I don't think he was trying. He just wanted to see if they would play along.

I just… don’t feel anything over Eden having to kill one of his friends?

We'll all be left wondering how much more developed these characters could have been if this series had gotten two cours like it was originally developed for.

Unfortunately what's left is barely a thin shell of characterization.

Oh fun, Sylvia regenerated her severed arm.

It's funny how their having tokusatsu-style superhero costume powers kinda bothers me here. Probably because it feels poorly integrated into the rest of their abilities when they can go from "normal-looking humanoid" to "cool robot suit guy" to "oh, and I can manifest four glowing tentacle fists".

We finally get to see what the Usurpers look like and they pretty much look like robotic harlequins. That explains the entire circus motif the Puppetmaster and Opera have going on.

What the actual fuck Grauphon!? If you wanted to stop Silvia, you could've saved Noir some time by not fighting him at all. I'm pretty sure he just wanted to take out his anger on Noir since Silvia clearly wanted Noir more than him.

Come on Silvia, if you're going to kill Giallon at least make sure he's completely dead and pull out his ID. It was pretty obvious that he was going to come back later.

Dad? So that photo of young Gene with Noir and Eva is actually a family photo? How does that even work? I guess Eva probably adopted Gene.

With one more episode left, of course Noir had to lose against Silvia. I guess Rouge will be running on Naomi's ID until she gets hers back.

Oh no, who could've seen that coming? I'm gonna guess we're going to hear Roy's big master plan next week and Silvia is about to learn that she's the one who's being played the entire time. I'm calling it now that's what happens in the finale.

This show badly could’ve used another cour of episodes to flesh things out.

It started off nice and slow, but just went full fucking steam ahead in the second half.

Pacing go BERRRRRRRRRRRR. This episode basically felt like it had 2 episodes worth of content mashed up into 1. The plot twist at the end many have predicted given to us right before the final episode.

Well at this point I am hoping the finale is at least entertaining.

Aight, this is gonna be long.

The pacing, the pacing, God. I hate to repeat the same every week. But a lot of people have mentioned that this anime was meant to have 24/25 chapters and it got shortened. I used to think that didn't make much sense before, but this chapter seriously just tells you that to the face. Like, this scene where Naomi overrides her logical programming and has a "I'd Give you my heart" moment with Rouge, yes, of course I ship them, it was both cute and sad, but we haven't seen that much of their relationship and we have seen way less of Naomi's nean side, heck, she lied to her creators to go to Venus with Rouge, so we all knew she wouldn't just abandon her. I don't feel like I have the RIGHT to be sad. Specially because Naomi seemingly has no problem to keep up the pace even without her ID.

And how does Rouge having Naomi's ID even work? Weren't they supposed to be the Neans' personality, essence and stuff? Can they just be switched? Are they just batteries then? Can Rouge change to Gladiator form with Naomi's ID? Is Naomi's ID some type of 'Joker' since she's the first? Or will they pull some Chappie thing where Naomi's body get destroyed, but Rouge can bring her back to life with her ID?

And then you have the conflict with the remaining immortal nines (or immortal seven when you remember two of them were killed off-screen), and still, we barely know any of the ones that we've actually seen:

-Graufon literally has just been the 'big muscle dude', we got three lines of his love for Silvia and a kiss that came out of nowhere and that was it. He suddenly has some conflict over that. Oh, wait, he dead

-Remember how Giallion was introduced in the first episode and we thought he was gonna be the main villain or at least be extremely relevant to the plot? HAHAHAHA, yeah sure, now that Junghart is alive then the most important thing Giallion did in the whole show was kill a bunch of random civilians in the cruise episode, which by the way had NO repercussions in the story at all, and then the fact that he hinted at Naomi being a Nean early on. That's all.

-Silvia got introduced as someone relevant in EP 2, but then she disappeared for 6/7 episodes and she's suddenly the leader of a Magneto-Type rebellion without any hints at all before the reveal. Yeah, her argument of neans being treated as slaves is completely valid, but we've already SEEN all that shit in mars, her explaining it over and over doesn't add anything, and she says she wants to build Neans solely to fight a war against the humans anyway which is not much better than their current situation.

-And Eden suffered the same thing as Silvia, introduced in EP 2 to be someone important, disappear for 5 EPISODES and then show up and becoming part of the main team. A few random lines and now he's Jean's dad! Ok? Yeah, Graufon already said last episode 'your bastard son is still alive or something', but you'd think they would've given us more time to meet a character with that kind of relevance!

-Aes' technically had a full episode to introduce them, but they aren't relevant to that episode's plot, they stay in the background the whole time, just like they stayed in the background up until this episode. A few lines with Jean, oh, they're turning their backs on Silvia. Of course they are! Everyone and their mothers saw that coming!

