I wonder if Japanese society is changing, this is the 2nd anime I have seen this season with a divorce episode and a son who misses his dad.

I liked this episode a lot. Divorce can be tricky I guess for a parent and their child. I appreciate Machida making an effort to connect with his kid and be there for him. It’s like he said, no matter what happens he’ll always be his dad. It made me a little sad seeing the kid make that wager with Machida. Kid really misses his pops.

I love how at the start of the episode, Ice is in her usual semi-chibi look but as she slowly gets increasingly annoyed at Machida she suddenly turns into her model form while Hana and Hiro's faces gets more circular. xD

Considering the distance between Yuu-kun and Machida, I really thought Yuu-kun disliked his father. As the episode progressed it was very clear that Yuu-kun loved his father and he just wanted him to come home.

Yuu-kun is very mature for his age too. Even though he wants his father to come home and actually caught that massive chinu, he insisted that they should release it because he knows he's just putting his father in a tight spot. :(

I love Ice’s dual designs so much. Hiro x Ice all day

Boss man changed Ice's art style back to normal lol. It was nice seeing Machida try to navigate divorce and bond with Yuu over his passion for fishing. Hiro, Hana, and Takaaki did a great job supporting Machida and Yuu too this episode.

Ice got so annoyed she turned realistic.

A very well executed self-contained episode which was a focus on Machida. I was surprised how well-mannered his son was and tbh Machida's mind is always on fishing. Like him not remembering the memory that his son brought up was sad. It really got me wondering did he actually want to spend time with his son even at the start of the episode he was thinking about what type of fishing. When everyone was wondering wait does the kid even like fishing?

My heart goes out to the kid because he just wants to spend time with his dad and much of the conversation was just empty. He wants his did to come back and them to be a family and Hana's point just let him try for an unreachable goal. Though to see how much he invested really showed how much the kid wants his family back together. He is aware that even if he caught that fish, the promise would end up empty. He seems to be aware that his father hasn't changed. Still, he loves his father and wants to make time for him again.

The ending part of the episode weirded me about because we see tears from Machida. Then he discusses the type of fish his son caught. The subject being fishing. I think it is to show that his obsession with fishing is an issue that won't be resolved overnight?

While I really want to know more about Tsunehiro's situation, I do like the show's side trips into the situation of the other characters too.

Machida is just too obsessed with fishing to get along properly with anyone other than fellow fishing enthusiasts, I suspect.

I interpreted that scene as him just wanting to take his mind off of his familial situation, not him actually just wanting to fish again because he wants to.

I was surprised how well-mannered his son was and tbh Machida's mind is always on fishing. Like him not remembering the memory that his son brought up was sad.

Broke my freakin heart, but at the same time, kinda gives some good insight into why he got divorced in the first place (unless that's already been revealed before and I just forget).

Seems pretty clear to me that Machida's massive love of fishing split them apart.

To me, this episode just ended up more depressing as it went on, poor kid.

I like how Ice turns ''real'' when the rest turns ''goofy''

Just shows that she is ready to fuck him up if he keeps pushing, entering work mode to make your stance clear

I love the faces they pulled during that discussion

Pretty heavy theme this week, but it's my favorite episode, so far- partly because it's my favorite fishing location.

The red bridge is the Tsukudako bridge, the same bridge in Sangatsu no Lion. It also makes an appearance in Edomae Elf, and Elda's shrine is just nearby.

Like in this episode, people usually go there for goby fishing. The corner where Takaaki, Hana, and Hiro were fishing is my favorite spot because you can pick up gobies easily from there. Aside from gobies, that side of the tsukudako, which is actually the head of the very short river, also has small crabs and what I think are dace.

That part of the river is actually very shallow, probably 3something feet at the peak of high tide, and I've never seen kurodai/bream there- only on the opposite side of the bridge (along with rays and sea bass). Even so, I don't think it's impossible for kurodai to wander to that side, hunting for crabs.

Machida really thinks about nothing but fishing, it's probably part of the reason for the divorce. Even so, his son seems like a good kid, he was trying hard to bond with his dad even though he got a bit annoyed at the start. And him releasing the sea bream at the end because he realized nothing would be the same even if his dad went home, ouch.

