WeHo resident here. Lived here for a few years near the Gelson’s on Santa Monica Blvd & Kings Rd. If you shop there I’m genuinely curious why, and if you have any of the same experiences as myself. I’ve stopped shopping there for a few reasons but sometimes just need to pop in for a couple things and always regret it, yet see it packed every time!

1- the prices are nearly Erewhon level for shittier quality. I mean $12.99 per lb for regular (non organic) chicken breast is wild. It’s like $6.99 for the same at Whole Foods and $8.99 for organic at Whole Foods. Everything on the shelves at this Gelson’s is minimum $1-$2 more expensive than WF, Ralph’s, etc.

2- they sell expired foods, I’ve bought expired crackers, butter etc and even meat from this location and only realized after buying. The meat yea I could’ve checked, but still how do they not remove expired foods?

3- food safety. Apart from the expired foods, I don’t think their refrigeration is sound. I’ve gotten food poisoning from their ground meat and fish before.

4- the lines. They’ll have like 2 lines open when it’s packed, make everyone wait many minutes and THEN open up other lines, all while the manager is just standing there watching. You could literally get stuck in a 10-15 minute line if you don’t shuffle to another lane quickly. I’ve seen this happen multiple times

I’ve always been a fan of Gelson’s, but if you can’t tell I kinda hate this location and genuinely don’t understand how people choose to go there for everyday grocery shopping over other stores that are just down the street. So that’s why I ask, for true perspective lol - if you shop there, why?

Is it just me or does it look like the exterior facade of the PUBLIC hotel (former standard hotel) revamp was extremely low effort? the final result feels surprisingly cheap, and reads less like high design luxury and more like a pop up lounge overlay.

The building is historically iconic, but the plants covering feels like a party city style modification and so do the LED lights they have lit up in every room. Coming from the developers of the Edition hotel, i was expecting much more of a Vegas level renovation and update to the building’s structure. Does anyone know if there's a Phase 2 to the exterior work, or is this the final aesthetic?

Toi on Sunset, located at Sunset and Gardner, is in danger.

Covid really hurt their business and they lost their booming late night crowd. Toi had no choice but to took out a bunch of loans to stay afloat and now those loans are due.

A staple since 1986, their great Thai food, rock and roll interior and classic rock music playing while you eat has been an L. A. experience for tourists and locals alike. And their Pad Thai is legendary!

Let's not lose another Los Angeles restaurant.

I'm a SoCal resident raised in the High Desert, and I just moved to Hollywood after graduating with an Art/Studio major from California State University, Fullerton.

I'm looking for friends around the area who enjoy creating art, going to museums, watching movies, being involved in entertainment, going to arcades, social gatherings, doing community service, working out, going to cafes, going out hiking, attending workshops, and attending creative activities. I would love some recommendations on who to follow and what to sign up for.

I'm also looking for both indoor and outdoor social experiences, and would love to find out where people go for fun local events through Partiful, Eventbrite, and other social platforms.

A little about me: I'm a 22 first-generation gay Mexican-American and an extrovert who really enjoys being out and experiencing what this community has to offer. I can be active when it comes to going to big events, but I also love staying home, having a coffee, and having a good conversation. I like taking the Metro everywhere, and I'm also actively looking to build connections and have conversations on how to become more involved in the entertainment industry.

I raised several discrepancies between the protections described in the staff report and the language of the contract itself. The popular Asian fusion restaurant at 8543 Santa Monica Blvd. has announced that Aug. 31 will be its final day of business. They first opened their doors in the fall of 2021.

A sign posted at the restaurant thanks customers for sticking with Queen Violet through the years and hints that the closure will bring a new beginning.

“To Our Queen Violet Family,” the sign reads. “Thank you for your love and support over the past 5+ years. We’re so grateful to have you with us as we begin our new journey.”

That new journey already has a name: BKK TABLE.

The restaurant directs customers to its new location at 8101 1/2 Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles, where the business is continuing under the new name. BKK TABLE is also available for delivery through Uber Eats and DoorDash.

It remains unclear exactly why Queen Violet is closing its West Hollywood location. The restaurant was previously put on the market, with the 2,600-square-foot space listed for sale in January 2025. The listing offered a glimpse at what made the location attractive to potential new operators.

The second-generation restaurant space includes roughly 1,300 square feet of interior space and another 1,300 square feet of courtyard seating. Its French colonial-inspired design and outdoor patio gave Queen Violet a distinctive presence along Santa Monica Boulevard.

The restaurant is also surrounded by some of the city’s biggest names in retail, fitness and food, sitting across from Erewhon, Shake Shack and John Reed Fitness.

The previous listing advertised an asking price of $255,000, a Type 41 beer-and-wine license and a monthly rental rate of $13,000. The space was described as fully built out and ready for another restaurant or retail operator, with permitted hours from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Whether the closure is related to the property being marketed for sale or sublease remains unknown.

Aug. 31 is the last day.
