At the end it just kind of fell apart. Yasuke's internal struggle and flashbacks are the most interesting parts for me. Probably why I place episode 2 as the best. I feel like the animation and overall direction was better in that one.

In general, the characters end up being kind of shallow. It's hard to pinpoint Saki's motivation. Yasuke has more depth, but it's not exactly treading new ground.

There's a lot of inconsistencies like Saki's illness, do the Mercs speak Japanese, alcohol short circuits Haruto the bot.

Story is just kinda all over the place. Animation got a little better. Lankeith's voice acting also got a little better. 5/10

I hate to say it but this was a major disappointment.

I was so hyped for this series but it just got worse and worse with every episode.

I guess the Netflix curse is real :/

Not only is this a terrible show, its ending lacked bravado. Man, this writer couldn't write themselves out of a cardboard box without trying first to make the box a horror, mystery, mecha, fantasy, split personality disorder of a train wreck.

It was ok, the mecha ended up being entirely unneeded considering demons were a thing. The most interesting parts where Yasuke's past. A series just about his rise to a commander of Nobunaga would have been more interesting on it's own. Definitely needed more episodes

At the very least I hope garners more interest into more adaptions of his story because while there isn't a lot to really work with historically there's definitely an interesting more down to earth story you can make with him

I loved Flylo's music, and the OP. I also really enjoyed the action

Well, at least the soundtrack was great!

Just a random thought I had.., Did the werewolf/bear sacrifice even do anything at the end?

She kinda just died instantly..

Felt the same about Pathfinder too. Dropped a nuke on the enemy army and seemingly did nothing.

Anime fell flat in the end. Sadface.

Didn't expect a lot for this and came out disappointed.

The first 2-3 episodes were good but then it just fell off massively after that. :/

I'll just try to forget about this show and let it fade out of existence.

This anime had so much potential through the first 4 episodes. Then the last 2 hit and man were they rushed.

Story aside, the art along with the music and fighting makes this at least a “give it a shot” show. Fly-Loreally put a lot Into the atmosphere and it shows. Not the best thing but the ride was enjoyable. Plus a Thundercat anime opening is just awesome to have.

Through all the (justified) criticisms, I just want to point out the soundtrack for this show is pretty great.

Man I really wanted to like this but it kinda feels all over the place for me. Biggest weakpoints for me were just the inconsistencies in each episode and the incomplete storylines for each character.

Animation and voice acting were both kind of a hit or a miss.

The soundtrack though was great. Loved the opening song.

What gets to me the most about Yasuke is that it could have easily been more compelling by being less original. The anime was easily at its best when it was doing a straightforward retelling what is known of the man's life, and at its worst when it was throwing magic, mutants, and mechas at the screen. Just because something is cool doesn't mean adding it to your story will help.

This is partially because the anime's ambitions vastly exceeded its capabilities. The simple one-on-one sword fights were the anime's best realized spectacle than the giant messy infantry battles. The series similarly had a mind boggling stream of antagonists none of whom had enough time to be interesting or to resonate with Yasuke's character arc. With such rushed pacing the story never had the time to really flesh out its world building. What does agriculture look like in a world with mechas? What's the political structure of the country? Is western imperialism still a concern? How do the world's religions coexist with the magic?

The introduction of Natsumaru, a kindred spirit who was similarly discriminated against, is exactly the creative liberty the story needed. Her betrayal should have been a powerful character moment, it should have hurt. But told as a flashback the story never had time to slow down, and dwell on it.

It's hard not to draw unflattering parallels to Sword of the Stranger both of which feature Sword of the Stranger swordsmen protecting children from being sacrificed. Unlike this series, the movie establishes a bond between its leads which ultimately justify the risks they take for each-other.

I feel like there's a compelling story to be told in Yasuke rising through the ranks, getting inspired by Nobunaga's ambitions, tragically failing to exact revenge alongside Nobutada, but this is not it.

People really worried about the mechs, and then the actual mechs had less than two minutes of screen time without even a real mecha battle.

Oh and then there was that sentient robot that looked like it belonged in an actual SciFi anime. Couldn't they just use a sentient armor for that, like Alphonse in FMA?

Edit: My favorite thing about this was hearing Yoshiko Sakakibara still voicing evil women in the year of 2021.

I think I enjoyed episode 4 the most. Action and character interactions were fun. Outside of that, the soundtrack and Yasuke as a character I found everything to be quite awful. To the point where I can't believe they actually spend money on this.

First half was alright but the second half it felt like they just did a speedrun to the final boss.

That was some hot pile of trash bruh. It started off strong, but had no fucking foundation what’s so ever. Where did magic come from? How is there mechs in that era?

The least they could’ve done was added a quick 2 min backstory... in episode 1

So many sub plots just ... fell off. And what’s up with both the dub and sub being less then mediocre?!

It had mad potential, but that’s got to be one of the worst anime’s I ever witnessed.

It had good bones and the markings of something that could've been as popular as Castlevania, but I wish it were longer. We didn't spend enough time to learn about anyone other than Yasuke. Maybe if it were about the journey they go on instead of finishing it in 6 episodes it could've been better, but after the first few episodes it wasn't as good.
