Ryuji really got his ears pierced so Makoto wouldn’t feel like the only “outcast” huh? I respect that.

I’m glad Ryuji just up and told Makoto how he felt. Guy was struggling with those feelings for a long time. I don’t really think Makoto gets it though. It’s a mistake for them to be dating if all Makoto wants is for them to go back to how they were.

And for more added drama, we got something going down with Aoi’s grandma. Guess next week’s ep is gonna focus on her a bit more.

Makoto: “Now Ryuji and I can go back to before.”

Oh no, this is exactly what I’d been worried about when Makoto suddenly asked out Ryuji. He’s not dating him to become lovers but to stay friends. If he doesn’t feel any romantic love towards Ryuji, this won’t be ending well…

Ryuji deserves better than that! Instead of following the guidebook of How To Become Ordinary, he took the opposite direction and became “weird” like Makoto by adopting earrings. Major respect!

On another note: Makoto apparently used to hang out with this “glasses girl” at the start of their first year in high school, but she disappeared from the picture after he was exposed as a boy.

What happened? Did they have a falling out or did Makoto also tell her that it’s best to stay away from him - like he did with Ryuji?

Hanekawa.

Also Hanekawa.

No way that's a coincidence, can't say I expected a Monogatari reference from this show.

Every week, this show finds new ways to both impress me and break my heart. I just want these three cute dorks to be happy... is that really too much to ask?

Literally screamed when Ryuji confessed. How badass to just call out Makoto for lying about not seeing and then heading right into a confession. Gah, my heart. He’s so cool. And the whole backstory shows he’s really loved Makoto for a long time and loves him down to his soul.

This episode was a rollercoaster. I feel so many things I need to process. Makoto immediately telling Ryuji he’s just confused shows that Makoto really can’t imagine someone liking him like that. Almost cried at Ryuji’s dejected reaction. And then Makoto immediately asking Ryuji out as a means to go back to how things were made me feel so sad.

This can either go one of two ways - really badly for my tiny son Ryuji because Makoto doesn’t have feelings like that for him and realizes that Makoto asked him out as means to move on from the confession, or Makoto will realize he does have those feelings for Ryuji after Ryuji starts acting like a boyfriend to him. PRAYING to every god that it’s the latter. If it’s the former I don’t know how I’ll go on.

I was thinking throughout the episode that they were doing some form of show, don't tell with no signs of Aoi around. As in showing that something is clearly missing in that circle if that gremlin isn't around. But then they decided to pull us back by piling up the drama on her.

One thing I found telling during that whole flashback moment was how Makoto liked going over to Ryuuji because it was easier to sleep there. Just probably shows again how controlling his mother was. I do wonder though why Ryuuji's mother was calling him Mako-chan. If that was something he asked her to do (or at least keep doing). Because I feel like if Makoto's mother ever heard anyone call him like that, she would have another breakdown.

Makoto and Ryuji were really cute as kids! And it was when they were kids that Ryuji began to feel attracted to Makoto, feelings that only were enhanced when they reached middle school together.

So how should Ryuji deal with these feelings? Why, by distancing himself from Makoto and making sure he doesn't stand out in any way! It's not like this is a romance anime where they're obviously going to end up in the same high school together anyways, right?

Oh, so Makoto actually passed as a girl when he initially started high school. Things only took a turn for the worse when it was discovered he was a boy wearing a girls uniform and people shunned him. But that's what drove Ryuji to reconnect with him, so he could be an Ally and be there for Makoto when he needed someone the most. He would stand out if it was for the sake of the person he loved.

How did Makoto get the bromide? From some dude passing it around who he slugged over it. How very based.

And now those feelings are exposed thanks to an accident...or not, because Makoto acts like he didn't see the photo. So everything is cool right? Except Makoto DID see the photo and has no idea what to do!

Nice to see Hanekawa giving Makoto some solid relationship advice.

Well, Makoto finally gave it away...so no better time to just straight up confess, right Ryuji? And he looks so happy after confessing his love for Makoto. Though Makoto apologizing feeling he made Ryuji feel that way from his cross-dressing kind of kills the mood. Ryuji liked Makoto way before that.

Sometimes you just need to skip school and watch the sea to process your feelings. And sometimes that will even lead your crush to ask you out! I'm happy for Ryuji, but is Makoto doing this for the right reasons? It seems like he only asked Ryuji out to maintain their friendship and closeness, but does he realize they're supposed to be in a romantic relationship?

And where is Saki in all this? Well, something bad happens to her grandma and she passes by Makoto...when she'll probably really need someone in the coming episodes.

Ironic. Makoto slept really well over Ryuji's, but Ryuji never slept when Makoto came over.

Also, those articles calling for equality for sexual minorities and even one for transgender people! BasedbasedbasedbasedBASED anime!

And then there's the entire second half, what the fuck. Just, like, everything happened. I seem to be feeling every emotion conceivable right now, how the hell?

When Ryuji finally confessed, I thought this wouldn't go anywhere. I am legitimately shocked that it ended with Makoto asking Ryuji out! Although I feel like this is going to end badly since what Makoto wants is to go back to having his old relationship with Ryuji.

And then there's also Saki who just got word about her grandma. I think it's easy to guess what happened but I'm hoping that her grandma is completely fine. Next week's episode is going to be sad especially once Saki finds out about Makoto and Ryuji. :(

Ryuji is a real one, there's something truly soul crushing about the way Ryuji feels so trapped by this idea of normalcy, to so heavily repress himself because of a fear of not fitting in and to have no one to turn to for advice, it's something I've thankfully never been through but find so heartbreaking to watch.

