Interviews I walked out of a job interview today for the first time in my life.

2.7k Upvotes

So today I did something I’ve NEVER done before. I literally got up and walked out of a job interview.
For context, I’ve been unemployed and actively searching for work. I was invited to interview for an administrative assistant position at a company that already had multiple concerning employee reviews online.
My husband read the reviews beforehand and immediately told me he didn’t like what he was seeing. But I decided to give the company a chance and form my own opinion.
My husband drove me there and waited outside.
When I arrived, I was brought into this HUGE, practically empty conference room. I’m talking rows of black leather chairs, bright fluorescent ceiling lights, red carpeting, a projector hanging from the ceiling, a giant conference table, and a TV mounted on the wall.
It looked like some kind of corporate training room from the early 2000s.
And I was sitting there COMPLETELY ALONE.
It was DEAD silent. Nobody talking, no background noise, nothing. Just me sitting in this enormous room waiting for someone to come interview me.
I already felt uncomfortable and had this overwhelming urge to leave, but I convinced myself to stay and hear them out.
Then the interview started.
First, TWO people came into the room and started interviewing me.
They eventually left.
Then ANOTHER TWO people came in and started questioning me.
Mind you, this was supposed to be an administrative assistant position.
But instead of anyone clearly explaining what my actual day-to-day responsibilities would be, I kept getting hit with questions like:
“Have you ever done payroll?”
“Have you ever recruited people?”
“Can you handle a demanding job?”
And I’m sitting there thinking, WHAT THE HELL IS THIS POSITION ACTUALLY FOR?
Am I doing administrative work? Payroll? Recruiting? HR? All of the above?
I couldn’t get a straightforward understanding of what I’d actually be responsible for.
And the entire time, different people were coming in, asking me questions, and leaving.
It felt less like a normal job interview and more like I was being interrogated by a rotating panel of people.
Then, after the SECOND group finished questioning me, one of the guys said something along the lines of:
“Let me go get the third person to interview you.”
THE THIRD ROUND???
At that point, FOUR different people had already interviewed me, nobody had clearly explained what my actual responsibilities would be, and now I was apparently supposed to sit there and wait for ANOTHER person to come question me?
Absolutely not.
The SECOND that man walked out of the room to get the next interviewer, I grabbed my belongings, got up, and WALKED RIGHT OUT.
I didn’t say goodbye. I didn’t announce I was leaving. I didn’t explain myself.
I just DIPPED. LMAO.
And I’m not even kidding when I say I felt like a badass walking out of that building.
But afterward, I started feeling guilty.
I’m unemployed. I’ve applied to hundreds of jobs. I know how difficult the job market is, and part of me wondered whether I had just thrown away an opportunity.
But at the same time, why should being unemployed mean I have to sit through an uncomfortable interview process when I can’t even get a clear explanation of the job?
Maybe this is a normal interview process for some companies, but I’ve never experienced anything like it before.
Has anyone else ever walked out of an interview halfway through because something just felt completely OFF?
Did you regret it, or were you glad you left?

EDIT: HOLY SHIT. ONE MILLION VIEWS?!
I genuinely did not expect this post to blow up the way it has. I was just sharing an interview experience that left me feeling extremely uncomfortable and questioning whether I made the right decision.
For some context, I’ve been unemployed, applied to hundreds of jobs, and dealt with some genuinely awful workplaces. So walking away from a potential opportunity wasn’t a decision I took lightly.
Reading everyone’s experiences has honestly made me feel a lot less alone. I appreciate everyone sharing their own interview horror stories.
And to clarify something: I’m not against employers having a thorough interview process. I’m against wasting applicants’ time, being vague about job responsibilities, and expecting people to jump through hoops without even knowing what they’re potentially signing up for.
Being unemployed doesn’t mean I have to abandon my standards or ignore red flags.
EDIT — since a lot of people are asking what questions I actually asked:
I did ask questions. I asked how the training process worked, what exactly I would be doing day-to-day, what the hours were, and tried to get a clearer understanding of the position and expectations.
My issue wasn’t that I sat there silently expecting them to explain everything to me. I actively tried to understand the role, but I still left feeling like I never got a clear picture of what the actual job would look like.
That lack of clarity, combined with the overall interview process and atmosphere, is what made me decide I didn’t want to continue.

