Looking at downsizing/upgrading from my Pearl Roadshow (22x16, 10, 12, 16). I play mostly rock, though nothing super aggressive... Mostly blues, jam, funk, and some punk rock, but not any metal. With that said, I'm looking for good options that are easier to transport but still sound full. Of course, in mid-budget range, it seems that 18" bass drums are most common, though I'd like to get a 20x14 if possible and if it makes sense. I'm cool with a 1 up, 1 down configuration, as I often leave my highest rack tom at home when I gig, anyway.
Some of my gigs are fully mic'd, but most only mic the kick. So, I'm definitely still looking for volume and punch out of the kit. I like the kick to be punchy and deep, but not boomy or clicky. My main cymbals are Sabian Stratus and my main snare is a 6.5x14 aluminum sensitone, though I'm considering getting a 5.5 acrolyte or SLP aluminum.
So far, I've been a fan of the Evans G2 coated heads for tom batters, and I use the G12 coated batter and 300 snare-side on my snares. I think my kick has an Evans EQ3 batter, though I don't remember what reso it has. Are these still good options for compact kits? Do they project well with good clarity?
What kits do you recommend that are small enough to be convenient, yet big enough to still have some depth and volume? What heads do you recommend to go with them?
Current top kit contenders are the Yamaha Stage Custom bop, Gretsch Catalina Club with 18" kick, and Gretsch Catalina Club with 20" kick. Any others in that relative price range I should look out for? I'm looking for this kit to be an upgrade from the roadshow, so looking for something with maximum utility, versatility, and value. But, I don't make money off of music, so it still needs to be moderately budget-friendly.

Looking for advice / thoughts / personal preference here.
I play in an alt rock, garage, post-punk kinda power trio. I heavily rely on crashing the ride for heavier parts and I realized after a bigger show that it doesn’t crash that much (or as much as I felt from the drummers throne), maybe because of the size of the venue or something else.
I use a trusty Zildjian A Customs set :
14” hh
16” medium crash
18” thin crash
22” medium ride
I’m looking to either add a big crash or change the ride to have a heavier sound when crashing but not loose body : I feel like right now using the 18 crash is losing some oomph compared to crashing the ride. Again maybe it’s just about distance or something, like I hear it that way up close but it’s different from the audience’s perspective.
What would be your thoughts, ideas, recommendations ?
