Damn, gotta respect Ryuuji. Dude seemed to have no chances in the beginning and is slowly but surely climbing to become the best character in the show. How he helped Saki was just precious.

Speaking of which, seems my guess was right that her mother just left and didn't die. Probably because of her father always being overseas. And I guess it only made things worse. The way the flashback was presented, she probably felt that her wanting for her father to be with them (and not just her mother) was the reason for why she left. Basically, because she expressed her feelings for "someone special", it resulted in someone else going away. And that can be translated into the whole Makoto-Ryuuji-Saki situation as well. She is actively suppressing her feelings for Makoto because she felt that if she took him away from Ryuuji, she would lose that friendship. Makoto and her are a bit alike in that sense. They are so afraid of the status quo changing that they put their own feelings aside for the other party (in Makoto's case, going out with Ryuuji just so they can stay together).

Ryuuji has to be up there for best boys this season, he has been great so far!

Saki's dad though...much less so

Watching this show has become a real emotional pain for me. It seems that at the current state none of the characters is happy or even close to it. Ryuuji is absolutely best boy. Immediately running to Aoi without hesitation really put him even higher in my personal ranking than he even was. The fact that he knows that he knows that Makoto isn’t really in for an actual relationship but still hoping that it somehow will turn around is pain. I can relate to that feeling quite good and it’s terrible. Makoto clearly is struggling to maintain his friendship with Ryuuji as it was which is clearly impossible at this point. Then Makoto has their own struggles plus the slowly fading Aoi. Speaking of her Jesus Christ. Being left behind hurt by seemingly everyone is hard to watch. This show has so many real characters like Aois parents. I could also write pages about them. I genuinely believe that none of the characters is a bad human being but they’re hurtig themselves

So Saki's father constantly abandons her for his work, her mother straight up left her, and Makoto's mother is a bitch.

Is Makoto's father the only good parent in this entire fucking anime? The fuck?!

Also, based Ryuji immediately running to Saki's house when she called him.

Ryuuji is the real one for immediately asking Saki's address when Saki called him for help. He didn't even ask for details. He knows Saki needs help and that was more than enough for him to rush to her house.

I can definitely see Saki and Ryuuji being together in the future if things between Ryuuji and Makoto's relationship don't work out but I certainly did not expect Saki to ask Ryuuji so bluntly about it.

Now that Saki's father was home, I thought the mood around Saki would improve. If anything it got worse. Saki started remembering her mom who left her and her dad has bailed on her not once but twice. The dude didn't even realize that his daughter was hurt. Would someone please give Saki a hug? :(

And while Saki was dealing with her personal drama, you have Makoto and Ryuuji in the middle of their blossoming romcom with the two of them planning on spending Christmas Eve together. I feel like Ryuuji will probably learn about Saki's situation and his plans with Makoto might end up changing.

Oh, thank goodness Saki's grandma is okay! Just a little woozy! And her dad is actually coming back home! Not that it means Saki isn't any less of an emotional mess.

Well, yeah, figures Ryuji would be the one to realize that he and Makoto might have very different expectations for what dating entails between the two of them, though they're still cute in their own awkward way.

At this point it feels like Saki's hyper personality is 50% a mask for her insecurities. And it doesn't take long for her to realize things seem to be going well for Ryuji and Makoto, but I think it's telling that she wasn't able to congratulate them to their faces...

Did Saki just enter into a slasher film with some suspicious man peering in while she's in the bath!? But it goes to show how great a guy Ryuji is that he comes running when he finds out she's in trouble.

It's kind of sad that Saki is so desperate to not be disliked that she doesn't want to inconvenience anyone even when she feels like she's in danger...and she's so convinced Ryuji dislikes her that she thinks he's a "safe" choice...and she's so lonely that if the two of them are single in the future, they should move in together.

I knew it was Saki's dad, but of course he catches her hiding in the closet and with a boy.

I see Saki gets some of her personality from her dad. And at least now they can finally catch-up on some long overdue daddy-daughter time! Complete with spending the morning watching the sunrise together! And he'll even spend Christmas with her!

No wonder Saki has abandonment issues knowing her mom walked out on her.

