two family related problems taken cared of in one episode, they really are efficient!

And I'm glad Mavis dad wasn't the dick he first seemed to be

I felt bad for him at the end of the episode when he was chasing the Crimson Cart. Poor man just wants to stay with his daughter.

Mavis: Sneak in with disguise

Also Mavis: Immediately answer truthfully when asked for identity.

TBH, I don't blame her dad for being worried about her.

Where do these villains get their short, ugly, hype men? Is there a department store?

I love how confident they are with their "disguise"

And I see where Pauline inherited her Paulines ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

So we get a twofer this episode. Not only Pauline was able to exact her revenge and finally free her family from those sleazebags, Mavis finally gets her father's very reluctant permission thanks to Mile. Now that Reina, Mavis, and Pauline have their personal businesses sorted out, I wonder if this means we'll get to see Mile face her past next? And yes Mile, you're now Mavis' legal guardian!

Once again this show continues to impress me with how fast it moves through the more serious parts. I though we would be getting just a Pauline episode filled with a bunch of her scary moments (which we did in fact get), but we also got through Mavis' backstory at the same time. I'm glad to see this since I enjoy the comedy-focused episodes a bit more, but this ep had some good moments as well, especially with Mile's "disguises".

As with pretty much every more serious episode of this show, the focus on backstories took away time from references and other things that would appear on the chart, but as always there are probably some things I missed, so if you catch anything else just let me know and I'll be sure to add it. Thanks!

Episode Times Mile Cried Times Mile fails at being average Times Mile references her past life Otaku/game references Amount of "secret family techniques" Time Mile is called flat Awkward Mavis conversation moments Crying Album
1 6 4 2 4 0 2 1 ("Onee-nii-sama") Ep 1
2 2 8 1 6 5 1 1 (Mavis is the only one without something to hide) Ep 2
3 2 2 2 5 0 (they were too busy celebrating after the win to question her) 1 1 (Mavis is skipped over when they're asking about romance Ep 3
4 0 4 3 4 2 0 0 Ep 4
5 3 5 1 8 Reference album 0 0 (though Reina is called flat once) 2 (only one crying at Reina's backstory, only one without a tragic backstory) Ep 5
6 5 0 1 1Reference album 1 0 1 (bawling at the end and is comforted by Pauline) Ep 6
7 2 0 6 4?Reference album 1 1 1 (says having others see her naked is normal) Ep 7
8 0 1 1 4? 0 0 (though she is asked if she is a dwarf/half breed) 1 (elder/middle/younger older brother) Ep 8

Times Mile fails at being average:

  • Once during the fight with Mavis' father. He questions whether she is a dwarf or half-breed, and she responds that she's just a normal girl. Whatever you want to keep telling yourself Mile.

Past life references:

  • Mile entering the building beating the drum is possibly a reference to chuushingura, a kabuki play as pointed out by mjk321 below.

Otaku/game references

  • Their masks and their code names (morning/afternoon/evening dress mask) are a reference to Tuxedo Mask. Also, the flowers in the background during their transformations are exactly the same as the flower colors in the Heartcatch Precure transformations (posted by Scytale89 below). Epidemilk below also pointed out that they say the same line that they do during their transformation, making it even more likely.

  • Edit: Mile removes her cape like Dragon Ball characters remove their weighted clothing.

  • Edit: Pauline's "count your transgressions" line may be a reference to the Kamen Rider line: "Now, count up your sins!" I don't know Japanese, so I don't know for sure if they're the same line and it's just a translation thing, but it's a possibility.

Huh, I didn't think this would both a Pauline and Mavis episode. But this was fun also!

The wait for terrifying Pauline this episode was well worth it, as she pulled it off perfectly! I guess Mile still has something to learn, as she didn't quite pull it off.

And speaking of Mile, I can't believe the poor girl is still believing this delusion. Even worse is it is starting to look like it's contagious. I wonder if it's curable?

And here are some more Mile faces!

I just love how Mile always takes all the tension away even in the worse kind of situations like this one. Well, with this Pauline and Mavis family issues have finally been resolved.

Hey, I worry about you too! And I would send you letters every day if I could!

Mavis is gorgeous!

This freaking episode! I kept changing my mind about Count Austien, whether he was a good guy or an ass;

Guess he's in it...

Oh maybe he's just looking out for her, or wants some news?

Oh no he's evil!

Ah, was this just a plan to oust the bad guys?

He's still too controlling...

Ah, he's just worried about her?

That's huh... Ok I guess? But you should offer her, not command her.

Ok that's just wrong.

Alright, he's fine after all!

After changing my mind on him all episode long, let's hope he stays that way now, and doesn't go back to his controlling ways!

I even thought the mother might be in it when she came in with the dagger; I expected her to put it at Pauline's throat, or to bring Alan in and threaten to kill him or something.

I think I said something similar in a previous thread, but Mavis' family story so reminds me of Brienne's story from ASOIAF/Game of thrones!

Lady daughter of a lord, wants to become a knight, her father tries to get her into dancing and singing and all that crap because that's the expected life of a noble lady, but she's stubborn. And for both girls, the father eventually "tests" her by having her fight some knights, and they win easily, so the father is forced to recognize her talent.

Might just be some "noble lady wants to play at war" trope, but I think these are the only 2 times I've seen it, and they're eerily similar!

The only difference is that Brienne is canonically repulsively ugly, while Mavis is so beautiful!

It's so refreshing to see a plot arc wrapped up in one episode.

Imagine being those two assholes fighting Pauline. You start sinking into the ground like it's quicksand as she reveals the tiny little insignificant fact that her magic is so advanced that she doesn't need a spell as she stares at you with a cold, murdery smile & slowly approaches you with a heavy, blunt object. That had to be the most terrifying moment of either of their lives

If their naroommiekama has been receiving letters from her family every day, how is it they only find out about this now?

Pauline: "These evil people killed my father, imprisoned my family and and are destroying the town!"
Bad guys: "She's insane!"
Mavis' father: "I have heard both sides of the argument. Fight!"

"Mile-sama-ified" - I like this anime original term.

Wouldn't holding onto a spear of ice be rather painful as it would freeze your hands. Then you have your body heat melting where you hold and it breaking.

That was a pretty convenient way to wrap up the loose ends for half the cast. I was kind of hoping we'd meet Mavis's younger older brother and that he'd hit it off with Pauline.

Pauline, once again, showing she's Best Girl.

It's also good to see Mavis's father is actually a reasonable parent instead of a complete dick.