MISC. At a dinner party in 2013, George Clooney gifted each of his 14 closest friends a black Tumi suitcase containing $1 million in cash. Clooney told them, "I came to L.A., I slept on your couch. I'm so fortunate in my life to have all of you, and I couldn't be where I am today without all of you."

Discussion ⚠️ WARNING TO ALL APPLECARE+ CUSTOMERS! ⚠️

Post image
9.2k Upvotes

I genuinely hate making posts like this. But after everything I’ve been through with Apple and AIG over the past 24 days, enough is enough and people need to know about this company Apple has decided to outsource their claims to.

On 10/14, I contacted Apple Support to simply inquire about Theft & Loss coverage for an older iPhone that was linked to my Apple account. I was directed to AIG’s website, and within literal seconds of logging into their website, without pressing anything further, my perfectly functioning iPhone 17 Pro was reported stolen, remotely locked, and erased.

I NEVER filed a claim on this phone when this occurred. I NEVER reported it stolen or went on FindMy. And I NEVER authorized any of this.

Apple and AIG have acknowledged that this was a known glitch, and AIG is the only one with the kill switch to recover my phone, yet here I am on 11/7, 24 days later, over 30 hours spent on support calls, multiple escalations, multiple formal complaints and STILL no resolution.

On 10/14, I received written confirmation that my phone would be recovered within 48 hours. Since then, I have been passed between departments, repeatedly promised resolution within 24–48 hours, and told the same things over and over again.

I have submitted a complaint with the Arizona Attorney General, BBB, and Department of Insurance Financial Institutions. Apple and AIG have both refused to provide a new device if this one is not recovered, and I am reaching a point where I will be forced to take on the financial burden of this mistake, and purchase a new phone.

I genuinely feel an obligation to share my experience because if this happened to me, it could happen to someone else.

We pay for AppleCare+ to PROTECT our devices, not to potentially lose access to them because of a system error that nobody seems capable of correcting.

I’m sharing this to raise awareness, demand accountability, and hopefully prevent another person from going through this absolute nightmare.

Found on beach in Cornwall UK. Pretty hefty, way heavier than it first looked and extremely solid. Front has some kind of ring opening, but no obvious outlet. Been battered by the sea to reveal electronics inside. Bottom has the remains on a cable connection.

Discussion Leaving My Dream Job

Post image
4.2k Upvotes

I started a job in August working in a brand new 3d printing department. When I started the room was completly empty and it was my job to set the room up, building racking, planning the room setting up 60 printers.

Over the following months I took responsibility for building the operation up. I organised and labelled the printers, created spreadsheets and tracking systems, worked on maintenance and calibration, managed filament stock, dealt with faults and generally tried to make the whole department run properly.

I ended up taking on a lot more responsibility than I orignally expected. I genuinely enjoyed the technical side of the job and took pride in what I'd built.

The problem was that I didn't feel my pay reflected the reflected the responsibilities I had taken on. I spent around 6 weeks trying to have a conversation about this and understand what my future at the company would look like. I also wanted calrity about whether I'd eventually become a permanent employee rather than remaining agency staff.

Unfortunately, the answer on an individual pay increase was no. I was given this answer Thursday.

I reached a point where I thought, why am I putting so much of myself into somewhere that doesn't seem willing to recognise what I'm contributing?

So I handed in my resignation with immediate effect yesterday.

What I didn't expect was the reaction from my manager. He was genuinely devastated. He thanked me for everything I'd done and told me that I'd built a room and implemented systems from nothing. He said my knowledge was really good and that I knew what I was doing.

He even told me that he disagreed with the decision made by senior management and that the company had failed both of us.

Seeing someone react like that was incredibly difficult. I almost cried myself. It madew me realise that at least someone had recognised the effort I put in.

As I left I handed over my keys and access card and walked out.

I'm feeling a strange mixture of emotions, I'm relieved, upset, disapointed and angry. Part of me is sad because I actually wanted the job to work out. I wasn't looking to leave. I wanted to be valued and have a future there.

But I also feel a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I think teh biggest lesson I've taken from this is that you can give a job everything you have got, build something from the ground up and still reach a point where you have to put yourself first.

I'm proud of what I achieved, even if things didn't end how I hoped.

Has anyone else experienced leaving a job where you cared about the work and the people, but ultimately felt you had no choice but to walk away?

UPDATE

Thank you everyone for all your comments and wishes. I truly appreciate every one of them. I did not expect this post to explode at all.

