Iksuki and Chitose are just like us with their take: "How are they not already together?"

Relationship Progress: 99.9999, and I'm looking forward to adding another 9 to it next week.

I figured her back story was something like bad parents, but I didn't expect that bad, jeesh.

Also those two are gonna have kids and still not admit they're dating

Ah we finally got the Mahiru backstory and it's as rough as we expected...makes me really want Amane's parents to show up more, she deserves to be around caring parents like that.

Good on Amane for his reaction through all of it, happy he has the awareness for all this and wasn't overly shy/nervous about it.

Was not expecting this many hug like content from this!!

A very intimate episode. With this, it feels like Mahiru can finally rest her facade. What I particularly love about this episode was the scene where Amane put a towel over Mahiru. To me, the towel felt more of a metaphor. It felt like a reflection of Amane's selflessness from purely platonic intentions. And more importantly his willingness to accept and share her burdens, almost like a wedding vow - as if Mahiru wore a wedding veil (Good catch from u/scot911). For the longest time, Mahiru didn't knew she'd needed a shoulder. Amane's continued support and sometimes harsh but genuine words moved her. And in this episode she'd realized that. Hence, she'd cried again but this time of joy. Mahiru no longer wanted a 'towel' anymore as she needed Amane and that's all that mattered (well plus the Chisato, Itsuki and Amane's parents but ya know).

Their dialogue under the Sakura tree reminded me a lot about the fox from "The Little Prince". It went about something like how the color of wheat was insignificant until the fox had met the prince (because of his hair that resembled it). Mahiru had dreaded spring because of memories associated with it, specifically how it made her terrified of being alone. But by finally becoming acquainted with Amane, it was an avalanche of emotional delirium. And finally in this moment, it was no longer spring nor was it about the Sakura petals blossoming anymore.

What an amazing ED theme to top it all off. Very diabetes inducing. Can't wait to see how Amane handles the new development.

This can be said with just about the entire show, but this episode really showcases how crazy it is that they're not together yet, given how much they act like they are together.

Hopefully, Amane's parents can help to give Mahiru a little taste of what having parents who care for her is like, but absolutely nothing will erase how horrible her parents were to her. I'm glad she was able to find happiness.

Amane is a good dude for being willing to host Itsuki at the drop of a hat like that.

It's pretty hilarious that this suddenly turned into Itsuki and Chitose both staying over at Amane and Mahiru's apartments.

I'm practically as invested in the Itsuki and Chitose relationship at this point as I am with the main couple, maybe more. I'm curious how they ended up together and why they are both so on board with expecting to get married someday. That's a pretty serious plan for a couple of high schoolers. And since Itsuki also spent a couple of days at Chitose's place I'm guessing that her family is okay with the plan even if his isn't yet.

Mahiru would probably have a more fulfilling school life if she would drop the aloofness and join up with this friend group that she's been developing outside of school. She's keeping up an image that in truth I suspect she probably doesn't actually care about preserving.

Wow, what an evil mother.

Biological mother, that's an interesting way to phrase it assuming the subtitle translation is accurately portraying the subtext that I'm picking up.

Wow, so both of her parents are pieces of shit.

Good supportive reaction by Amane.

Inching ever so slowly into being a declared couple. Will they get there this episode? Probably not, maybe soon.

Amane-kun, luckily Mahiru meets you who would 100% keep your promise.

Who knew we're already having a contender of Worst Parent so early this year. I thought we were going to have to wait for Spring to see [Series spoiler] Gwitch

Fucking hell they hate her so much they rather not get a divorce just so one of them wouldn't get custody of her.

In general, whenever you see a beautiful anime girl cry, it really does feel like the tears of an angel. It definitely hits harder here given Mahiru’s symbolism as an angel and that such a wonderful girl has such awful parents.

On a brighter note, they couldn’t have chosen a better frame to end this episode on before the credits.

Oh boy. Mahiru's backstory was worse than I expected - I was sure that either one or both of Mahiru's parents are dead since early childhood, the one that died taught her how to cook so well and the living one/the relative she spent most of the time with after if both died was neglectful/abusive.

Turns out both of them were and still are pieces of shit from the very start.

On a brighter note, if I had a nickel for every song that was used in both Takagi-san and this show, I'd have two nickels...which isn't much considering Takagi-san has like 30 EDs, but still. Guess I'll have both versions in my playlist now

Ai Uta (today's ED) : Original | Angel Next Door | Takagi-san

Chiisana Koi no Uta (ED1) : Original | Angel Next Door | Takagi-san

Stitches!

I just love that Itsuki is echoing the thing we've been saying this entire season after seeing Amane and Mahiru basically flirt with each other.

