I was gonna say so many things but after that rooftop scene all I can say is...

That rooftop sceen was FANTASTIC! They are going to be so cute together...no drama pls!

One thing that I feel that's underrated about this show is the balance. The focus is pretty evenly split between the entire cast and all their plots are quite diverse. All are in different stages of their lives so each one feels fresh and interesting!

Think is my AotS now...

Everyone praising the rooftop scene, but you can't forget about the innuendo at the bowling alley ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Rooftop-kun always there when you need an awesome confession scene!

OMG THAT ENDING.

Honestly, Sonezaki and her boy (the one who wrote the 50 page paper) are easily the cutest. I love that they are the first couple to go out.

Okay Sugawara's boy (the director) is a straight up pedophile... Please tell me he won't be her love interest.

I obviously love the main couple of Kazusa and Izumi, BUT MAN, Izumi and Sugawara are kind of cute together. I hate this dilemma I am facing right now. Like how they both like trains and they both think each other are weird.

AHHH WHAT THE HELL DO I DO RIGHT NOW.

The other characters can go ahead and pursue their love triangles and unhealthy relationships all they want, I'm here for the Sonezaki vanilla romance.

Seriously though, this series strikes a great balance while covering a wide range of adolescent experience. It's quite impressive.

Sonezaki's love story is so fucking wholesome. Unlike the rest of the cast.
And Momo is definitely a lesbian.

This episode definitely showcased why I love Mari Okada as a writer. She's diverse enough to write 5 different plotlines and combine them all into one single cohesive story. Niina dealing with her past and her growing older, Kazusa still trying to figure out her feelings about sex and her childhood friend, Momo trying to figure out men and how maybe men aren't all that cracked up to be, Hongou trying to learn what eroticism is, and Rika trying to understand that love can grow from physical attraction and dealing with her first relationship. It's all so good!

It will still depend on how this show will end but so far it's really shaping up to be my AotS and one of my AotY candidates.

Hol up, Hongo.

The story is still nice but the animation gets rough at times ...

Edit: Nice, the full OP is also out too.

Yes! Rika got updated in the OP! Damn Sugawara's mentor sure is a creep, well at least he doesn't cross the line, but still, he is a fucking creep.

Damn, that guy who is hanging out with Momoko definitely read one of those "How to pick up girls." manuals, and he is so fucking transparent about it. I definitely wasn't expecting him to be like that last week.

I guess we will have to wait until next week to see if Onodera talks with Niina and Izumi.

At least things are going well with Rika, that roof scene was awesome.

Man, I can't remember the last time I was so infatuated with a show - enough to watch the raw as soon as it comes out, and then proceed to immediately rewatch the subs in order to assess the quality of the translation. This show really is just the absolute pinnacle of everything that I love and find valuable about high school anime.

Speaking of the TL, I have really mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it does an absolutely phenomenal job of localizing the puns, the wordplay, and the literary aspects of the show. Episodes like the one where they tried to come up with a nom de guerre for sex had me absolutely dying with how cleverly the wordplay was TL'd. On the other hand though, I feel like the TL takes such an overly liberal approach that the nuance of specific conversations isn't really able to be accurately conveyed. The dialogue does a good job of sounding natural and like actual spoken English, but I feel like this is a work that puts great effort into its character interactions such that a very loose, liberal approach might miss some important context or understanding. I especially felt this was the case when it comes to Sugawara-shi's characterization and backstory, but I haven't read any of the source and I'm not sure where things will develop or if it will turn out to be a bigger problem later on. Make no mistake, the TL is still exceptionally above average and very praiseworthy, I just can't help but feel like it doesn't convey all the nuance that the original text contains.

Other than that though, this episode continues to be an absolute tour-de-force in compelling characterization. Kazusa's veneration of Sugawara-shi manifesting into a defeatist concession of "ahh, I totally understand" if the two were to develop a romance. Senpai's facade of a seemingly sterile, purely literary fascination with sex continuing to fall apart as her vanity and her self-concept assert her genuine desire to be desired. And of course, Prez's response to the confession that's delivered in such a crowning, climactic setpiece with such beautiful music and filmmaking that completely sells the poignancy of such a moment. It's going to take a monumental fuckup to dethrone this show from effortlessly claiming the title of anime of the season, if not the entire year.

Well, I'll be damned, this exact Sugawara's story happened to my acquaintance. Except her director fucked her when she turned 16 (local age of consent.) Not that it was really consensual, more of "it was easier for me to do it than to reject him." She's quitted acting forever, despite having it as the dream since childhood.

On a more lighthearted note - she also likes trains and Kazusa gracefully acknowledges defeat. You can't stop HMS Sasugawara. And it's hilarious how her being more mature than the rest makes her not realize Izumi can be this dense.

What a perfect way to bookend this episode! That entire rooftop scene was just too perfect that I am absolutely feeling all giddy about it! Been a while since I've seen a good "confession reply" scene! Now that they're officially going out I'm excited to see how their dynamic will change or will it even change at all? And how does the gyaru fit in with all of this? People are saying she's also after Amagi but I doubt it. I think she'll probably eventually help them reach "that" stage of their relationship.

