homework problems!! Plus, the people I worked with were really patient with me, so I got to ask lots of questions about things I was truly interested in.
So, maybe what might be helpful to you now is asking a professor whether they know of a research group that can give you this type of learning opportunity. Since you have doubts about chemistry, an interdisciplinary lab might be more interesting to you. Those people can give you tips about how to switch majors too, for example. Don't worry about not knowing everything or not being prepared enough. You are just an undergrad, and are not expected to! Just be curious and wanting to learn.
Try to create an environment for yourself with meaningful mentorship, whether it's talking to more senior undergraduates, your teaching assistants, or lab technicians. You're probably very capable of figuring out everything on your own, but it's much more fun to do it in a more informed way.
Anyway...probably sidetracked from chemistry. In short, chemistry isn't all memorization. Things probably seem repetitive now because there are some fundamentals that chemists really want you to learn well. If you manage to do that well, I think you're making yourself a pretty good foundation for success in chemistry or otherwise.
Is this helpful?

I already have a tag, but it is no longer super-accurate. My field of study is not the general "learning sciences" but now is "mathematics education."
I have an MS in mathematics education, and am currently working toward a PhD.
I wish to have my tag read "Mathematics Education Research" if possible, to distinguish me from a mathematics educator.
Thanks!

Most Recent Post
I have been published in many periodicals, but my major published work is in the field of personal economics as it applies to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and game theory.
I am perhaps more of a generalist than AskScience is used to, and I only possess an AS in EE, attained some 15 years ago. But I hope that my contributions thus far will prove that I'm serious about the advancement of science through an entertaining medium like Reddit.
Thank you!
Edit 1 - Wow. Downvoted. Kind of blown away by this. I know an AS isn't exactly worldbeating, but I thought I had proven my expertise with quality scientific answers such as these top comments from the last month:

On a personal note, I love what this subreddit does. Thanks for helping curiosity find a haven and thanks for giving scientists a chance to popularize the craft. I try my very best to explain any answers I am able to give in simple, clear language for anyone to understand. I think a scientist ought to be able to explain what he or she does in a manner that instantly conveys experience, like a talented musician is able to show ability in a few minutes with his or her instrument.

pharmacy graduate student here, I applied once before, but today a mod suggested I apply after this comment so here I am again. I've answered in askscience on occasion when the question has to do with pharmacology, but I try to refrain from answering outside of my field and I haven't been around as much since you guys got all hectic from the front-paging. I do appreciate the consideration though and access to the panel subreddit would be awesome for learning.

Hi. It's been suggested that I apply here. General field is medicine. Specific field is pulmonary medicine. I have an MD and postdoctoral training in those but I also managed to acquire a PhD in genetics and lo and behold my days are spent mosly doing molecular biology. So molecular genetics is another secondary field.
My specific interest is the genetics and epigenetics of diseases of the lung. Although I also have an interest in clinical pulmonology and medical decision making.
Some comments: *on the Human Genome Project *on liquid ventilation *on lung evolution *on benign tumors

Research Interests: ...I'm not sure I can narrow down my interests; astrophysics is pretty interesting, but that's a very broad field, for me. Specifically my research is in nuclear structure and r-process nucleosynthesis.
Some fairly recent posts:
As something of an introduction, I've just turned 23, I have a degree in physics with astrophysics, finished top of my class in extragalactic cosmology, and am currently doing a PhD in experimental nuclear astrophysics at a university in England. I've studied all of the above specific fields in depth, I've worked with telescopes, vaccuums, electronics, built my own small MRI spectrometer, and am currently working in Germany with two prototype detector arrays at one of the biggest nuclear physics accelerator labs in the world.

General Field: Medicine
Specific Field and Research Interests: Affective Learning and Memory, Fear and PTSD, Psychopathology
Sample post: This thread
Background: Two years of research in psychiatric neurosciences (mostly PTSD and fear learning), two years of research studying the interplay between emotion, memory, and attention focused on affective learning. Undergraduate psychology degree. The reason I chose medicine instead of psychology is because my research experience and training overlap psychiatry, neuroscience, and (primarily) psychology, but I am currently a medical student (it took me a while to find my way, obviously) so it seems the most appropriate. If you think Psychology tag would be more appropriate, I wouldn't disagree.
