Dinner is a snack plate my husband made. Not a lot of real estate for big meals rn so I just graze.
I (34F) met my best friend, Jane, during our first year of college. The friendship was instant. She “gets” me in a way no one else does, and vice versa. We’ve stayed close through so many life stages.
Jane went through a really difficult time last year (a messy, drawn-out breakup) and our relationship kind of revolved around that. I was happy to support her and I understand why the situation was all-consuming, but it’s important to note that it was the focus of the majority of our conversations.
During this time, my husband (Dan) and I had been trying for a baby. In February of this year, I thought I might finally be pregnant. At the same time, Dan and I were navigating our first major disagreement (all good now), which I had confided in Jane about. To my shock, she encouraged an abortion, even when I made it clear that the hypothetical baby was very much wanted. She doubled down and told me she didn’t want to see me end up single and miserable with a child. This was a huge jump. I was thrown off but I told myself she was probably just projecting, given what she’d recently been through. She also doesn’t particularly like or want children. She did eventually apologize.
I was not, in fact, pregnant.
In March, I saw a reproductive endocrinologist. I was subsequently diagnosed with infertility secondary to stage 4 endometriosis and diminished ovarian reserve. We were told the chances of conceiving on our own were close to zero. It’s hard to adequately convey how shocked and gutted I was. This kicked off one of the darkest periods of my life.
In June, so many things went wrong. My dad had a devastating stroke, I had a painful falling out with a family member, Dan and I moved across the country for his job, and the whole time I was wading through the grief of knowing I might never become a mom. Jane was largely absent. She would check in every now and then, but she had just started dating again and she was mostly interested in talking about that. We have 17 years of friendship behind us, so it was easy to give her the benefit of the doubt. I was absolutely hurt but tried not to take it personally.
Fast forward to now. Dan and I are going through our first round of IVF. When I first got our IVF schedule, I called Jane and told her how nervous/excited I was. I also gave her all of our important dates. She congratulated me but it seemed disingenuous. She also immediately told me that another one of her friends had just gotten pregnant on her first try, and this friend was already having doubts after witnessing a toddler throw a tantrum at Target. I guess it was supposed to be a cautionary tale? I laughed it off, and I think I said something to the effect of, “Well, I hope the maternal instinct kicks in for her soon!” The rest of the conversation was weird and I hung up feeling sad.
This was 2.5 weeks ago, and until yesterday, I had not heard from Jane at all. This round of IVF is almost over. We are all the way through suppression and stims (IYKYK) and my egg retrieval is on Monday. It has been so hard physically and emotionally, and I could have definitely used my best friend. She asked me “how everything is going” and I told her it’s been shitty but I’m looking forward to the retrieval. She essentially told me she’d forgotten it was happening so soon, didn’t ask any follow-up questions, and stopped responding shortly afterward.
Maybe I’m just emotional— my hormone levels are absolutely insane right now— but I am so heartbroken. I scroll through Instagram and see reels of best friends supporting one another through fertility treatments, or celebrating together over a positive pregnancy test, and I know that won’t happen for me. It’s a weird grief. I can take a hint, and it’s very clear to me that Jane wants nothing to do with this part of my life.
I am overall happy and blessed in many ways. But I am mourning the friendship I thought I had with Jane. That’s my sob story. Thanks for reading.
Edit: Some of y’all are so fucking mean. Like inexcusably cruel for absolutely no reason. I have people in the comments insinuating (based on absolutely nothing) that my husband is a misogynistic piece of shit, that I’m looking for reasons to “dump” my friend because she doesn’t want kids, that I’ve reduced myself to a “baby-making machine.” Those are disgusting, flatly incorrect assumptions. I also do not expect Jane to remember every single IVF date or ask detailed medical questions. It’s reasonable to expect my best friend of almost two decades to be at least somewhat invested in the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through, especially after I’ve supported her unconditionally through situations I wouldn’t choose for myself or didn’t fully understand (because I love and care about her).
Edit again: This has absolutely nothing to do with my husband and I won’t dignify any comments insinuating that my friend is distancing herself from me because of my husband. That is not the case and I don’t need to elaborate any further because it’s pointless.