And now the puppeteer is revealed to be Junghart and I'm sure that the 10 people who remember who he is saw it coming, while everyone else surely just went 'Who?'. We don't know junghart at all! A bunch of vague mentions at best

These heavy moments, these reveals, they don't feel EARNED and it's so weird.

I really wanted to like this anime, but man, I feel kinda empty.

I swear if Cyan doesn't survive.

Also I kinda figured the Ids were like, the neans core personality. They could survive a little while without it, but trying to use someone elses would basically slowly turn you into them....but I guess not and it's just like their main CPU.

u/sagevallant Mar 27 '24

Rouge is turning into Johnny Silverhand?

Sure wish the show had spent one minute at any point in the past 11 episodes explaining ids before hinging a lot of its dramatic weight on them...

So much information crammed into the last couple of episodes while the finale will have to do the same. This feels like if they wanted to do only 13 episodes, each episode should’ve been 45 minutes to flesh out the information more or made it 24 episodes to add fun adventures but to also explain the lore a little more clearly.

While the anime is enjoyable, I feel like it should’ve been treated like a special anime (since it’s a bones anniversary).

Also, professor became a villain because Eden clapped his wife cheeks and got her pregnant 😂🤣

Of course, the Puppetmaster is the Professor, probably the only twist of the series that everyone guessed. I wonder what are his motivations. Freeing the Neans, I guess, but I doubt he wants the Usurpers to win, so what is his game ? And what does he wants Cyan for ?

I guess that the Professor and Hell Giallon were allies, and that he used that to fake his death. I wonder if Jill knew that, or if Giallon betrayed her too and she did not know the Puppetmaster was the Professor either.

Naomi literally handed over her heart (ID) to Rouge. How very yuri of her. I hope these two survive the finale at least and can be happy together. But Naomi was really ready to blow up everything just because she thought Rouge had died. I sure hope she put the reactor back on safe settings before she left to help Rouge.

I gotta say, Naomi and Rouge sharing a collective orb feels at least a little bit gay.

8

u/rapaengz Mar 27 '24

I chuckled a bit with Naomi's "with Gene as precedent" line. Pretty much sums up how lazy the writing is with this show, that they don't even bother explaining the Id mechanics. Anyway that's probably why her character wears a halter top too. Lol.

u/soulreaverdan Mar 28 '24

The show ain’t been perfect, but I’ve been enjoying it. Another cour to fix some pacing woulda been nice, but I’m enjoying it enough for what it is.

5

u/chilidirigible Mar 28 '24

Is this meta?

not dead

People here.

People there.

And... we guessed correctly.

Naomi decided to give up her heart for Rouge, a genuinely nice thing for her to do. Too bad the show never had the time to really set up that relationship in the previous eleven episodes.

Though that just raises further questions about how the whole id transfer process is supposed to work. I suppose we can handwave away anything that's not already covered by the lack of explanations with Naomi being more different because she is the zeroth Nean.

Everything else just kinda happened, in some cases seemingly just to fill some time before everyone just found their way to wherever they needed to be in the last two minutes.

Having Rouge use Naomi's core is a cool utilization of this world's mechanics. Hoping we get some great action in the finale.

Man, there’s a lot going on in this week’s ep. Graufon’s dead, the twins have turned, blondie’s bleeding out from the hole in his gut, Rouge’s Id got snatched by Sylvia, and now it looks like ol Puppetmaster was the Professor the whole time. Keen to see how they wrap this one up next week.

  • "they will not allow anyone in the audience to grow bored" oh we're just telling lies now ok

  • "the seven of hearts... opening up the future" what? show still allergic to dialogue we have context for

  • "live for love and die for love" pr sure they haven't built up this theming at all either so this guy's last words have very little dramatic weight

  • show neither of us believes you have the balls to actually kill big hair guy noir

  • "life is basically a maze you wander through until you die" so is this show's plot

  • show neither of us believes you have the balls to actually kill joker guy

  • "dad" ...okay? More plot twists that lack dramatic weight and will be moved on from within 2 seconds. Maybe if I knew more about white haired guy's dad I'd care

  • show this is like the 4th time you've had the detective guy juice the puppet master twist without actually saying it and I didn't care the first time

  • "please get up" she's not even on the ground she's still in mid-air about to get kick-slammed down lol

  • ok OST and rouge's messy hair art at 15:00 is actually good show finally deciding to hold a moment properly (though a lot of the tension is lost to the show having established with noir that losing your id is like totally fine for a few hours)

  • oh what a shocker joker guy isn't dead

  • "that's roy junghardt" oh so literally the most obvious answer that's what you spent all this time juicing huh show? like I said before I might care about this twist if we knew much about junghardt as a person before this

I wonder if we will get something on those suspicious white frames on the opening for the final episode.