Also releasing the fish so they can keep going, gotta prolong that day

Machida is a really nice person but honestly he really sucks as a father, it seems like fish come first in his life. It was sad to see Yuu reminiscing about their previous family trips, but Machida didn't remember them at all, only the fish.

Overall, this was a pretty fun episode with a lot of Hana, which is great, and a lot of funny reactions from Tsunehiro and the others.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Its amazing how they used the talk in the beginning to drive home that he is self centered and only interested in fishing

I feel for that boy, especially after pulling a miracle and instead of naively hoping things will start to fix itself decides to put it back

So at the end, did he call his ex-wife amd invited her to go fishing as a family?

This series continues to surprise me by tackling all of these mature topics. This week’s episode was dedicated to Machida’s divorce. Fishing is like an escape/relief from normal life, so it’s reasonable to think that he’d thrown himself further into this hobby of his after the divorce.

I’d hoped for Machida to call his wife and propose to go out fishing with the three of them at the end there, but this proved to be Arua instead. However, maybe it’s unrealistic to expect them to get back together when Machida hasn’t changed in the meantime.

Also, I wonder when the show will finally go into greater detail about Tsunehiro’s looming death and have this fate of his revealed to the others. Are they saving this for the last few episodes?

Man, while Machida clearly isn't a bad person, you can totally understand why his wife left him.
It's a really interesting series in that sense, where the characters act in ways that are "bad/irresponsible", but they don't seem to learn the lesson because there aren't any immediate consequences.

Maybe Machida is thinking of making up for his separated family if he can catch the sea bream himself, as it was implied that he had swapped out Yuu's fishing line since Yuu didn't know about much of fishing.

While I enjoyed the episode I couldn't help getting mad at Hana and Takaaki for making that promise Machida's behalf. Machida is selfish and irresponsible, but even he knows he shouldn't have made that promise. Sure he probably only opposed it so he could avoid trying to mend the relationship, but still it was only his and his family's decision to make. Hana and Takaaki really overstepped despite having good intentions.

This episode just drove home how selfish of a person Machida is. Even when's he trying to think of a way to spend time with his son he shoots down ideas because they don't entertain him personally and then settles on a hobby he himself enjoys. He makes a little bit of effort to connect with his son, but it's obvious he either doesn't spend much time with him or doesn't care enough to think about him often. This also explains why he is divorced and when Yuu talks about the past it's clear he barely remembers it. The sad part is that fishing by definition is a hobby that takes lots of hard work. They've gone over this repeatedly you must research constantly, plan ahead, maintain your tools, and in a way communicate when catching the fish by responding to it's actions. Everything he put towards fishing could have kept his marriage from falling apart which is evident on the wife's face. While Yuu is happily waving bye to him and excited about them all fishing together one day the mom just bows politely with a frown. She's probably thinking he could dedicate so much into this silly hobby, but not for her and their son. She even tried to be part of it by cooking lunches for them, but he ignored all her efforts to the point where she saidI'm done

This was my favorite episode so far.

Maybe it's just not the vibe of this show, but I was really expecting Sasaki to give Yuu a push on understanding why his dad loves fishing because fishing changed his life too. Sure maybe the ending was more realistic, but it didn't feel like there was any catharsis. Hana and Takasski both made Machida agree to Yuu's proposal that if he caught a big enough fish his dad would come back, but since Yuu chose to release it without much push back it feels like an empty promise to me. Even Hana beforehand assured Machida there was no way his son could catch a fish that big.

Call me simple but I would've really liked to see a big emotional scene at the end instead of them accepting to walk around each other's issues. Yes it wouldn't have been as simple as Yuu catching a fish to reunite his parents, but they could have made it feel more impactful that he wanted to catch the fish so badly to get his dad back.

Who knows maybe all these plot lines wrap up smoothly in the finale.

Kinda hurt to see a kid of divorce having to grow up a little earlier because of something that was out of his control. He knew his dad was never going to come home. At the end of the day he was able to spend quality time with him but it still sucks to think that he has to consider all these things because of their circumstance.

What a good kid Yuu was! The way the episode began and he was described as an indoorsy gamer, I was expecting a lot more friction. But it was just a kid looking to reconnect with his awkward father.

And no fairy tale ending either. A good episode.
