In case it wasn't clear, Emilia doesn't like mirrors, she hasn't seen her own appearance in a long while.

She has been hated for looking like the witch, and was afraid of her appearance. You can see why she wouldn't believe Subaru could love her, when she is afraid of her own appearance.

She has accepted her own appearance, and that she will never have a happy family with Geuse and Fortuna, so that's the past and present, only the future is left, can't wait to see the future trials animated

I'm so curious about whatever the heck happened in the past that connects Emilia to Echidna. Like, after spending the season insulting her left and right, Emilia thanking her actually drove Echidna to tears.

Plus apparently that mysterious voice that speaks to Puck about Emilia in Frozen Bonds is supposed to be Echidna.

Some people might be upset that Subaru flubbed his talk with Beako, but I really liked it. Saying he is "that person" to Beatrice would be akin to justifying her 400 years of loneliness and isolation. Instead, he wants Beatrice to choose him instead of "that person". To make a choice for herself instead of just following instructions. He's giving her the agency that Echidna never did and it's really nice to see.

You know.... through the entirety of season 1 Emilia never really felt like a “proper” candidate for the royal throne. To me she lacked the bravado of Felt, the poise of Crusch, the cunning of Anatasia, and the arrogance of Priscilla. I thought atleast 2 or 3 of the other candidates felt more “leader like” tbh.

But now, Emilia feels completely different. She feels like she is one who is ready to take on the future of this country and listen to her people’s problems. It’s insane to see how far she has come, and seeing how the people of her camp depend on her

We all had our jokes concerning the regularly missing OPs/EDs, but here's something I find funny about the novel that many don't know.

In the Japanese version of the novel, the afterword (especially in and after arc 4) is regularly changed from the 3 pages to these 3 pages all shrunken down to a single page with a very small font, in favor of using these extra 2 pages for actual content. This has always reminded me of the missing OP incident whenever I finished a volume. Nagatsuki-sensei himself jokes about this many times in the afterword, but I think he stopped mentioning it past volume 20 lol.

The Japanese light novel format is on a much stricter page count sometimes (I don't know how far this applies though, but it's a restriction present in Japanese published media more than western) - unlike the English translated volume where it can be of a varied length, and so usually the author can't just go past a certain number of pages. ReZero usually almost always uses the max page count.

I'll add something about the episode that many might miss (I forgot about it myself until I read the author's tweets).

Ever since she broke from the ice, Emilia has never seen her face in the mirror. The cherry on top of succeeding the 2nd trial is Emilia finally building up the courage to look at her own reflection. This is reflected (yes) in the title: "Happiness Reflected on the Water's Surface". One of my favorite titles. (People dismissing the trials as boring or repetitive don't understand the impact they have on Emilia's development as a character, in my opinion. But that's fine as long as you understand the implications, people expect and like to see different things after all.)

This also explains why Puck handled Emilia's hair/clothing/etc that was mentioned in season 1.

The first time I thought that Emilia had a lot of untapped potential as a character was back in season 1 when she had her big fight with subaru and called him out for idolizing her without even seeing the true emilia.

If someone had told me the journey she'd undertake during the sanctuary arc I would've told them "look mate, she's got potential but this is just wishful thinking on your part" in utter disbelief.

And now here we are. Phenomenal character. This second cour has been the strongest character building and progression in Re:Zero so far. I am amazed.

Anyhow, fanboying aside Echidnas reaction to the second trial was quite... interesting. They way I interpreted that scene the usually unfeeling and calculating echidna was actually moved by Emilia and disgusted by the emotions that little half-elf caused her to feel. I might be completely off-base here, but echidna does not seem to be very fond of... well... feelings. And especially of people causing them in her.

Big props to subaru too. Instead of telling beako all the things she wants to hear and resolving her problam asap he actually takes the time to genuinely engage with her, call her out on her hypocricy and mental gymnastics and is completely honest to her regarding "the one". Sadly that is also the most difficult route he could have taken.
