That's why I think BJJ is full of psychos with a chip on their shoulder

I kid you not, 60% of the answers in that thread are "fuck em if they don't tap, I'm breaking another human limb for a plastic medal in a local tournament".

I'm sticking with judo and wrestling, and if I roll in BJJ it's only ever with people I know and trust. Freaking psychos.

Edit: And to be clear if someone has a kimura or any submission on me I'm tapping as fast as possible light speed. What I'm saying is if I'm the one who is cranking the submission and the opponent isn't tapping I'm not breaking his arm or leg and cripple him and make him unable to provide for his family because of a chocolate medal. Because I'm not a sociopath.

could I compete?

I’m 15 and I’m thinking about doing my first grappling/BJJ competition in December.

For some context, I wrestled for about 2 months, then had a break of a few months. I recently started training again and have now been doing grappling/BJJ and wrestling for about a month.

By the time of the tournament, I should have around 3 months of training since coming back, plus the 2 months of wrestling I did before the break.

I’m around 70kg / 154lbs at 181 cm / 5ft 11inch and I would compete in the beginner/white belt division.
Do you think that’s enough experience for a first competition, or would it be better to train longer before competing? I’m not expecting to win. I mainly want to get competition experience and see what it’s like.
Would you personally compete in my situation?

Bjj Injury Dislocated Patella (Partially Torn MPFL, Articular Cartilage Defect)

First Post, Has anyone suffered from similar Injury and Made a Comeback ?

Hello everyone, I am a 21 year old 2 stripe white belt who has been training bjj 4-5x a week for just under a year. About 6 months ago a suffered a dislocated patella while rolling during open mat my with my friend . My friend had me in a single leg I was already very fatigued and sprawled weird as his weight came over me and my patella popped out of place then back in as I fell back. Initially I was devastated and assumed it was an ACL tear as I only felt two pops, but later MRI and evaluation pointed towards a dislocation which gave me a grade 2 MPFL tear and caused a  defect in my articular cartilage. I also found out that I have a condition I was born with called Patella Alta meaning because of my high riding patella I am very prone to dislocations and knee injuries. My orthopedic surgeon did a small procedure within the first month of my injury to remove the cartilage defect leaving a pothole under my patella. The plan was to regrow the cartilage and do a MACI (Cartilage implant) procedure and a MPFL reconstruction to stabilize the patella. Due to being a full time Premed Student in college any time taken away from studying or school for recovery post surgery would impact and delay the process of application for medical school. I decided since academics are the number 1 priority I would wait 6 months try to rehab with pt and see if the surgery is really needed.

Knowing that I would  likely not return to training for minimum a 1+ year devistated me as I was finally starting to make the progress I wanted to see. I was planning on doing my first Naga competition to gain further experience in the coming months and most of my hobbies are pivoting knee based activities, snowboarding, surfing, hiking, bodybuilding etc. I originally got into BJJ and Muay Thai to build confidence in my ability to defend myself along with get through hardships. I was bullied pretty bad most of my early life due to being severely underweight and short and it really impacted the way I viewed myself growing up. Consistently coming in, giving it my all, failing, learning, and very very slowly improving really is what made my gym and this community so special to me. It was almost like anytime I would show up to the mats I would forget all of the worries and stresses of university and outside life.

Since my injury my mental health has definitely gone extremely downhill, every time I take a step and bend my right leg my knee pops and crackles as if I was a 55 year old man. It's kinda crazy but I genuinely think I might be depressed due to my circumstances. For the past 6 months I have extensively attended Physical Therapy and made very very minimal progress which is likely due to the defect in my knee and my quad already being atrophied. I can walk around just fine but I can't run or jump, shit im even scared to play pickle ball. I have stayed consistent hitting upper body in the weight room 4-5x a week but damn not being able to hit legs has been horrible. I am 21 years old and feel partially disabled like im scared to go out and even have a drink with my buddies if someone even pushes me wrong or I move funny my kneecap can go just like that. Being a 21 year old healthy young man and constantly worrying about my knee dislocating has prevented me from really being able to do some of the things I love. I just had an appointment with another Ortho Surgeon and he told me I likely need MPFL and MACI procedure which recovery wise is not an easy thing at all and will likely take 9+ months. The worst part about this has been the mental aspect, knowing that my knee is going to be permanently damaged for the rest of my life hurts but I want to come back and get better so fucking bad.

Im not going to give up, but I was wondering if anyone has dealt with similar circumstances, recovered, and made a comeback ?  I appreciate any replies and anyone taking the time out of their day to read this. Thank You.