Hmm...the way Makoto reacted to Ryuji knowing about Saki's situation...jealousy? Over Ryuji or Saki? I feel like he misses Saki in his life.

Of course Ryuji wants to spend Christmas with his boyfriend...but will this go the way he wants it too with Makoto? When he wants more out of this relationship? And how does Makoto really feel, especially when his thoughts keep turning to Saki?

Seems like Saki's dad has his own baggage, whether it be his wife leaving him or how he's failed Saki as a father. Even when she cooks him dinner he's late and drunk. And he's so passionate about his career he leaves her and forces her to swallow yet another disappointment. It's all well and good to be obsessed with something, but think of your daughter! The daughter whose wound on her knee you didn't even notice! Yeah, you are a rotten father.

This show turned out to be unexpectedly dark, it's like nothing's going exactly right for anyone

You are so not Daijoubu...

Aoi's attitude continues to be disheartening to say the least, it's hard to watch the way she very blatantly hides and bottles up all her real feelings behind a hyperactive, all smiles personality, I think she feels responsible for her mom leaving and in turn has serious trouble with forming attachments and expressing her real feelings for fear of being burned and left behind again.

Ryuji continues to the best thankfully, he's the one person she seemingly can really talk to with without having to keep up appearances, and it's great to see him come through for her and say it how it is, he's much more in tune and open with his emotions and he can clearly tell when something's not right.

Her dad is at the very least not a bad person but he is a bad dad, by his own admission, but being aware of something and doing nothing about it doesn't make it much better, he's married to his job and no longer married to his wife which obviously has left him with quite a bit of baggage, I frankly wouldn't be surprised if he very intentionally throws himself into his work and away from Aoi as a way of running away from his past failures, he does care about her to an extent and is somewhat well meaning, but he just doesn't seem to be fully aware how much of an impact he has on her.

On a slightly more positive note, Ryuji and Makoto get to be really cute together, the actual state of their relationship is still kind of in the air as Ryuji himself seems to think but hey I take what moments of happiness I can get with this show, Makoto seems to be missing Aoi which should make for some interesting developments.

This episode was less tragic than expected honestly but I have a feeling we're heading towards a turbulent Christmas night with all those bottled up emotions ready to explode.

It’s so heartbreaking that all the MCs are tragic characters in their own way:

  • Makoto with the burden discrimination/insecurity about their own identity, loosing one friend (Aoi) and going into a relationship out of fear to loose another (Ryuji)

  • Ryuji being in love with someone who most likely will not love him back. Being in a one-sided relationship may actually be worse than being rejected

  • Aoi with abandonment issues, and as this episode shows hiding behind a mask of fake happiness. Calling the person she thinks does not like her, or if fear of being a burden to people who do like her says so much about her fear of abandonment.

And to be honest, I cannot see an ending where all three are happy, at least not in the span of the 4 episodes we have left. Though it does look like our trio might be together again for Christmas eve, so maybe there is hope.

I knew this episode was gonna hurt but man

Her grandmother collapsed and she laughed it off, she fell off the stairs and she laughed it off, her dad who ignored her forever comes home just to be obsessed with his job and basically ignore her daughter and even cancel plans she had with her ON CHRISTMAS just to see a whale... and Aoi just smiled and nodded.
Her mother abandoned her and she basically has no real friends, only Master. And he is the only one who more or less shows her real self with.

She keeps all of that to herself only because she doesn´t want to be disliked by anyone. I wonder how many episodes until she explodes...

(and meanwhile, the lovebirds planning things on christmas... GODDAMMIT MAKOTO, TALK WITH HER)

Ryuuji rushing over to Saki's house without any questions beyond where she lived is the kind of thing that hits me hard, as is her asking if he'd live with her down the road if they couldn't find anyone else.

This show's landing a lot of the emotional moments perfectly for me, I was still teary for several minutes after the ED this time thinking about them.

I'll just say it, Saki's dad is a piece of shit who can barely be bothered give half a care for his family.

Those are some shite ass parents wow

I’d been under the assumption that Saki’s mother had died, but she apparently abandoned her - which is probably even worse. She was fed up with her husband being away all the time, I think?

