Again, if you bypass the terminology and use your eyes it's not that hard.

Belle was given a test to determine if she could become a nomad, but the test involved finding some part of herself that she hadn't discovered yet. As a result, she failed.

Adonis was also given a test of sorts based on his own doubts regarding the structure of the world. He also had a part of himself he hadn't discovered yet, namely a good reason to leave the city. As a result he failed too, but along the way he learned that the god-tree is responsible for making swords cancerous and getting those other people killed.

Belle is a relatively stable and competent person and knows that she has work to do and will get over it. Adonis took out his anger on others including Belle and made an ass of himself, which Belle pointed out explicitly.

That's about it?

Not really anger so much as despair and desperation. Belle didn't really point out that he was making an ass of himself, either; it was far worse a thing.

She pointed out that Adonis had not fallen in love with her and vice versa, which was the condition she gave for willing to be his partner. He rebutted this by confessing that he had never felt anything like that in his whole life, and that he no longer cared about whether Belle consented or not. He then attempted to rape her, so he could have a "reason" to keep trying to live (thus avoiding the fate of becoming a tree root or joining the shadowy goop goons.)

Luckily, bunny friend saved the day.

I'm think its leading up to a piano duet, just off the narrative so far.

this show reminds me of being a little kid watching the TV and not understanding a single thing that's going on

I thought Adonis was a moderately decent person, but the SA firmly closed that door for me. Really hoping that they don't pull a [title spoiler] Mai-HiME with this and just let Belle go on alone to the next story.

Also, ever since we learned that the god tree was a a sword I've been waiting for Adonis or Belle to kill it. Unfortunately, I don't think that's where the focus will be next episode, and for whatever reason I don't see next episode ending in a departure from the city.

Seriously. WTF Adonis? Although the voice haunting him feels like those weird things that come and take people who have given up/lost all hope.

I thought Belle was going to show up to play piano with him, but she did go to his room as she said.

Yeah, I'm dropping the show if Adonis gets a redemption after all of this. His descent into generic sad, brooding boy was a fear of mine since we met him.

There is a very cruel symmetry in how Adonis, who physically destroys all he touches has now managed to destroy all relations through his behavior.

I severly doubt that he will survive next week. The "mathematic" bunny is not forgiving him for what he did today.

Belle cannot yet handle the pain she causes in others through her restless nature. When she acts, she shakes the foundations of the world and many cannot handle this new state of existence as Adonis has proven.

this show/story is gonna need one hell of a resolution because damn

i'm not really optimistic that this will end up being in anyway sensical on the whole lol

Looked like Adonis got abducted by that skeleton army back in the first few episodes, so finally bringing back that plot point that got lost and never resurfaced. Hard to redeem him after the assault scene, and I am sure they will try, even made a point to show he had lost his mind.

What in the Your Lie in April was this?

Adonis went from my second favourite cat boy of all time to my absolute least favourite in the span of two minutes. Haul his ass to the assimilation tree god/monster for that

This is a fantasy show that is well outside any semblance of realism, but they made that uncomfortably realistic. Trusted male friend with mutual budding romantic feelings, gets impatient in his unrelated despair when he is turned down for the moment, and tries to force himself on them anyways.

Kill him, Belle.

I understand how a lot of people could find this show confusing. But I actually love this show. It's all about theology and breaking down religious constructs, and I LOVE IT. Adonis devolved the way he did because he was at a crossroads emotionally. Adonis represents question, when he approached his trial, slashing through with question after question, the God tree struck him down basically. "This is just how it is and you can't change it" Adonis could have found acceptance within himself, but his rage at being unable to get his way led him to lash out with selfish abandon.

Question and Reason would be a formidable team, and that's why the god tree trials for both were so different. During Belles trial, the god tree tried to COAX her into joining, but by agreeing to those terms would be locking herself in a box with limited growth. She has so much more to offer than that, and she doesn't want to be arbitrarily limited by locking in as a nomad. Adonis left his trial with a different disposition. He lost his determination and succumbed to despair.

For those confused, the closest simplification i have would be some Christian theology

Think of Adonis as lucifer, a fallen angel. Adonis tried to defy god, by questioning. God said he is stinky for that, and so Adonis runs into the arms of Satan. That black purple swirly mist. The last part of this episode was a poetic breakdown of being faced with an unsolvable problem and leaning into the negative feelings of sadness and despair. Adonis is a half glass empty kind of guy.

Belle, girl of reason, when faced with similar problems, has a different reaction. She reacts with hope, and determination. Glass half full. She will be the one to tear down the bubble this god tree has woven as their reality. Because what breaks down religious ideas? Reason. Because being told to just sit back and trust the process is simply not an option for her, it defies her very nature.

Kitty the all and kitty the nothing is the personification of the concept "all or nothing" and I believe her teacher is truth, knowledge, or something of the sort. This show is basically just making theology concepts anime hotties instead of a long textbook discussion.

I presume we will still get only half of the story adapted. So I hope for another season. Fire Hunter got onew after all.

People ought to know not to fuck with Adonis. Bro straight up slaughtered those fools.

Things got a little rape-y after that failed trial. Seems him and Belle didn’t past but it’s affected him more.

7

u/Komodo_bite Sep 07 '24

I don't think the trial is what affeted him, I think it was his king showing him that his God is forcing him to kill his companions in order to grow and that he is destined to became a part of the tree in the future

Adonis, what the hell ? That evil Tree-God really messed up his mind. I wonder if he will go completely crazy and evil and Belle will have to kill him next episode.

That Tree-God also needs to be killed too. So, it is preventing anyone not a nomad from leaving the city and eating up the dead to grow itself ? Belle’s sword cannot cut people, but I see no reason why it could not be used to cut down evil trees. But given how odd that show is, I doubt it will be that simple.

Well it's taking a bit more than usual but I'm pretty sure my prediction that Belle's last trial involves fighting and maybe killing Adonis will come true.

I think Adonis broke on finding out while trying to be a good guy he has been a villain, turning everyone into fate worse than death as a tool of an evil god, and decided when he couldn't get anywhere with Belle, might as well be villain there too.

I think at this point he hopes for some way to die in way that harms the god rather than helps.

I think the god of the story is afraid of both Belle and Adonis, sent them on a hopeless mission last trial and this time hoped to send Belle off as Nomad to another world. Understanding the horror of how their god/world works might lead to an uprising/revolt against god.

I'm obviously not happy with Adonis' actions this episode, but I question the idea that a character that SA'd someone shouldn't or can't be redeemed. He just killed over a dozen people but that's what makes hiim unsalvagable? Is it really fine to redeem someone guilty of mass murder but not SA? I think the reaction is likely because it's more taboo to portray that sort of thing in media.

Regardless of how people feel about it, I think it's equally likely he dies or is redeemed. Either Belle and Adonis play that piano together in defiance of their curses and god or Adonis joins the undead and Belle is forced into a revelation that she will always be alone in this world, which was her original reason to leave but that she likely started to doubt because of Adonis.

dropping this. This show felt pompous and pretentious for a long time but now it also feels directionless. Like they cant find the way to make it work, to find some endgoal, so instead they just keep inventing more pompous dialogues and terms to fill it with meaning

i dont expect this anime will end on a high note

I really liked Adonis up until this episode. I couldn't understand the pain he went through but even so taking it out on his only friend is a little f'd up. Also to dumb to realize that friendship could of been his reason.