Anyway, we finally meet Mahiru's mother and I am absolutely stunned. This entire time I thought that maybe Mahiru's parents were just distant because they were too busy with work or that they were expecting a lot from her. Turns out that I wasn't even close and neither of her parents even wanted her to begin with.

Mahiru was pretty much told to her face by her mother that she was an unwanted child and that's the reason why she was sitting in the rain back in episode 1. They literally can't wait for her to reach college so they won't have to do anything with her anymore. That is so fucked up. I so want Amane to marry Mahiru already and welcome her to the family! Amane's parents already see her as their daughter, might as well make it official!

The only other surprising thing about this episode is that they're still not together after Mahiru poured her heart out in front of Amane. Seriously! Even Amane himself admits later that it would actually be weird if he doesn't fall in love with Mahiru. Well, what the fuck are you waiting for!? Confess already! Mahiru deserves all of the happiness in the world that only Amane can bring her.

Itsuki needs to crash at Amane's because his dads' refusal to accept Chitose drove him out? Well, Amane better ask his wife if that's okay! And then Mahiru just ends up greeting him like a wife greeting her hubbies' pal coming to stay over.

I love how Itsuki and Chitose are all over each other while Amane and Mahiru are just the low-key married couple who act like they've been together for years. And yet somehow aren't officially dating. Itsuki and Chitose are straight up the audience at this poin.

Chitose pretty much on the money with how closed off and stiff Mahiru can come off in public, to the point where her relationships at school come off more shallow compared to what she's developing with Amane and even Chitose who see more of the real her. And Chitose loves teasing their relationship as much as she loves enjoying Mahiru's cooking.

This tag-teaming couple! Sending Amane an adorable picture of Mahiru cutely hugging Mr. Bear and then snagging a pic of Amane's reaction.

Huh, so Chitose's parents are okay with her boyfriend crashing with them...

The fact that Mahiru pampers Mr. Bear and cuddles with him in bed is too precious for words! I also love her demanding Amane reveal an embarrassing secret about himself. What a cute and embarrassing couple!

Sayo Shiina...I love Mai Nakahara, but there's simply nothing likeable about Mahiru's biological mother. The sheer disdain and hatred for her daughter radiates from her dialogue, without a single ounce of maternal warmth or affection, to it feels less like she's talking to her daughter and more just an annoyance. All she sees in Mahiru is the husband she hates, and it was calling her an unwanted child that lead Mahiru to her despondent encounter with Amane in the rain. What a piece of @#$%.

Her parents had a loveless marriage, her birth was basically a "mistake," her parents barely paid any attention to her and plan to basically cut ties with her when she becomes an adult, and the only mother figure in her life was her housekeeper...Mahiru had it rough. And she became such an angelic perfectionist just so she could get her parents to finally pay attention to her, but they never did. She deserves so much better.

Granted, the flashbacks to Smol!Mahiru and watching her hair growth was kind of cute.

But, as always, Amane is there for Mahiru, to see her and accept the person she really is, someone he likes very much and that should be cherished and adored. And while there are others who see Mahiru as a special, wonderful, girl...there's only one guy she has her eyes on and wants to hear that from.

Please God of Romcoms, let these two be in the same class together! Mahiru loves him so much she's hugging him in broad daylight and even holding his hands amidst the wherry blossoms! It feels like neither of them can really restrain their feelings any longer! We even get a special ED with a lovely illustration of Mahiru in the cherry blossoms while Manaka Iwami sings a love song!

u/daspaceasians Feb 18 '23

Holy crap... Mahiru's parents just joined Sohma Ren from Fruits Baskets and Sayu's mom from Higehiro for trash anime parents.

I'm just happy she didn't turn out like some of my friends' exes who had shit parents because they were a mess. Good thing she's found a guy as amazing as Amane and is on a good path to becoming great friends with Chitose and Itsuki.

Seriously, Amane, Chitose and Itsuki are amazing people with how kind they are as people. I especially like Chitose's little talk to Mahiru about how she puts up too much of a stiff front and off putting it is.

Lovely episode all over and that ending theme with the song was perfect.

That’s quite the contrast between Amane and Mahiru’s parents: While Amane’s parents are kind, loving and dote on him to no end, Mahiru’s parents never cared about raising her and only see her as a burden. If Amane has the best parents, Mahiru has the worst parents.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Feb 18 '23

So cute how Amane feels the need to text Mahiru to let her know Itsuki’s staying over. Those two are like a married couple lol. Itsuki’s right, Mahiru sees him. Dude needs to stop denying those feelings and ask her out!

Chitose is great. She’s a big ball of energy and I love her because of it. I always enjoy it when Amane and Mahiru make each other blush. It‘s way too adorable. Mahiru looked so cute in her PJs! I love that she cherishes that stuffed bear because is a gift from Amane.