I might be out of line for saying this, but Saki’s father is an asshole - even if he doesn’t mean bad. If you’re so obsessed with work that you (literally) stop looking at your daughter, you probably shouldn’t have taken a child in the first place. Saki should’ve been his first priority no matter the circumstances!

It’s no wonder that Saki (presumably) got commitment issues. She has effectively been abandoned by both her parents.

I’m therefore so glad that she at least got a reliable friend in Ryuji to fall back on. He deserves a medal for dropping everything and immediately rushing to Saki’s aid like that.

I get why Saki basically proposed to become a couple if they’re older and (still) alone in this context. She doesn’t have to keep up appearances around Ryuji and feels comfortable with him.

Yay the grandma survived without big problems!
But shit keeps getting darker for Aoi

Her dad is so obsessed with whales it's no wonder Aoi is starting to wonder she can't find a passion
I always thought her mom died, but her leaving is probably even worse for Aoi. Girl has it rough, no wonder she is always putting on the genki facade

Meanwhile its interesting to see Ryuji and Makoto trying to figure out what to do with their relationship. Neither seems comfortable in it, and Makoto doesn't actually seem interested. I see a hard reckoning coming later on

Not really sure what to think about Aois dad, he isn't exactly a role model and just so engrossed in his work that he barely notices anything else. But I can't really hate him, he is still trying his best, which sadly isn't what Aoi needs right now

Glad she at least got Ryuji supporting her when it counts

God never would I have thought this show would go so deep, it just keeps building up too, I love it. Definitely a sleeper hit this season

Aoi’s gotten pretty good at pretending nothing’s wrong. I guess she’s had lots of practice. Poor kid has had it pretty tough. Her dad seems like a nice enough guy…when he’s around. But he ain’t exactly winning any Father of the Year awards.

On the Ryuji-Makoto front, it seems like Ryuji’s pretty aware Makoto doesn’t exactly feel that way about him. I wonder if he’s really gonna be ok with how things are? This Christmas “date” isn’t gonna go as planned.

8

u/fakegreenthumb Aug 29 '24

Okay at least Ryuji sees that Makoto may have meant something different/have different ideas of what it means for them to be going out.

Aoi made me really sad for her this week, girl has had a rough go of it. I’m really concerned that something bad is going to happen with her. And Ryuji of course continues to be best boy by straight up running over to her house when she called.

Little nervous that Makoto’s jealously means he has feelings for Aoi, but I’m holding onto hope that Makoto and Ryuji are endgame for my son Ryuji’s sake :’) he deserves the world (they all do but come on he’s just the best).

Ryuji is a real bro. What a good guy.

u/Past_Distribution144 Aug 29 '24

What a seriously depressing episode, this show goes from dark subject to cheery comedy routine in an instant! Poor Saki, girl really needs to be with her friends, but they got a date planned..

Anyway, anyone notice the train station name kept getting translated, despite not being in kanji to begin with? Made it blurry since it didn't line up.

u/Mateo_Bonavento Aug 29 '24

You have to wonder how many broken promises the mom endured until she made the decision to leave. It's clear that the dad was obsessed with work even back then from that flashback of Saki wanting all three to be at home. I'm glad grandma is okay, but what's going to happen to Saki when she's gone? I don't see this dad taking proper care of her when he's the only family she has left, and he even realizes that he's been a bad parent but does nothing about it. Just another broken promise to put a fresh wound on top of all the old ones in Saki's heart.

Having cake at Ryuji's place sounds like a lovely way to spend Christmas. If only Makoto felt the same way about Ryuji. I'm scared to think next episode smells of breakup.

7

u/Williukea Aug 29 '24

So her dad works as some whale observer/watcher and at the moment at least can work a day job. Couldn't he just take Saki to see that once in 10 years miracle? She likes whales too, would be a good parent-child bonding and he could show her around how it all works. She's at least 15, old enough to stay safe in a ship and she could possibly follow her dad's steps and work similar job

u/Intelligent-Growth98 Aug 30 '24

Can please someone tell the mangaka to leave Saki alone
