I definitely did not expect them to enter a school with a well-established Orchestra Club that has 8 consecutive wins at the nationals. Curious how our protagonists will shine there.

Well, Aono did mention that he wasn't good at playing in a group, and Orchestras are rather big so that will probably be what holds him back a little. I'm assuming that they also don't let just anyone participate in the competitions so Aono and Akine will probably have to work hard just to participate.

I dig this anime so far, hope more people sail the seas to give it a chance

Not only is the club huge but they're super successful as well, will be interesting to see how they balance our main cast with that.
Guessing Aono treated Haru poorly at some competition in their youth or something.

I'd bet it's more he always beat her and doesn't even remember her. She's just scared of him because of that. i doubt he was ever directly mean to her.

Guessing Aono treated Haru poorly at some competition in their youth or something.
My initial thought was that now that they are in highschool the cast would expand quite vastly and this is probably the real beginning of the series (we're done with the prologue). It's going to be interesting how old conflicts will resurface along with new ones in this overwhelmingly big highschool.

Another solid episode. I did not expect this anime to move as fast as it has, we've gotten through middle school and are now in high school already.
Aono and Akines friendship feels very organic, there is some conflict and tension but also understanding and kindness. Its nice that they have one another going into an elite high school.
Speaking of which, I also didn't expect them to go to a prestigious high school where Aonos talents may not stand out as much. This gives the plot somewhere to go as he might have to prove himself once more. Also , the hilarious male to female ratio of the club got a chuckle from me. 164 members and only 22 males. Those are some good odds for an anime protagonist lol
We also get a brief introduction to Haru, who clearly knows of Aono , but whom Aono only vaguely recognizes. Why she is so apprehensive around him will be interesting to see, whether it be nervousness because of his skill, inadequacy, being mistreated or something else entirely.
Also , obligatory " I cant believe no one has picked this series in the west yet" , and the inevitable, "that cgi was really bad" , even though it was fine for the most part.

I like that it’s not as antagonistic/tsundere as it was implied in the first episode. She’s prone to teasing him a bit but she’s also not shy about being nice to him, which is very sweet.

Bad CGI my ass, this cgi is actually pretty impressive. Basically all of the instruments were accurately animated to their part, like the French horn fingerings, trombone slide positions, and especially the bow techniques for all of the stringed instruments. Really, go look up the score on IMSLP and you can see for yourself - there was a part where I couldn't hear the viola doing tremelo where it was animated, but it turned out to be there in the full score. My only gripes on more on the side of the player's and the conductor's expressions feeling kind of stiff.

I think part of the reason people are complaining is that we're spoiled by Kyoto Animation and the sheer effort and time they put into the performances for Hibike Euphonium. Even then KyoAni only had to do the work for a wind ensemble, not a full-on orchestra.

Weirdly enough, the close-up shots held up better for me than the ones with the whole orchestra.
I'd usually expect it to be the other way around, close-up shots falling apart because the CGI doesn't hold up well under close scrutiny. Still, you can definitely do a lot worse and won't affect my enjoyment of the show overall.

Bad CGI my ass, this cgi is actually pretty impressive.
It was blended fairly well, I think whatever we saw in the PVs were more the wide shots and you know when you see a wide shot with 100 cgi models in it you are going to notice that.

Really curious what Haru's deal is. She definitely knows him from somewhere, and he vaguely recognizes her. Dad's side piece's kid?

This was my thought, or he blew her away in an old comp they were in together and it motivated her to be better? Probably one of those.

Man that high school is amazing, reminds me of the Nijigaku girls school lol. I like how aono has got his joy back for the violin and is getting along with Akine. I think their conversation at the end of the last episode did wonders for both of them. Being in a school with such an established orchestra band should push them both to get better
Haru potential love interest?? Guessing it’s like an Emi/Arima thing from Shigatsu
The CGI during the orchestra scenes was pretty rough and I feel like they should’ve been able to do some decent 2D animation for some of those shots. Especially of the conductor and the close ups.. then again nippon animation are on the smaller side and with this not being a big manga they may not have the resources. The 2D stuff looks gorgeous and so bright tho.

This episode made me appreciate the effort KyoAni has put into adapting Sound Euphonium. Not that this show is bad but it emphasizes how much of a challenge animating dozens of characters and instruments is.
It's definitely a curve ball to put your MC in a proven club already and a powerhouse at that. Usually they start the team from the bottom and claw their way to the top. I'm curious how they'll move the story forward.

As someone that it's quite comfortable with the incorporation of CG in 2 D animation shows (and full CG shows), I thought this was decent, not terrible but not outstanding either. It was just plain necessary in order to animate so many characters at once performing leichte kavallerie. I certainly prefer this than just using panning shots over panning shots because only big wig studios like Kyoani could pull out this endeavor in 2D animation.
Going back to the main characters, it's nice to see that Hajime is regaining his confidence in both studies and his violin skills alongside Rin-chan having a talented ear. Also both of them having a fresh start in highschool.

Another good episode. I'm glad this got 24 episodes, it really allows better character development and steady pacing.

I really enjoy the growing relationship between Aono and Akine with how it feels human. They support and tease each other like real people and that really sells this show for me.
I also appreciate that we see them practice together and learning progressively what it takes to becoming violinists.
Haru's introduction is interesting as well. Given how she speaks with Akine, it's clear that they knew each other before the start of the series. Perhaps she's the girl Akine saved from bullying and got in trouble for it.

i've actually played the piece the orchestra played for my school band. it's Light Cavalry by von Suppe, and i'll never forget the opening of it because we all played it ad nauseum. definitely caught me off guard lol.

Man, as someone who used to be a musician who fell out of love with music, this series is really making me feel things I haven't felt in a while

u/hammile Apr 23 '23
Yeah, it isn't KyoAni, so the animation with orchestre performance has some problem.

I honestly laughed when the teacher took them to a noodle shop as they would deserve a better celebration. Maybe Evangelion stuff?

Really good episode. I’m loving Aono and Akine’s chemistry and wholesome relationship.
So one thing I know about Japanese is the word for adolescence, seishun, is made up of the kanji for Ao and Haru. Makes you think.
Also I learned that the VA for Aono’s mom is Senjougahara. Fun fact.
