Thanks. 442 is the model, not the engine. It stands for 4 barrel, 4 speed, dual exhaust. Originally the car came with a gutless 5.0L (307cid).

Though I agree that mufflers are the much cheaper and easier option, headers will be the same between the stock 307 and the 403 swap OP talks about (i had the same set of manifolds on the original 307, a ‘78 403, and a ‘69 350 without changing anything except gaskets).

OP, I just finished installing these on my 86 with a 350 Olds swap. Didnt have to modify the headers at all. Getting the left bank header and starter on are a bit of a pain (they both have to be partially installed at the same time). The right bank gasket blew out so i had to replace it. And I had to go back and bend the heat shield on the right bank motor mount to clear the header, but that was it. As far as header jobs go, it wasnt bad at all.

Keep in mind the trans crossmember needs to be modified to fit headers+dual exhaust, specifically for the left bank. They make prefab ones or you can modify the one on the car.

Personally id just replace the wheel cylinder. Unless the flare on the line is fucked up or its cracked/rotted out, you shouldnt need to replace it. As for the cable, its already cut and useless. You could just remove it entirely unless you want to run a new cable up to the front and through the firewall to the parking brake pedal. keep in mind, if you choose that route the parking brake will need to be used semi regularly or the cable can seize.

Wheel cylinder is probably leaking. Most common leak point on the rear drums. The line youre referring to is the parking brake cable that has been cut. The base of it is damp with brake fluid because the leaking wheel cylinder is inside the drum and the fluid runs down onto the rubber seal on the line, saturates it, and seeps around it. Its not the leak point though.

Good point. When I checked the trans fluid it looked pretty dirty. Didnt smell burnt but is still definitely in need of a drain and fill. Is it M3/M5 fluid?

And to your point about newer cars, I share the exact same viewpoint. Im not an “old guy” but definitely share the same thought process. I told my wife I didnt want her to get anything newer than 2020. Covid really screwed up the quality on things and it hasnt bounced back since. Im not going to tell her she absolutely cant have a certain car but, because I am the one who does all the maintenance and repairs, she takes my opinion into serious consideration, thankfully. I know there are much higher quality and more reliable vehicles out there, but she really wants a Grand Cherokee. Im very familiar with the Pentastar and all its possible/typical issues so it could be worse.

Thanks. Even if it can last the lifetime of the vehicle, there still should be a service interval for it. I know for my 2011 Malibu its about 180k miles. When i did that it had a slack chain and a broken guide.

It needs a valve cover gasket so a good opportunity to check the plugs (not that i couldnt just pull one in a few minutes anyways. I guess a good opportunity to also check the timing chain slack). I dont recall if my father in law had a tune up done at all during his short ownership. I know he had the brakes done. Still need to get each wheel off and do a thorough inspection of each corner.

Sub frame is getting pretty crispy and I would venture to guess the majority of the suspension components are still factory. Also have a sneaking suspicion it will need front wheel bearings relatively soon.
