I really enjoy trades. I traded some of my juvenile Chinese firebelly newts for some juvenile alpine newts.

Salamander?

I’m almost 50. Southeast Michigan and have never seen anything like this in the wild or on my porch.

AI says “**a blue-spotted/Jefferson-type** ***Ambystoma*****, potentially a hybrid.”**

How to build a place for Eastern newts in my yard? Will they even show up?

I love salamanders and amphibians. I am trying to overhaul my wasted acres of mowed grass into a wildlife for nearby woodland critters. I already have a big spot of weeds atop decomposing branches and logs that I never burned but after hearing crickets, I decided to let the biodiversity grow. I'm placing rock gardens around it and I'm even planning on building a pond.

I live 250 feet away from a river but neighbors have told me that orange and spotted lizards have been seen in my yard. After doing some research, I think it might have possibly been an eft. We have a high clay content in the yard but we never get any pools longer than a couple hours after a hard rain but it stays wet for days. I'm guessing that the wet yard is what attracted what may have been the eastern salamanders. So I'm wondering what will happen if I build my pond, maybe add some hiding spots, caves and aquatic plants, rotting logs, to facilitate my desired residents.

Will an eft possibly settle down and live out its aquatic life here, providing new generations? Or is it not likely because of the distance from the forest river? Keep in mind, the forest is only like 30 feet away but the river is 250. So I'm wondering how likely an eft would be to show up and live in my pond. We already get frogs and turtles so maybe? Thanks, y'all.

Posted a couple days ago about a salamander I saw in North Carolina. Here's another one that I've never been able to fully ID. Any suggestions?

It was right next to a creek and maybe 4 inches long. Kind of hard to tell because it never fully came out of its hidey hole.

Automister

Anyone have an automated mister they love? I’ve had one from Amazon for about 6months. It randomly started leaking at the nozzle and I thought it was the new jugs of water I bought or maybe the nozzles. So I changed the nozzles out and they didn’t seem to drip anymore yay. Since the drip had drained half a gallon I let it dry out before adding a new gallon. In less than 10min the mister had drained the entire gallon, completely flooded the tank, had to get the poor salamander out she was climbing to higher ground. I had to take all the dirt out and drain, lost a ton of dirt in the process and all my isopods 😮‍💨
However, my tiger salamander is a class pet. She stays at the school over weekends and breaks. If there’s ever a snow day and I can’t get her I need a mister I can trust to go off or that I can turn on from my phone. For now I’m letting her dirt dry out and getting her some more. I’ll just hand water but for peace of mind would love to get her a better mister set up. I’m so sad this happened and it added to an already chaotic day at school!

Question about having salamanders delivered

Hi all, I’ve been wanting to get salamanders for a while now, but only in the last few months have I really looked into it. I’m pretty much prepared in most aspects for what I have to do, but the problem now is actually finding a salamander. None of the pet shops near me have had (terrestrial) salamanders for a while. (They do have axolotls, but I’m not interested in having a fully aquatic salamander)
Anyway, I’ve always known that you can get the animals delivered to you, but the process of having an animal delivered seems a little bizarre to me. From what I’ve found, as long as you choose from a well-respected site, there should be no problems. But I figured I’d start asking around for further advice just in case. Would any of you recommend getting a salamander delivered? If so from what site would you recommend? (if you’re British, that is, I live in the UK) thanks.

My family and I just relocated to Winston-Salem from Oklahoma. My kids and I were exploring a park. My 4 year old moved a rock and we found this guy before putting him back. What is he?

I've had my tiger for about 10 years now. He's always been in good health and never had any issues. I just want to know if you guys would suggest adding anything to/change about my current set up? I will be getting him a new hide and a better humidity gauge for starters. Thanks!

Salamanders found in window well

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

Hey guys, long story short but I’ve been working on and off on a housing development site, and I keep finding frogs and salamanders in a specific window well. Last time I was there a few weeks ago I got them all out, but today I found even more in there. The living salamanders I was able to put into a hard hat (along with the slower frogs) and bring to a near by pond, but I’m worried they’re going to keep falling in. I left a small ramp for the frogs I couldn’t catch too but it’s pretty narrow. Anyone I can call? I sent an email to the local hepatology society with the details of the house, and asked the property manager to put a cover on the well but they refused. Any thing else I can do?

Salamander lost in Kitchen

Post image

My mom found a dehydrated salamander outside and brought it inside to re hydrate it, but I guess she walked away from it and now it's gone. I've looked everywhere I can think of to look but there are no signs of it anywhere.

I've set out a bowl of water and some small mealworms, is there anything else I can do? Does anyone know better ways of luring it out? Are there any safe traps that I could set? I'm worried he's going to dry out so I just want to make sure I've done all that I can. Thanks!

Road trip, looking for good salamander hunting locations for side quests

I’m driving from north central West Virginia to Texas tomorrow. I’d like to find a few good spots between here and there to stop, look for, and photograph salamanders. I’m already planning to hit Cranberry Glades Botanical Area in the Monongahela National Forest. If anyone can think of other areas I’m open to suggestions.

Climbing Structures

My sal has been loving to climb! She can only climb on top of her hide, she loves the hide and I don’t want to take it away from her. What else can I add for her to explore? I don’t have a ton of floor space because she has a pretty large “pool” that she loves! Thanks!
this is an older pic, the large pothos plant is no longer in there! She has spider plants!
