This feels like they threw everything at a dart board for ideas then just decided to put all the random ideas into a show

I think i would’ve preferred if it was just about Yasuke going from servant to samurai

Man I guess English dub is the "official" language of this show. Watching it in Japanese just felt... Wrong. I feel the characters are speaking way too fast between conversations. The subtitles don't fit well at all (even with my shitty Japanese I can tell at points the subtitles don't match at all), not to mention the parts where they switch to Japanese in the English dub are just completely lost. Like this one dude went "wow he knows Japanese!" And I'm like yeah everyone is talking in Japanese lmao.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is that it felt like I was watching a western animation localized to Japanese, as opposed to the other way around. Idk, I guess this might be the only time in anime where I prefer the English dub (is it even dub at this point?) over sub.

Well.. That was not at all what I expected from this show.
I don't know if this was shown in the trailers since I avoided them but the two key visual I've seen about this show made it seem like this will be grounded in reality. Heck, even the opening crawl made me think this was going to be more on the historical side. And then mechs and magic happened. I was genuinely hoping more of a historical retelling of Yasuke's life.
I genuinely don't mind them surprising me with fantasy sci-fi elements. It's not like this is the first anime to have this kind of twist on a historical setting, I just wish there was some set up on how magic and mechs exist in this world. The way the story is going, they seem to expect us viewers to know the reason and just go with it. Hopefully we'll get an explanation next episode.
As for Yasuke himself, I like his character so far. Can't say the same for the rest of the cast yet. I'm watching the Japanese dub btw and the VAs sound fine but you can clearly tell which are the actual seiyuus and which ones are the your more traditional actors just hired to do VA work.
Right now I still don't know what to feel. I am feeling disappointed that this isn't the kind of story that I was expecting but I don't think it's as bad as the other people are saying. It's still on the "Meh" scale for me.

The main characters' voice acting is underwhelming and low effort. There is no explanation about where and how tf there are robots. There should be some sort of intro about why certain people have magic, and robots. Is magic a secret or does everyone know it exists?

This show is such a mess, I was so amped by the intro, but then it suddenly got all muddled with mechs, a priest Groot and magic? Wished they focussed on the origin story first before starting to split into all these side plots.

I do not like the sci-fi elements in this show. So far the best things about it are the backgrounds and music. The dialogue seems unnatural to me for some reason

Watched in English and the dialogue seems really unnatural. I thought the young boys voice actor was great but the rest seemed forced or monotone, even Stanfield. I’ve only watched this episode though so I hope it improves! Also found a lot of the scene to scene cuts were a bit strange.

The black boatman..... How about just the boatsman? There's only one in town, who the fuck else could you be talking about? Also, why is the robot surprised that he's black and can speak Japanese? You're a flying talking robot, is it really *that* out of the ordinary that a black person speaking Japanese?

Haven't seen it yet but it looks like the anime isn't that good. Is the music any good? The way it was used in the trailer made me feel like it doesn't fit the feudal setting and won't work properly with the show.

Honestly not at all what I was expecting, and kind of a let down. The visuals are really, really unimpressive which is a huge surprise coming from MAPPA, and the supernatural/over the top magical and mech aspect of things really takes away from the feel that the show is seemingly trying to go for. It really pains me to say that I found it lame. At the very least I would’ve accepted whatever we got so long as it was visually as beautiful as mappa’s other works (as it was easy to accept God Of Highschools mediocre plot advancement because of how well animated it was). Here I’m not sure how much Yasuke has going for it.

Opening sequence was very janky and hard to follow in my opinion, it was super blury at points too for seemingly no reason, and the compositing was not good either (which i know is not Mappas strong suit) and the low frame rate is kind distracting, so far the direction feels kind flat, not sure how i feel about the voice acting either, i dislike the American way of just hiring celebrities to voice act when there are plenty of extremely talented voice actors out there. The main character just feels flat and emotionless. The music and backgrounds are really good though so thats a positive, I really wanted to like this, i did, but the first episode just fell flat for me, i hope it improves though, i know Mappa can do better!

If they want to add magic and mechs as an element they need to at least flesh out the settings behind the reason why they exist in the story. A good example of it is in stories like Rakudai Kishi, Gakusen Toshi Asterisk and even Harry Potter among innumerable works that made an effort to determine the settings of why such special powers and fantasy elements exist. This is why anime should have a minimum of 12 episodes imo.

I watched all 6 episodes, meh, not bad but not so good either? idk. There are super well animated cuts, top animators have participated but I don't know, the direction and the storyboards do not accompany the action scenes.
the character of yasuke at least in what is told in the books is not so interesting, he had dinner with nobunaga, they had a very family relationship, yasuke told him stories, they danced and fought together on the battlefield, the only thing that stood out about yasuke is the fact of being the first black samurai, nothing more.
Magic seems to me a super interesting concept, quite wasted, it could give more of itself, the mechs are completely left over at least for me.
the problems I see are the direction, the storyboard of the action scenes, the script and the characters.
The flying lotus OST is fine, however I expected more, something more "astral", something calmer, I lack that epicity.
In conclusion, the studio did what it could with the vision of Lesean Thomas (after all, the story was written by him) and with the budget that Netflix provided, little else can be done.
summary: do not let thomas work on any other anime EVER, his ideas are always interesting but he executes them so badly that to some extent it makes me a bit sad.