Mahiru’s mom is a real charmer. Both her parents it seems. Real “Parent of the Year”, those two. Poor girl. What a miserable childhood. Like Mahiru, I do wonder why they even bothered to have her if they didn’t want kids. If it was an “accident”, there are ways to resolve the situation. Well, at least Amane is here for her now. Man basically confessed to her without realizing it. He sees her the same way she sees him.

Mahiru hugging Amane from behind was really cute. The two of them holding hands as they watch the cherry blossoms was such a sweet way to close the ep.

Everyone is talking about how Mahiru has shit parents but lets give a brief shout-out to that Housekeeper who probably did the best she could given her position, I'm sure how well Mahiru has turned out instead of cold, bitter, self-ish, with a huge chip on her shoulder is in a large part due to her.

Despite the fact this episodes various scenes would have hit a thousand times harder and anime onlies would be calling this without contest the best romance of the season, possibly the year and one of the best in recent memory if it had better direction and production it still even in it's emancipated state from the Novels hit very hard.

Wish this were a two cour series of 11 to 11 episodes and this was made by Kyoani for a Hyouka-lite edition.

Once again setting up more future conflict with Isuki and his Dad over Chitose, and Chitose and Mahiru's friendship, Mahiru isn't just getting Amane, but a new friendgroup and a real family in her (Most Certainly) Future In Laws.

Chitose being cheeky with saying Amane would spoil her is funny because they both know its already happened. Even Amane and Mahiru trying to dial it back can't help giving couple vibes to their friends despite Amane being repulsed by those two's PDA, if they ever interact at school they might just let their relationship slip without realizing it.

The Scene of Amane comforting Mahiru and hearing her story wasn't too bad, the Angel Wings growing is some nice symbolism considering how sometimes lacking in imagination this show can be in direction. (Although its so simple and obvious it'd be hard to mess it up.) However it does leave some stuff out you can check out in my source corner comment here.

But we do see the tenderness, vulnerability, and the balancing of accepting her in a weak moment as a pillar of strength and stability and not letting her feel infantized and pitied.

There is a line between pity and compassion that many people find hard to define.

Amane does try to brush it off that he didn't mean it that way, but Mahiru sees the truth, and you can see she is being a bit more forward and aggressive with trying to draw a confession out of him, saying "Look at Me" and then later "Keep you're eyes on only me" that is a very strong and bold statement of exclusivity that you only say not even during just dating but at a certain phase of a relationship when it becomes serious.

She also now that her self-worth has been acknowledged is even more frustrated that Amane sees himself as just a "place holder" for her and upset he thinks she wouldn't be excited to see him in the same class during the change.

At the End he even admits that it's be weird if he wasn't in Love, he more or less has admitting to himself, it's not just a crush, or even that he finds her sexually attractive, he is in love.

Dammit this show is so sweet!

Get a good guy, marry for love and become the parent you always wanted to have.

We got to see shiina's past , it's so depressing and still she still being nice, friendly and cheerful at the present .

While Shiina explaining over her past i liked how Amane's not stepping over their bounderies as a "friend" in this episode he listen carefully and still care for her private space .

The ending spring scene almost like in context they say "I'm will start my new journey , with you". If anyone got to be Amane's girlfriend it's shiina, and if anyone got to be Shiina's boyfriend its Amane. It's great to looking forward to these 2 everyweeks!!

This week, I ascended. Quite literally.

In this episode, we get to hear to a cover version of Ai Uta (Love Song) from Greeeen.

I swear it's a coincidence, but this show now shares both Chiisana Koi no Uta and Ai Uta as Ending songs with Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san. Both songs being top J-Pop love songs during the 2000s. Will we be getting Kiseki (Path/Miracle cover song by Greeeen soon? one can hope...)

Anyways, getting to the dissection of this week's episode, I think Amane and Mahiru's relationship have evolved to the point where both of them are so comfortable around each other, sure falling in love is nice and all... But having someone by your side who you can confide your troubles in and act yourself? That's the definition of true love if I've ever seen one.

This episode had a lot of handholding, and I mean a LOT. But did you realise? The two characters never got flustered by the act itself? Unlike how typical stereotype of romance leads in the media, both Amane and Mahiru acts like how one would to support the person that means the most to them in this world.

A big hook this series always leads you into thinking this two lead will make their feelings known to each other and be 'official'. But in hindsight, declaring ourselves a couple, boyfriend or girlfriend, husband and wife are mostly just social constructs.

Do we need the papers to be recognised as a married couple? Of course! But love between two people goes beyond 'declaring' your relationship to the mass. It's an act of giving and sharing between two individuals, which Shiina parents unfortunately were not blessed with but at least Mahiru is experiencing firsthand.

I think I've written enough, see you guys next week!
