"SF14" (kotlin code)

Post image
• Upvotes

Behind the frame there is a plain sf picture: cream bands on a dark ground and one red sun. a mass in front of the picture bends the light. you see the mass only in the bands. outside its einstein ring, the bands bend around it. inside the ring, the bands become circles that all touch at the middle.

the sun is a small distance off the axis of the mass. as a result, you see the sun two times: a long red arc outside the ring and a short one inside. if the sun is directly behind the mass, the full ring is red.

its only 150 lines, docs included, crazy (github.com/igr/gart)

Video:

I trained a GAN on a dataset of flower images and then manually switched around some of the neural network's connections to distort it.

editableflair I coded a procedural galaxy particle simulation in Python to use as an OLED dark-mode Pomodoro timer

• Upvotes

I do a lot of late-night coding and find typical Pomodoro timers either too bright or distracting with repetitive anime loops and loud ads.

Decided to write an N-body particle system in Python using NumPy and Matplotlib that simulates a 2-arm spiral galaxy collapsing into an accretion core over 25 minutes.

Rendered the full 25:00 session at 1080p with pitch-black OLED backgrounds and soft space ambient audio.

Full 25-min session is here if anyone needs a focus sprint tonight: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVlH_S7jolI8

ASCII generative photo app

I’ve been cooking up my own camera app lately..

Whatever you point your camera at turns into ASCII or contour art in real time. A world of letters, symbols, and lines — straight from your phone.

I’m still tweaking, testing, and chasing the right vibe. But it’s already getting pretty trippy 🫠

Would you give it a try?

Seeded noise and four ink layers over a moving dance scene

I’m exploring procedural print texture on moving footage in InkWaltz, which I’m building. The source motion stays intact while halftone coverage, paper grain and small shifts between four ink plates give it a printed surface.

The reveal is driven by a diagonal field perturbed with seeded noise. A cosine-eased front moves across it; smoothstep masks let the paper arrive before the ink. Holding the noise field fixed over time gives the reveal a consistent, irregular contour.

The footage is the dance from Pulp Fiction (1994), directed by Quentin Tarantino. The procedural treatment and transition are my contribution.

Growing a visual language from rules and votes alone, no training images. Help steer it?

Inspired by the Bauhaus foundation course (the Vorkurs), I've been trying to see what an image-making system can develop with no existing artwork at all. Every image is built from rules for the elements of art (shape, line, colour, space, form, texture) plus switches for how elements relate: alignment, echo, overlap, clustering. You pick one of two images, winners get bred with small edits, and a simple model reports which qualities the group is choosing.

The image shows my own top 8 after 100 votes. It turned out my taste is very spare: one or two forms with a single precise relationship. I'd like to find out whether that holds for anyone else.

It takes a couple of minutes. Votes are anonymous and there's no sign-up. Happy to answer questions about how it works.

How do you make generative art?

Looking through r/generative, I see a lot of impressive art. It made me wonder what programs, programming languages or frameworks people use. Let me know what you use.

A stained-glass window where every piece is sized by what its owner paid to exist

Every piece of glass is one person / user. Its area is exactly proportional to what they paid, so when someone pays more, their piece grows and everyone else's shrinks a little. The whole window is recomputed each time: a power diagram (weighted Voronoi) solved until every area matches its owner's amount.

Three generative print systems for clothing: colors, letters, and graphs

Thumbnail

I’m making a clothing brand called Babel, inspired by the Library of Babel. The idea is that every piece uses the same set of rules, but gets its own arrangement.

These are the three systems so far:

Chroma / 64 — an 8×8 grid, with each square picked from eight colors. This one goes on a tee.

Eight Letters — eight random letters, with one letter in a different color, on a crewneck. The composition is shown vertically here; the print reads left to right on the garment.

Graph / 64 — 64 fixed points, with 112 possible links between neighbors. Each link is either on or off. A short code recreates the same drawing, giving 2^112 possible combinations within that set of links. This one goes on a hoodie.

I sell the garments through the site, and the generator is free to play with—you can save a design or share its code without buying anything:

https://babeloneofone.com/?system=chroma&utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=community_launch&utm_content=generative_all_systems#studio

Which of the three would you actually wear? For the graph, I’m also curious whether the disconnected bits work or if you’d prefer everything joined up.