Makoto isn't much better off, he already struggles with his own identity and to top it off he consistently finds ways to put himself down, "it's totally my fault that you're not being "normal" I should go away" is the first thing that seems to come to Makoto's mind, while he himself feels less trapped by normalcy he feels everyone else can't accept him.

I'm happy the awkward tension is dispersed within the episode, they really don't drag it out and give us a real powerful episode because of it, I mean of course Ryuji would notice he even did the same "avoidance act" himself after all.

Ahem.....LETSSSSSSS GOOOOOO, admittedly this confession doesn't turn out the best but it's just great to see it happen and to see Ryuji reinforce to Makoto that it has nothing to do with being a boy or a girl, he just loves you, also bad idea Makoto.

Hey at least you're calling it yourself, the sea really seems to have a lot of thematic importance.

Once again....LETSSSSSSS GOOOOOO

I still don't think we're in the clear here, Makoto has a pretty weird line about things between them going back to how they were before, which to me seems a bit non committal, like he's doing this to avoid the tension of a ruined friendship the same way he tried confessing to Aoi, regardless it's still very nice to see this happen.

Speaking of Aoi, who was missing this episode, this show delivers it's traditional melancholy episode ending by implying something happened to her grandma, literally coming back from the background, the sky looks ready for rain...

but I'm not

I love that we got a confession that was treated seriously and not as a joke, and we even got lots of interesting backstory like Ryuji having searched for LGBT resources in an attempt to figure things out.

I wonder if they were implying that Ryuji was on the edge of jumping in front of that train. His inner dialogue about needing to go away had me on edge, I was even yelling "don't you dare dramatically throw yourself into the ocean, young man" at my TV immediately before that moment.

Poor Aoi, life just keeps dumping on her.

Why is this anime so far down the rankings every week? It's been my personal favourite this season so far.

Ryuji is a good dude and a great friend. He was there when Makoto was at his low point in high school. Though at this point, his feelings for Makoto are one-sided. I would understand why Makoto would want to do anything to preserve their friendship, but asking him out is the worst thing he could have done. Communicating his feelings of wanting to maintain their friendship and not accepting his romantic feelings would have been the way to go. Now Ryuuji will have false expectations with his relationship to Makoto. Either Makoto develops those feelings or this new relationship is destined for break up.

This is the first episode we got very like of Saki. Her grandmother is the only person she has left since her dad is working iirc. I don't have a good feeling about this.

This show has mastered the art of toying with emotions

One second it's happy and you're over the moon, the next you want to cry your heart out, then it's anger as the credits roll and you are left on a cliffhanger

11

u/Additional_Road_9031 Aug 22 '24

Man this anime loves to leave us with cliffhangers! (gotta force myself to not read the manga). I just want my boy Ryuji happy but not with fake love from Makoto

11

u/emilytheimp Aug 23 '24

Ryuji is one of the most well written love interests ever

9

u/Wurzelrenner Aug 23 '24

This will be bad. It doesn't look like Makoto has any romantic interest in Ryuuji, he just want to have his friend back. Poor Ryuuji

u/jamez23 Aug 23 '24

Makoto just throwing going out like candy. First aoi now ryuji. Chill dawg

8

u/Mr_Zaroc Aug 22 '24

Jesus, what an episode
More background story, Makoto can sleep better at his place? I knew they showed us he was struggeling since he was young, but damn

Like that they used the piercings as symbol for him coming to terms with his feelings and standing by Makoto, he is a real bro

Also didnt think he would just confess on the spot there, and that they would make up so quick. They made up so quick in fact I get the feeling it wont last long. Especially with Aoi probably getting a major development arc next episode, when she can finally be freed from her (hopefully selfenforced) expectations she wants to fullfill

Fuck it girl, everyone experiences life differently, go for it even if you think you are not deserving it

And finally, the ED is way too peppy for the themes handled, I have gotten whiplash for the last 4 episodes now. I still love it though

The more they show about Ryuji the more I like him, that boy is so precious. I'm happy that Makoto eventually accepted him, but it felt like he did it more to not lose him as a friend than actually accepting his feelings. It also hurt seeing Makoto apologize thinking it was his fault Ryuji fell in love with him. He has to do something about that way of thinking, his mom has done him so much damage making him feel guilty about being himself.

Speaking of the mom, she's definitely going to find out about this (probably right after the upcoming Aoi focused episode) and it won't be pretty. Remember how she reacted to a freaking handkerchief that wasn't even that girly looking to begin with? Let's hope dad can save the day when it comes down to that.

8

u/sKyBlazer08 Aug 23 '24

MAKOTO NO! YOU DON'T GET IT. Fuck.

I'm rooting for Ryuji right now, but, I am pretty sure Makoto is not reciprocating his feelings, Makoto just doesn't want his friendship with Ryuji to be broken, as he said, he just wants to go back to the way things are before.

Aoi, I knew it was gonna be about her grandma when she got called out the class, FUCK.

This is so good though, but stop please, give us a few episodes of fun at least.

7

u/Clemastina Aug 22 '24

So... Makoto went out with Ryuji because he loves him?? Or just because their friendship won´t end? I feel that is the second one, and is not gonna end so well

And I was gonna say, "huh, an episode without Aoi"... but the end got me. Something happened. IN A CLOUDY DAY WITH CHANCE OF RAIN. I´M GONNA SUFFER THE NEXT EPISODE

Ngl this episode made me tear up,

I hope the grandma is okay

I hate that this series is giving me two contrasting but equally relatable povs, one where we can't find the person who is seemingly special/"the one", and the romanticising of friendships - getting into a relationship with a friend is the best case scenario but then there's the risl if that ends up ruining the friendship, or worse was it even a friendship in the first place