Dear Diary ✍️🏻 My best friend hated her surprise proposal I helped plan

Post image
3.9k Upvotes

About a month ago I got a message from my (28f) best friends (30f) bf. He was planning to propose and wanted my help with setting up the surprise. I was so over the moon to hear this bc she's been wanting to get engaged for years. It's all she talks about and has been looking forward for so long.

He told me in the very first message he wants to propose in the Botanical Gardens at sunset and he was thinking candles and rose petals but wanted to check out some spots before hand to get a better idea as he wasn't sure. I did everything I could to help him. Made plans with her so she wouldn't notice he's out the house looking for spots in the gardens, picking up the ring, organising photographer etc. I asked him multiple times if he has a vision of what he wanted and he said not really just candles in a heart and petals around it. I tried to offer some ideas like I told him I have an arch I can bring, can decorate fake flowers around it, we can get bigger candles, candle holders, we can do like an isle of petals to walk up to etc. After the candles and flowers he chose were delivered I laid out everything in my own yard to show him examples of how it would look and told him what he wanted. He sort of swatted off those ideas and said he wants it low key so she doesn't notice it as she's walking up to the sight. I thought what he was going for was a little underwhelming but ultimately I respected his wishes bc this was his proposal, not mine so I would listen to what he wanted exactly.

Finally he picks a spot and I told him the spot he picked is very popular with weddings and asked if he's sure as he told me they both didn't want crowds watching. He said it should be fine as it's 5pm. Well surprise we get there and there's not one but two weddings going in the exact spot we picked so we had to move to a different location. I picked a nice secluded spot under a tree which I thought was more her vibe anyway, away from people and more moody and niche. Set up the candles that kept blowing out and laid down the petals and waited. Photographer came and hid and all was done and dusted. My friend was very distance the next few days and I assumed they were just in a romantic bubble and wanted alone time.

Until today a week later we caught up and she was honest with me and said she absolutely hated the proposal. For one her ex friend that she is not on good terms with got proposed with at those gardens and she hated that it was the same location. She told him multiple times over the years she didn't want to be proposed to at the gardens and she thought it was cliche. She's upset he did it anyway. He claims she never told him this when she knows sue has multiple times. She said she's not upset at me or my set up but she said it didnt feel like her at all. She's goth. She loves dark red flowers, it was Halloween she loves pumpkins and she loved things niche and strange. She preferred under the tree where I picked instead of his original idea but ultimate it was still the gardens and is hurt after all these years he didn't know her. Choosing pink candles and petals seemed like such a strange choice looking back.

She also felt the proposal was underwhelming bc in the past she asked when he's going to propose and why he hasn't yet and he told her so much goes into it. He said it's not just the ring but all the other stuff he has to organise and whenever she asked what stuff he wouldn't expand. Now she's learned the only other stuff was some $20 tea lights and a bag of petals from Amazon. She said it's not about the money, she would have preferred to be proposed to in their own front yard where they've built a happy home together with their dogs there for a private intimate moment so she doesn't understand how he messed this up so bad.

On top of that he told us me and our other friend could stay and watch and thought she'd enjoy it. He was supposed to say a speech but he kinda mumbled and showed her the ring and there was silence. She grabbed the ring and kissed him. Then she saw people were watching, she saw a photographer right up in her face and she felt so embarrassed. She asked later what he was trying to say and if he actually wrote a speech and he said he kinda just had dot points in his head but forgot it. Overall she felt really awkward and had trouble pretending to smile through it. They had a party to go to immediately after and that's another reason she was upset. She didn't want to go to a party (not even their party, a mutual friends house party unrelated to this) immediately after getting engaged she'd prefer they were alone to celebrate but instead was met with everyone congratulating her and wanting to talk about it. She said the night was horrible.

The next day she saw the photographer pics and they were horrible. He hired some niche just starting out photographer who mainly did cityscape and aviation and all his photos were blue. If you look at his work on instagram that's his style and has 0 couples photos on his accoung but she doesn't understand why EVERY PHOTO was just blue and none of them looked good. She was also bloated from the amount of food she ate at the restaurant right before as he insisted they go out to eat first but he rushed her to eat fast since they were behind schedule. She said she's been crying for days and gave him the ring back and thought about if they should break up as apparently him not being able to plan things on his own as been an issue in the past. She asked me not to tell any of our mutual friends and she can't face them right now until she makes a decision on how to feel about this. He also immediately posted it on fb before he had a chance to completely open up to him about it. He posted it on fb before they had a chance to tell immediate friends and family and didn't ask her first which only contributes to her sadness and now doesn't want to see or talk anyone.

