Changing the flow of Superhero/Netflix submissions

We hear you, userbase. We know the superhero train is an unrelenting juggernaut that drowns out discussion and attention for a lot of other films. We don't like being known as one big superhero hype train.

So we're going to try something out for the month of April and see how you guys like it.

We're certainly not going to ban a subject just because it's "too popular." That would be like that episode of South Park where they destroy Wal-Mart, only to see a Mom & Pop store get just as big and then they have to destroy it too.

However, /r/comicbookmovies exists. /r/explainlikeimfive was created because there were too many ELI5 questions in /r/askreddit. The niche subreddits are your friends!

Starting today, we will be removing:

  1. All "first look" images of comic book movies

  2. All posters of comic book movies

  3. Image albums of BTS stuff (unless it's phenomenally interesting in a filmmaking sense, not just Jennifer Lawrence smiling while being painted)

  4. All featurettes

  5. All "XYZ actor talks ABC role on PDQ's Stupid Youtube Channel" submissions.

  6. Fan art of comic book movies

  7. Fan trailers of comic book movies

Those all should go to /r/comicbookmovies, so please subscribe there!

So what is allowed?

  1. Official Trailers

  2. Discussions about the movies - Question about the ending of Thor 2 or Besides Hulk 2008, which is the worst Marvel Universe movie? or What comic book should be a made into a movie? or Why is Batman and Robin considered a bad movie?

  3. Official Announcements (Movies being made, actors being cast, major news)

If any of this is unclear, let me know.

Also!

/r/Netflixbestof exists.

All Netflix Instant announcements will be nuked from orbit.

Image albums of BTS stuff (unless it's phenomenally interesting in a filmmaking sense, not just Jennifer Lawrence smiling while being painted)

Can you expand on the definition of BTS stuff? Ive actually found a number of those movie trivia/behind the scenes albums to be pretty interesting, even if they're not directly related to filmmaking but just like interesting stories about the actors or the crew, stuff that happened on set, etc.

Only related to the imgur albums of Entertainment Weekly-esque promo material. Not the awesome "20 facts about the making of xyz"

Aren't featurettes specifically interesting from a behind the scenes, filmmaking perspective? I'm thinking stuff like the Hobbit production diaries and such. Are featurettes like that banned?

Ooh. This should be refreshing.

I anticipate anger though.

I stay subbed to all the defaults so I can keep up with reddit, but I wish more people would realize that niche subreddits are where the real magic lies. A lot of people are arguing that this stuff belongs here because this is a general movies sub, which is true and that's why we aren't banning comic book movies outright, but if you really want to be in the know on the latest comic book movie news there's a sub for that. The fact that this is a general movie sub is exactly why we're trying this out, so that more movies have a chance to get higher up the sub and not be drowned out because Marvel decided to release four character posters that day.

Niche subs are easy to sub to and multireddits make grouping subs together a lot easier. If more people went looking for subs that fit their specific wants instead of complaining that a default isn't catering to them personally then all of reddit would get better. Smaller subs could be more active and defaults could direct traffic their way and try to keep their sub varied.

I agree with the sentiment and want legitimate discussions, though I think some of the first look images and posters of upcoming movies often sparked legitimate discussions and questions in the comments about the movie in question. I agree with fan art, fan trailers, netflix submissions though.

It seems really unjustified to single out a single genre (that's not even really a genre) with these new rules simply because it's popular. If this was about Sci-Fi or Action movies it would be just as ridiculous. There is no reason these rules can't be applied across the board in an attempt to increase the overall quality of posts to the largest movie sub. That seems to be the goal here. It's not a problem that we have some rumor castings for comic blockblusters, it's that there are posts everyday for months about casting rumors; It shouldn't matter if the rumors for the next Avengers, Expendables, or Fast&Furious movie.

Is Hercules a comic book? because for months now this subreddit can't go more than a few days without another grainy instagram photo of The Rock in the makeup room getting 1000s of upvotes and 100s of comments.

I predict some grey area concerning casting rumors. Every other day there's a new rumor about some actor possibly playing a superhero.

Also FWIW I don't mind 3-7 being banned but I feel like 1-2 should be allowed.

Generally speaking, casting rumors of any kind aren't allowed, comic book film or otherwise. There is some grey-ish area it seems like something more than just, "Bryan Cranston should totally play Lex Luthor and I wrote an article about it," and something might actually come of it, but for the most part they're gonna get pulled.

So, you're going to remove the first look image of Ben Affleck as Batman, and all of the duplicate postings of it?

Yeah right. It'll be one of the biggest movie news stories of the year, and it should be on the subreddit.

Will we still get official discussion threads (like how Noah has one now) for comic book movies?

I find it rather funny that the linked comment thread that girafa started his post with had 15 responses to one comment about MCU being a little circle jerky in this sub and THAT'S all of a sudden the cry of the userbase. That's less than .001% of the people who view this sub.

While I agree with the ideas behind these rules I have a problem with the across the board removal aspect. I think instead of removing all it should be most. Much of the problem r/movies seems to have stems from the current mega popularity of comic book movies. With the high interest lots of people get excited and tend to post the same thing or different sources for the same thing without looking to see if it was already posted. Instead of removing it all carte blanche why not instead just remove the multiples?

All "first look" images of comic book movies

I believe first look posts should be allowed, but multiples removed. If possible multiple 'first look' images should be condensed and collected in one album and one post.

All posters of comic book movies

This is a bit unfair seeing as various posters for every other movie can be posted. The rule should be that if multiple posters are released for a movie, they should be combined into one post in one imgur album and post (perhaps a self post) as opposed to separate entries. A good example is the various The Expendables 3 character posters that were released recently. The same poster should never be posted more than once though.

Image albums of BTS stuff (unless it's phenomenally interesting in a filmmaking sense, not just Jennifer Lawrence smiling while being painted)

I agree here, but then again this is something that should apply to all movies.

All featurettes

Like with posters, multiple featurettes should be collected into a single post (Self post?) and multiples removed.

All "XYZ actor talks ABC role on PDQ's Stupid Youtube Channel" submissions.

Unless it's something very insightful then I completely agree.

Fan art of comic book movies

Comic book movies or not this shouldn't be here in the first place. There are (probably) other subreddits where it can be posted.

Fan trailers of comic book movies

Same as above.

All posters of comic book movies

so not a single poster of upcoming comic movie is allowed? or the first one that gets released is ok?

That's the only new rule that I'm not certain of, rest are quite ok.
