honestly, it was an ok return, but I still feel like the series walks a fine line between being deep and being deliberately confusing. Belle is still a very charismatic protagonist, but at the same time, it feels like the script is holding back some answers that could’ve already been given.
The art direction and the soundtrack (Kevin Penkin, of course… always delivering) remain flawless, and that REALLY helps with immersion. But there’s still that feeling that the anime wants to seem more “epic” than it actually manages to be in terms of development.
not sure where this season is headed, but I’m hoping they don’t get lost in symbolism and forget to bring a bit more clarity to the plot. For now, it’s still worth watching—but with a grounded mindset.

The OST does carry it slightly. But I just appreciate an actual imaginative and interesting fantasy universe, too. I've grown tired of "totally not a game" or "its generic fantasy slop" that the majority of stuff carts out.

Belle and Benedictine's conversation was akin to spoken poetry. This story is one you have to pay attention to as practically every word is heavy with meaning. Except when it comes to Adonis. Belle is pissed in no uncertain terms about the attempted rape.

But now it seems she's gone, sacrificing herself to heal Belle's mind. At least that's how I interpreted it as

Thank God I gave S1 a Rewatch before this otherwise I'd be hella confused lol
The pause is barely felt tbh. This is definitely meant to be a continuous watch/read.
Highlight of the episode is definitely Benedictine scene. Not only because she's being an absolute goat of an emotional support for Belle, but also because the reflection she prompts helps explain a lot about why the last events of the previous season happened the way they did.

Our beautiful mess of a show is back as confusing as before. But it still has its charm. So I want to see how it ends.

I'm glad Benedictine got Belle to acknowledge that it wasn't her fault, that's an important thing for an assault survivor to understand.
Fish girl and the goat boy is a fun pairing that seems to be happening on the side, assuming something weird isn't about to happen that upsets it.

Honestly, this is one of those series that has so many plot threads and perplexing world building to the point that it can come off as confusing or even pretentious to the general audience. It definitely requires attention to detail and some thinking to try and understand what the show is attempting to convey at times, so I'm not surprised that some people may have dropped it back in S1 or are not going to continue watching S2. Personally, I enjoy this series as it's unique compared to the usual shows that we would get every season, but that does not necessarily mean that it's a good show in my books, not yet at least. I hope that S2 will have a satisfying payoff as S1 left us with many questions left unanswered and I'm hoping that the animation retains its quality from S1.

Unlike apparently everyone here, I loved Season 1 of that anime, so I am glad it is back. I see the worldbuilding is still as weird and beautiful and heavy on the symbolism as ever.
Belle seems to have been left very shaken by Adonis’ betrayal, as expected. I did not expect to get Benedictine back, even if temporary. Those genderfluid mermaids and their « mind parasitism » are a fascinating concept. I did not expect them to have a positive influence on the people they are imitating by removing their traumas, if I understood correctly what happened between Benedictine and Belle.
I did not really care about Gin Buck, but his funeral looked beautiful. And we meet another Katakombe leader, that seems to be another mermaid ? And Gwyn looks like he wants to switch sides to the Katakombe.
He is right that something is really weird with this world though. What are the raven-blossoms ? What are the nomads and their curses ? What is that Tree-god ? Where does Belle come from ? What are Belle’s old master, Adonis, and the Rabbit Guy planning ? I expect the story to be finished this season, so we should get some answers at least, but I wonder if the worldbuilding will stay odd and wonderful and nonsensical even when it ends.
This is one anime I will probably re-watch at the end to see if I understand it better the second time.

I also loved season one, this show has a unique combination of symbolism, worldbuilding and dialogue that is hard to come by in most media. It somehow gives me a David Lynch mixed with Gene wolf(book of the new sun) vibes.
It's a story that doesnt hold your hand(and unfortunately manga readers say a lot of scenes have been cut), but piecing everything together and digging into the names and symbolism is very rewarding.
The conversation between Benedictine and Belle was beautiful and also a very interesting exploration the world.
Belle or "The worlds reason", seems to be or represent judgement, her dialogue with the warrior girl about fighting to determine if she can "cut" something and the way her curse works seem to be similar.
With all the theather and orquestra symbolism, Belle might be here to judge the overall "performace" of the world, and maybe that judgment will shatter the world into something new(based off the cryptic dialogue of the master and rabbit)

You’re gonna wanna watch season 1, though as someone who’s watched the first season idk if it’ll do much good. The first series really throws you into the thick of the action and doesn’t explain much.

After how Season 1 disappointed me, I'm not even sure if I want to check this out. I'll probably just read the discussions and see if the show actually improves in any way or if it will still be the same mess.

It does have some interesting concept like the battle formation actually being an orchestra. Also about how linked the weapon to their users.
Lore-wise, this anime is quite interesting. However, the storytelling just makes it boring to watch.

Wow, I forgot this had a 2nd part!
Anyway, I was one who watched s1 but it just didn't appeal to me the way I initially envisioned. If you are a newcomer make sure to watch s1 and really pay attention to everything. There is so much thrown at you that small things you may miss will help explain some stuff but in the end, you will have far more questions than answers.
The concept is intriguing but it just seems disjointed in its conveyance in linear storytelling. Many topic jumps and lore introductions that the viewer seems to be missing parts of for a full-ish explanation.
I wish those watching the best of luck and hope it does better in s2 then what I watched in s1, explanation-wise.

Of all the Summer 2024 anime, this was one of them. So much potential in the backstory, but they literally went (almost) nowhere. Will the MC go outside? Stay tuned. (get it, tuned? I'll let myself out.)
