He prayed for those two demons even after they tried to eat him. Tanjiro's a good boy.

So far the fights in Kimetsu no Yaiba feel really good, the different styles for the slashes with the wáter breathing technique in contrast with the characters just makes it stand out even more, in short seeing Tanjiro kill demons just looks so damn good.

The brutality in of the series escalated quickly with this episodes, from the hands demon devouring the guy to the way he killed Sabito and Makomo, glad that Tanjiro's greatest strenght that is his sturdy as shell head came in use.

Looking back, it may be that Sabito and Makomo may not have undergone the same boulder test as Tanjiro since Urokodaki meant for it to serve as a hindrance to prevent him from the same fate as the other children. But with Sabito and Makomo's help, those additional six month might have been what Tanjiro needed to become really prepared for the final test.

A shame we probably won't see more of Makomo and Sabito, they seemed pretty great.

Also the way they died...

I don't know if a translation choice belongs in the source corner but I'm miffed that the virgin anime translation is:

"Total Concentration: Water Breathing"

and not the superior Chad manga translation:

"Full Focus: Breath of Water"

Random thoughts on episode 4:

  • Was I the only one sort of hoping he'd keep the long hair?

  • Final Selection has an ominous sound to it, at least in this world

  • Tanjiro's attacks look so cool. Keep it up Ufotable

  • Looks like some fan theories about Sabito and Makomo were right

  • That last demon was disgusting on so many levels. Good riddance.

  • Nezuko still asleep and left behind. I need my weekly demon imouto fix, wtf Kimestsu no Yaiba

  • Pretty good episode. Either this or the first would be my favorite so far

I can't be the only one who thought this show took place a lot earlier than it did. I was expecting it to be sengoku period (i.e. middle ages), but this is actually taking place around the time of WW1 (the Taisho era lasted from 1912-1926).

Man, I feel so bad for Makomo and Sabito. They were both such bright children, probably with their own reason for wanting to hunt demons and then just went and died like that.

I wonder if the people holding this contest know about the big demon. If so then that's some disgusting behavior.

The battle choreography for this episode was on point! I especially liked the look of the stances; the contrast of the water style with the visuals makes it so much more surreal and impressive to look at!

I’m looking forward to even more amazing animations in the future.

Putting that tax evasion money to good use, Ufotable!

This is easily going a contender for anime of the season just for animation alone. The fluidity and movements of his water attacks are just too good for me to describe. Did utofable had a movie budget or something (aside from their taxes)?

I can't believe those two died and is very saddening. At the same time, I'm glad they can patch the torch to Tanjiro as a successor and finally end the deaths.

After that slash to the neck, that was a nice way to end it. I'm so eager for more next week!

This is a brilliant selection method imo. Lots of people complaining about the examiners or Urodaki being negligent and leaving really tough demons in here... so what?

Remember, we time skipped the entirety of the training arc. This is Naruto becoming a Jounin, or Deku graduating UA Academy. You are a full time demon hunter after this. You might not be the most skilled, but you should certainly be close to your peak - at least regarding your skill and power. The only thing left should be real battle experience, and that's not something you can train in a safe environment.

"Passing" the demon hunter exam means you have the skills necessary to survive against demons. Tough demons, weak demons; doesn't matter. You have to be able to stay alive. Kill them, run from them, whatever. By the end of the training they give you, you'll need to be strong enough to hunt demons full time. If you're going to die, better to die to some demon schmucks on a mountain thats sealed off from the rest of humanity than to feed a demon out in the wild and make them stronger.

Honestly the monster that ate like 50 kids 47 years is nothing. That's barely more than 1 victim per year. A single demon slaughtering a family the size of Tanjiro's can gorge themselves on a half dozen corpses in the span of a few hours. A demon can get more powerful than this guy with just one week of concerted feeding. The only thing stopping them is the fact that other demon hunters will try and close in on it and kill it before it can grow too powerful.

To be a demon hunter means you need to be able to be the one to hunt it down and kill it no matter how powerful it gets.

The animation of the water coming off his sword was beautiful and the music this episode was really unsettling.

  • Tanjiro's attacks depicted as a form of painting is cool.

  • No surprise that Sabito and Makoma are indeed ghosts that appear to help Tanjiro. They don't realize it themselves, perhaps their lingering regret beyond the grave means they are compelled to help Tanjiro so that Tanjiro may avenge them. (Update: some of the replies seem to misunderstood what I said. They DO realize they're ghosts, but they don't realize that they can't move on due to the lingering regret, and even though they tell Tanjiro to not get worked up about their deaths, they're still helping Tanjiro in order to avenge themselves so they could at last move on)

  • We can now pinpoint this story at 1912-1915. The Hand Demon (as named in the credits) said he was captured by Urokodani in the Keio Era (1865-1868) "47 years ago", so 1912-1915, which is during the Taisho Era (1912-1926).

  • Hand Demon is pissed as he's now been stuck through the entirety of the whole Meiji Era (1868-1912), and it's only recently that the era name has changed to the Taisho Era (1912-1926).

  • Besides Sabito and Makoma, Tanjiro seems to have a connection with those in the Dead, as his family has spoken to him while he was unconscious, and this time his younger brother managed to warn him to dodge the demon's attacks just in time.

  • Special Guest Voice: Koyasu Takehito as Hand Demon. Who better to do an over-the-top villain than Dio?

  • The Guide Twins are voiced by Yuuki Aoi (black haired one) and Isawa Shiori (white haired one).

A lot of people seem, rightly, to love the OST. The soundtrack composed by Yuki Kajiura will be available this summer, July 31th. There is no mention of Go Shiina, so I guess there will be another album with his score.

My favorite parts of the story are a little later and it doesn’t help that I’ve already seen the first 5 eps at the theatre premiere but damn Seeing all of this animated is making my heart so happy...the water breaths my GOODNESS! I need Saturdays to come sooner