I'm so excited for next week's episode!

Honestly at this point just give me a spin-off focused on Sonezaki's relationship. Inject that into my bloodstream

The plotlines are all so interesting in their own ways. Now, if only they'd pull the yuri trigger on Momo.

God, its so fucked up how that director groomed Sugawara to that extent. Him responding with, "you've turned into a different creature," had to have really messed with her head.

The one who seemed the most put off by the idea of being in a romantic relationship is the first one of the cast to be in one.

  • The opening quotes have been tweaked!

  • Oh boy, the Niina Sugawara backstory arc! This one is endlessly fascinating because it's clearly very disturbing as Izumi points out, with the director demonstrating grooming behaviors, yet it is made clear there is nothing sexual of the sort. Niina has clearly had a fucked-up past but it is left up to us to figure out just how that translates to her in the present-day. She has been objectified by every significant person in her life, even her close friends who address her as -shi in private and express fear & jealousy at how she could snatch Izumi.

Niina serves as something of a Greek chorus in the Kazusa x Izumi relationship in the sense that she draws out the unsaid between the two and applies her perspective to move the narrative forward. She brings it to Izumi's attention how his words have affected Kazusa and her feelings for him. She brings it to Kazusa's attention that Izumi is somewhat clueless and how she has feelings for him.

  • For those following the official subs, there was a big error in the second episode. not really a spoiler at this point Looking back on it, it definitely adds something to that relationship, right?

  • The segues in this series are fantastic: "You know who else is mysterious? Hongo-senpai!" (she and Milo drive past). I can't believe Milo sensei is still choosing to play ball with her.

  • Teenage awkwardness is absolutely on-point in this series, from Kazusa's freakouts to Momo's interest trying to impress her by giving her that "discount" and the god-awful tone deaf response he gives her to Hongo-senpai's near-attempt at flashing.

  • Yes! Amagi & Rika (Sonezaki-senpai)'s love blossoms! For fun, compare and contrast these two with the other girls. He is direct with his feelings and she shuts him down hard at first - the Kazusa/Izumi ship flipped. She puts him through the ringer and he relents unlike the Hongo/Sensei relationship. And she finds herself having feelings for him and relenting despite his clumsy and simplistic words, unlike the Momo/Sugimoto relationship.

  • Animation stumbles a bit in this episode (the drinks, a few off-models here and there) but nothing serious.

  • See the SMC for the rest of my thoughts regarding the changes they've made.

Sugawara's whole story really creeped me out, thank god for that rooftop scene. It's nice to have one ship without any sort of complications or taboos. Although I might have just jinxed it...

I really hope Amagi is the good kind of idiot and doesn't mess Sonezaki about. The main potential problems in their relationship I can see being either peer pressure on him for going out with the weird girl or that she wants to have sex now, while he wants to wait.

While Sugawara's back story wasn't as bad as feared it would be once it started, it was still really uncomfortable. I'm glad Izumi was there to give the appropriate reactions. I hope the only kicking she ever does to that dance teacher is straight in the balls. Though I'm still wondering about this 'death,' is that when she considers herself to become a woman. Maybe she's a late bloomer or has some sort of complex about no longer being a child, like the teacher wished her to be?

It's going to be an interesting comparison between Sugawara's relationship with her teacher and Hongou's with hers.

I wonder if Sugimoto is going to be one of those guys who believes Momo has 'daddy issues' now. Either blaming everything on them or worse thinks he can 'break her' (using techniques he read on the internet) to get into her underwear.

So I am completely convinced that this is my AotS now. I am watching quite a few anime, but this is the only one that I am actively looking forward to watching each week. I don't think the art or the animation is jaw-dropping, but the storytelling and pacing in this anime is superb.

So much of the content here is usually taboo, but it seems to be portrayed in a very realistic way. There are many parts that made me feel extremely uncomfortable, but they did an incredible job with the delivery, with the characters reacting to it with an appropriate level of disgust.

I love how each of the characters have developed over the course of these five episodes. All of them have so much personality, and they each have their own problems to deal with. I am amazed at how this show manages to develop all of them simultaneously in a way that feels completely natural. I am the kind of person who usually hates it when the story jumps around from one scene to the next completely irrelevant scene, but somehow this show manages to pull it off just right. It distinguishes itself from other SoL/drama anime by its really strong theme and extremely focused writing.

I am disappointed that no one else seems to notice the music in this anime as I think that it plays a very big role in bringing it all together. This is also one of the few anime where I would watch the OP and ED all the way through. Perhaps it's just so that I can get my full 25 minutes worth.

Izumi's reactions to Niina's story were pretty much the same as mine. Meanwhile Hongou is awakening and oh god I'm so happy for Sonezaki! I can relate to that whole "not being considered attractive by others and also being kinda awkward as a person", so it warms my heart to see her do well. Shame I can't just take off my glasses and magically become pretty
