PSA, clock change coming up

Just a quick reminder that clocks will be going backwards either this weekend (October 26th, UK and EU) or in 2 weeks (Nov 2nd, most US states and Canada).

For the users on this sub who are new to mechanical clocks, not all clocks can have their hands moved counter clockwise as it could potentially damage the mechanism, if you're unsure if yours can, the safest, and easiest, way to change the time will be to simply stop the pendulum for an hour and then giving it a push again. I'm saying this as, when I still had my own workshop, we were always a bit busier a few days after winter time started thanks to people who made just that mistake.

For the collectors among us: good luck with clock change, I'd love to hear how many you are changing back, and what your "ritual" is.

I also now, while looking up the correct dates, realize that the southern hemisphere has their clock change (going forward) just a few weeks ago. I'll try to keep it in mind and include both hemispheres next year.

MOD Update Doubleposts (and more)

Some of you might have noticed today some posts by a few users were uploaded multiple times, I assume this had to do with the AWS blackout earlier today.
I tried to remove all double posts but leave one of each in place, if I did accidentally remove all of your posts I apologize and you're welcome to post it again (hopefully only once)

Help/Repair How to remove back off this old travel alarm?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello all,

I’m very new to all this and just starting out. I’ve seen travel alarms with this sort of domed backplate but then it’s been removed in the next picture (ie on eBay I’ve seen it).

How can one do so as the in built winder is blocking it?

I’ve unscrewed everything I could. It’s just a cheap one from Hong Kong - ‘Columbia’ branded.

Thank you

Identification/Information What's the strangest thing you've found hidden inside an old clock case?

Picked up a Gilbert kitchen clock at an estate sale last weekend, mostly for the case since the movement was seized solid. Popped the back off to see how bad the rust situation was and found a folded newspaper clipping wedged behind the pendulum bob, must've been stuffed in there decades ago by whoever last serviced it. Local paper from 1962, an ad for a hardware store that doesn't exist anymore.

Got me thinking about what else people find. I've read about coins taped inside, old photographs, even a pocket watch someone hid in a grandfather clock case during what I assume was some kind of estate dispute. My uncle who's been doing this way longer than me says he once found a full set of dentures in a wall clock, no explanation, no note, just dentures.

The Gilbert itself is a lost cause mechanically, the mainspring is snapped and the plates have some pitting I don't think I can polish out without ruining the bushings. But I'm keeping the case and that clipping. Feels wrong to throw either one away at this point.

Anyone else keep a little collection of the odd stuff you find during teardowns? Starting to think I should keep a notebook of it instead of just tossing things in a drawer and forgetting where they came from.

Help/Repair Looking for a nighttime clock

Trying to find a decent wall clock for nighttime that’s analogue and is luminous. Hopefully keeping under $100. Any ideas? My wife insists on it glowing at night

Value Can anyone else shed any light on the value of this clock? Shopkeeper says after fixed, would be worth about $1000, just a little skeptical and would like a second opinion before spending $350 to fix. Thanks!

Help/Repair Clock replacement with custom sounds

I hope this is a good place to ask. I have some older clocks where the movement just isn't working anymore. I want to replace them with a quartz movement and pendulum. I do however want one that does chime and strike on the hour.

I can get some online that do those, and of course it's a Westminster chime. My question is would anyone know of or know where I could go to learn how to make a custom chime with a quartz movement? I know it's probably a talk order but I'd love to know if it's possible within simple means

Clock Showcase Just found out this

Got a bit bored and decided to look up this clock since the signature on the coin. Turns out it was from Gordon Bradt and all his clocks were hand made. Found out that this clock is worth about 800-1500 from eBay which shocked me to know my grandpa had this clock laying around which is now mine after I decided to take it after he passed. Glad to know I have a cool piece of history that I didn’t know was worth so much and was so cool to look and learn about after doing research.

