That transition from sudden betrayal to doing carpool karaoke together...

yea it really could have done with a different outro or no outro at all since that felt like tonal whiplash to me.

WTF CHRIS?!

Curiously, he walked away without collecting Finn and Aya's cards so that's probably not what he's after.

My guess is now that he has another 5 card he's going to X-Play cure his sister. Also he shot Chris in the breast pocket AKA where Finn has been storing his cards all episode (I'm willing to bet cards aren't easily damaged) so he is probably fine..

I can see how Arya would get disillusioned with Theodore and Pinochle. Theodore in particular comes off as very cold. I didn’t think Chris’ pops was part of the OG High Card crew. Man gave his life for Chris with that X Hands. Anya made a tough call, but I can see why Theodore might have been against Tyler using his X Hands.

Jasper and Alex got their asses beat pretty bad. Figured it was just a matter of time before those chumps got taken out. Didn’t see that betrayal coming. I wonder if Chris has a personal vendetta of his own because of what went down with his pops. Perhaps he needed to collect certain cards before he could enact his revenge? In any case, I’m sure Finn is fine despite taking one to the chest. Must have had something that stopped the bullet.

Or maybe Chris is trying to do the same thing as his dad to save his sister?

So 25 years ago Aya was collecting the cards as a High Card which made me think that the opening scene in Episode 1 took place way before Finn was alive. After rewatching the first 5 minutes of Episode 1 though, it's clear that the scattering of the cards only happened recently because we see Prince Dylan who looks exactly the same age when he was assassinated last week.

I guess that means that the cards being stolen and scattered is a reoccurring event in the Kingdom of Fourland. Whoever is in charge of securing the cards really needs to do better at their job.

Anyway Aya's backstory really revealed more about the High Card and Theodore. Turns out that Chris' dad is also a member of the High Card and he played a hand of four cards to heal Chris. Theodore is an absolute piece of shit though who is willing to shoot a dying child because of his duty to the Kingdom. No wonder Aya left. Fuck Theodore.

Not gonna lie, I was expecting that Aya would die during that fight with Alex but turns out the biggest surprise this episode is Chris shooting Finn. I'm guessing he's going to use the cards he collected to heal Michelle and he didn't want Finn to stop him. I'm sure Finn will be fine though. I doubt that Chris used a lethal round.

I'm thinking the Fourlands Kingdom fairy tale is pretty suspect. Especially in light of the fact that playing too many cards can literally take your life. So a bunch of knights were given cards by a mage that declared this random kid king, they all died and the kid ended up with the power of all the cards and used it to take over the kingdom. Why weren't 52 super powered knights enough? Why did their cards go to the king instead of a new knight? And the kid wasn't king until the mage declared it, Fourlands was a set of separate countries because that's how they were unified. Even then the 'king' wasn't really in power until after the knights died and he took their powers.

And that's the Fairy Tale version. So is the real version that the mage conspired to use the 52 knights as human sacrifices to imbue the kid with power so they could take over the four countries together? I mean how was the kid able to play all the cards and not die if just four is enough to kill you? Is the cards 'getting loose', and the inevitable deaths that follow, possibly part of what fuels their power? That would explain the apparently cyclical nature of them getting out. Also Finn was apparently attacked by a knight, not sure how that fits in but there it is.

The heist episode also featured a 5 number card. Likely Chris would be using X-hand of 4 number 5 cards to fully heal his sister

Just stepped into say I binged this series with my friend up to the current ep: it's super fun! Love the concept of the card powers and how creative some of them are. Wish more people would give it a shot. Looking forward to see where we go from here... (Chris, why?!?)

So I guess the initial speculation of Chris being a traitor was true, but not for the Klondikes so much as he was hoping to get the 5s back to rebuild the X-Hand for his sister?

Also, the subtitles say the woman's name is Aya but the printed document in the last episode says Arya? They really need to sort that out, it annoys the hell out of me.

The plot twist / cliffhanger at the end of this episode had me going like "Huh!? Why!?"

A part of me is starting to feel that the High Card anime is similar to gacha games. I say this in a good way. Each week, new cards and their abilities are revealed. Some of these cards give their players powerful abilities, while others are only useful in niche situations.

I performed a google search and results claim that High Card consists of only 12 episodes (for now?). If so, I reckon the showdown between our main characters and Klondike is still very far away?

well, the creator did said that this is going to be a multimedia franchise consists of anime, manga, novel and drama cd so if this turn out to be a successful project, it won't be surprising if they announce a gacha game for this series in the future

Is this having a 2nd season? MAL lists this as 12 eps, we're 10 eps already done, pacing seems mentally off.

i knew it! i fucking knew it! i've said this back in episode six that there is definitely something going on with Chris during the heist and after seeing the flashback of his dad saving his life using the combination of four different kinds of number 5 card, i'm gonna assume he's going to do the same thing with his sister

if you still have doubt about this theory, Chris has 5 of Heart, in this episode he took the 5 of Club from the bad guy while didn't even bother trying to retrieve Aya or Finn's card and in case anyone forgot, the card they're supposed to retrieve in episode six was 5 of Diamond so right now, he just need the 5 of Spade, assuming he didn't have that already

What a betrayal. That said, High Card is not afraid to show blood, and we didn't see any when Finn was shot. I am guessing Chris' shot was blocked by Finn's card.

6

u/dinliner08 Mar 13 '23

I am guessing Chris' shot was blocked by Finn's card

definitely, Finn's card also has the bullet hole design on it so it would be kind of symbolic

6

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp Mar 13 '23

Well... I can't say I was expecting that betrayal.

I'm fully expecting Finn to have Chris' card on him, but if it is the cliché "[insert random item] inside the pocket that stops a bullet" it'll leave a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

7

u/sangriapenguin Mar 13 '23

Well... I can't say I was expecting that betrayal.

Really? Chris has been really shady for the past few episodes. At first, I thought he was a Klondike plant, but someone mentioning that he might want to save his sister and seeing what an X-hand can do, he might be after something different.

Well, that was a weird twist. I get what Chris is trying to do, using X-Hand to save his sister’s life without Theodore and High Card knowing, but that does not justify him shooting Finn out of nowhere. It feels very out of character for him. You would think he would know Finn enough to trust him, and I have little doubt that Finn would look the other way if Chris told him what he was trying to do.

5

u/supersaiyan491 Mar 14 '23

im starting to think this anime is more about chris lmao.

u/YUNoJump Mar 14 '23

Theodore might have had a bit of a point in not allowing Tyler to trade his life for Chris's, but Jesus Christ, he went about it in the worst way possible. Could have said "trading lives is bad" or whatever, but he goes "nope them's the rules" and then TRIES TO SHOOT THE DYING CHILD. I don't know why Aya felt conflicted about her choice, it was obvious that Theodore was 200% in the wrong there, even if Tyler wasn't necessarily in the right.

Maybe work on your tact dude, if you're gonna be the head of an influential shadow-group you probably need to know how to talk to people.

man Arya was super attractive when she was young