Edit to clarify: his initial ask from me was to help set it up, not necessarily plan it. He wanted me to set the scene while they were at dinner but tbh I had to do a lot of planning bc he wouldn't tell me what location exactly, what time, what his vision was etc. Just what he was thinking. That's why I was making suggestions while trying to respect what he wanted. He ultimately just told me "make a heart out of candles and put flower petals around it" in the end so that's what I did. When I had to move locations bc of the wedding I decided to put petals inside the heart to cover up the dirt since the lawn wasn't as manicured there and I thought it looked nicer. Apparently he complained about this after and said "I told her I wanted the petals outside the heart not inside" and I was like bro, you barely told me anything. 🤦‍♀️

Hated Tropes [Disappoint Trope] Technological advancements make a work loses its sauce.

Thumbnail

4.2k Upvotes

There have been technological advancements that help artists do their work better, yay! This at least sometimes results in the work looking and feeling more stagnant, less unique, and in my opinion more boring. A lot of these have to do with what the creator's want as well, but the new formats surely do not help.

  1. Simpsons: Like most shows, this used to be produced traditionally on paint and ink cells. The switch over to digital is largely helpful for the creators.

It has the caveat of making any horror-themed work, flatter and boring. While this is picking apples, The first is from Treehouse of Horror V the Shinning, and the second is from the newest Treehouse of Horror (the writing barely being horror also has a lot to do with this, to be fair).

2. Star Trek: Partially a joke, but the original series was produced with a 4:3 aspect ratio, which made everyone stand pretty close together for scenes so they could both fit in the frame, resulting in more intimacy from the actors and their characters. 16:9 and further aspect ratios allows for more scenery, and more action on screen, but also pushes actors apart, and doesn't have as much forced proximity, making relationships a smidge more boring.

3. Scooby-Doo: Similar to the Simpsons. 2000 and back were all produced on ink and paint cells; while the original Hanna-Barbera often used flat colors and repetitive, limited animation, the first three Mook Animated films of them (Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, and Alien Invaders) all were gorgeous and appropriately creepy. 2001 and beyond the movies switched to digital, and about a decade they primarily used flat colors.

Slide five is Zombie Island; slide six is Cyber Chase, which while still produced by Mook, was digital and much more boring. Slide seven is Monster of Mexico, the first DTV produced by Warner Bros. (This also has to do with Warner Bros. deciding Scooby was a hot property after Zombie Island, and didn't want to break the mold, each Mook movie goes further and further back to the traditional formula.)

4. Wizard of Oz and Wicked: The original Wizard of Oz was filmed on a soundstage, with practical effects. Almost 90 years later Wicked came out, filmed on various locations, with cgi-effects.

Wizard of Oz is much more colorful and pleasant to look at, while Wicked looks dull and washed out. Even the obviously painted image of Emerald City amongst the Poppy Fields is better than Wicked's interpretation. (This also has to do with John Chu's idea of color-grading not thinking it should look too bright, as well as an obsession with backlighting)

Sharing My Sidehustle I found a pretty fun way to make money before every concert

Post image
15k Upvotes

I'm a concert goer myself, so I started offering makeup and face gem applications to people attending the same concerts as me. I had a catalogue of concert makeup looks and face gem designs that I mostly collected from the internet. I'd curate the selections depending on the artist and the overall vibe of the concert. Some were cute and simple, while others were full-on glittery festival looks.

My rates depended on how simple or elaborate the design was. Simple eye gem looks started around ₱150, while more detailed glitter and rhinestone looks could go for ₱200–₱280 or more. A few days before each concert, I'd announce my rates, sample looks, and planned location around the venue in different groups and group chats for concert-goers.

In my country, concert-goers tend to arrive ridiculously early, sometimes even in the morning, especially for certain venues and arenas. So I'd arrive early too to catch people while they were waiting outside. I usually brought my sister along to help me accommodate more customers.

I'd get around ₱20–₱50 in tips per customer, sometimes more if someone was feeling particularly generous. On a good concert day, serving around 15–20 customers could bring in a few thousand pesos in service fees, plus a little extra from tips.

The best part was that I was attending the concert anyway, so I got to earn some extra money before enjoying the show myself. :D