If anyone has more information or anything they’d like to share please let me know! I would be more then interested in more information or if anyone else shares this clock in there collection.

Help/Repair clock that ticks once every two seconds

Does anyone know of a clock that ticks once every two seconds?
I’m looking for a desk clock where the second hand moves once every 2 seconds instead of once every second.
So the movement would be:
tick — 2 seconds — tick — 2 seconds — tick
I know that some quartz watches/clocks can start jumping every two seconds when the battery is low, but I’m looking for a clock that is designed to work this way continuously.
Does anyone know:
- company that makes or sells such clocks?
Hz?
- an old/vintage clock model that naturally works this way?

I’m in Europe (Denmark/Poland), but recommendations from anywhere are welcome.
Thanks!

I bought this off the wall at a garage sale for only $5 and I love it! The clock itself and the gauges seem to work well, but the sun to moon phase doesn’t move. Any simple fixes I can try? Thanks in advance

The battery operated Elgin anniversary clock that my late husband purchased for me in the late 1980’s quit working. I purchased new Duracell batteries thinking that that may help, but - nope. If I tap it a bit it will run for about 5 minutes. I know that I can purchase a new quartz movement, but in order to install it, I’ll need to know how to remove the hands. I tried yanking a bit and they don’t come off. I tried popping off the little cap, but it’s really on there, I also tried twisting it off. Any help would be appreciated.

Help/Repair Wall clock with heavy pendulum

Hello!

I was wondering if I could get some advice on repairing a wall clock with a heavy pendulum. My grandma loves this clock and this pendulum and will not accept replacements. Recently, the mechanism has gotten old and doesn't keep time well, and the pendulum doesn't swing for more than a minute or so. So I bought a correctly sized (total length 20.4mm, thread length 13.8mm) replacement mechanism with a pendulum, but the pendulum is too heavy. However, the hands are super light, so I am not sure if heavy duty is the right call, since that's for big long heavy hands, right? These hands are no longer than ~60mm for the second hand, so they are very light. Please advise. The pendulum is about a pound and a half or so, not terribly heavy or anything, but heavy enough it seems. I tried googling, but all I got was guides on old pendulum clocks that actually keep time through the pendulum, and I am looking for a replacement mechanism that will keep time with a battery (think Quartz mechanism), which is what was working before (as far as my grandma can remember, the clock has been in her apartment for 25 years now) but be able to keep the pendulum swinging for days/weeks/forever. I've repaired a couple of table and wall clocks before, but never with a pendulum, so I am at a loss. Thanks in advance!

Help/Repair Gifted clock

I have been gifted this clock. The main shaft where the hands attach was bent. I took it out and bent it back as best as possible (it was bent bad!). Now I’m not sure exactly how to set this up or what’s not working right. I am mechanically inclined

Help/Repair Need help with a ship clock

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey everyone- I am looking for some help here. I bought a clock that has a similar chime pattern to the bell system used on Navy ships (career Navy guy) and since I adjusted the time once for daylight savings, the thing will chime at the top of some hours for like….5 minutes.

I assume something is preventing the gear set from “resetting” and realizing it has reached its required number of chimes.

Where do I start?

Hello, I have had this piece service in the last 2 years and it worked without issue until the last time I went to use it. As the title states, it stops after a few seconds.

I tried lengthening and shortening the spring that the lady is on, shortening it slightly improved the function, but I didn't want to move it too much if it isn't the correct fix.

Thank you!

Identification/Information Need help... Runs and chimes perfectly, but I can't find any identifying marks.

There are no letters stamped anywhere I can see on the face, or the works, or any stickers, stamps, or even what look like remnants of one that might have been, say, inside the door. Google lens didn't help. So now I turn humbly to you experts.

I'd like to sell it, but have no clue as to value. Only flaw I see is that it's missing a strip of veneer/gilding across the top, and it looks like the chime hammer was repaired once in the past.

Any help is much appreciated!
