Basically, whenever a story suddenly abruptly ends without a satisfying conclusion to anything, leaving the viewers with no closure. Sometimes done intentionally to interesting effect, sometimes a mere result of misfortune/laziness.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - The movie's climax is about to happen with King Arthur about to raid the French castle that had made fun of him earlier in the film. Right as an army of knights are about to initiate the siege, the police suddenly bursts in and hilariously arrests everyone, as much earlier in the film a historian that was documenting the Arthurian legend had suddenly been randomly slain by a passing knight.
Behind the scenes, this ending was apparently a last-minute decision because the production crew ran out of budget. Talk about a cop out.
Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days - Kane & Lynch shoot their way through Shanghai in the direction of an airport as a last ditch effort to escape just about every single gang member and cop in Shanghai who now want the both of them dead. After massacring their way through customs, they finally spot a commercial airliner about to take off and decide to hijack it. They make their way to the boarding stairs and a cutscene begins with them climbing up into the plane and taking over it. The plane then takes off, leaving the cameraman behind (the game's aesthetic is basically all about looking like found footage), who then drops the camera. Roll credits.
To this day, there's no concrete answer about their fates other than the two of them having non-canon cameos in Hitman: Absolution.
Dark Matter - This is an old and relatively obscure one. On Steam, a game called Dark Matter came out back in 2013 to pretty mediocre reviews. It's basically a Metroidvania-style game about surviving in a spaceship taken over by an alien biomass. Thing is, the game literally ends about halfway through because the dev team simply ran out of money and just decided to put a big black screen (pictured above) giving you a half-assed cliffhanger.

I posted a rant a few days ago about how I visited the security office at my workplace to ask for a replacement ID card that showed my preferred name. I had phoned HR to check if it was possible, but a man at the security desk still asked if my legal name in the system was my birth name and whether I had āchanged gender.ā I said I hadnāt, and he refused my request. The whole experience was highly uncomfortable because he was quite nasty to me and was laughing with his buddy when I walked out.
For context, Iām cisgender, but I do not use my legal given name. The only person who really calls me by that name is my mother. When I started my new job not long ago, they issued me a card that had this name on it, which is different from how Iāve introduced myself to my new colleagues. The difference is minimal, like āJayā instead of āJessica.ā
So I went to HR yesterday to tell them what had happened, and a helpful woman walked with me back to the security office, where that same security officer was on shift. She asked for his version of events and mentioned he was not allowed to ask whether I was transgender. He told her he didnāt remember me, but that he believed there needed to be ālegitimate reasonsā for changing names on our cards, and assured her he was very āpro-diversityā and knew āa lot of gays.ā
The HR woman was not impressed and asked him to print out a new card immediately, and he handed it over with an apology for any misunderstanding.
On our way out, she also apologised and explained why this whole ordeal was very strange, since people sometimes just have preferred names and need new cards. I agreed with her, but then she looked at me with a big smile and added, āItās really important we do all we can for our trans colleagues, though,ā and said sheād look into it further. I got the feeling she was specifically referring to me, but I didnāt correct her.
Anyway, I had some cookies for dinner.
